Watch: Jahri Evans learns he’s going into the Saints Ring of Honor

These days Jahri Evans works for the Saints as an assistant coach. News that he’s going into the team’s Ring of Honor was met with applause and a great speech:

News recently broke that legendary New Orleans Saints offensive lineman Jahri Evans would be the next addition to the team’s Ring of Honor, one of the most prestigious honors a player can receive with the black and gold. Evans has worked with the coaching staff since 2022, when he started as a training camp intern, and was hired full-time as an assistant coach since 2023.

So it’s convenient that he was on hand when head coach Dennis Allen announced his induction during a team meeting. It allowed Evans to speak in front of players and coaches about what this means to him. The announcement came to thunderous applause, and Evans stood to speak about what an honor this is to him.

“I don’t know what to say, you know what I mean, this is,” Evans said. “I was not expecting this. I’m holding back tears.”

He continued: “This is awesome man, it was always a dream of mine to play this game, and when I got the opportunity to play it, it was as hard as I could, as tough as I could, and the biggest thing was winning games. Biggest thing is winning games as a team, not letting my teammates down, you know? And, obviously having the chance to win a Super Bowl.”

He addressed the team for about two minutes, and with how uncommon these inductions are (Allen noted that there are just seven people in the Saints Ring of Honor), it is great to see how special it really is to Evans and those around him. It’s almost as exclusive as the Pro Football Hall of Fame; Evans reached the finalist stage last time after reaching the semifinalist stage in his first year of eligibility. He just needs to get over that last hurdle.

Evans will be formally inducted to the Saints Ring of Honor at halftime of their Nov. 17 game with the Cleveland Browns.

Kendre Miller injured during Saints’ first training practice

Kendre Miller suffered a hamstring injury at Wednesday’s first training camp practice. The New Orleans Saints running back continues to face setbacks:

The New Orleans Saints always deal with injuries pretty early into the process, and this offseason seems to be no different with injuries to Chase Young and Juwan Johnson during the offseason process or earlier. This trend seems to have continued as well, with second-year running back Kendre Miller suffering a hamstring injury during Wednesday’s training camp practice. According to Katherine Terrell of ESPN, he went into the training tent and did not return once that occurred.

Miller dealt with leg issues all of last season as a rookie. He missed time with a patella sprain, grade one hamstring sprain, and pedal ankle sprain at different points throughout the season. This led to him only playing in eight games during his rookie year, with only 41 rush attempts and 11 times targeted. He was still recovering from a knee injury when the Saints drafted him out of TCU.

Dennis Allen’s take on Miller’s hamstring injury was pointed after practice: “Look, that’s a player that’s going to have to figure out how to stay healthy. Because it’s hard to make the team when you’re in the training room all the time.”

It has been a tough road for Miller to this point in his career, no doubt, and hopefully things turn around and this is not a lingering injury for the short term future. As of right now, the Saints depth chart at running back seems relatively short with this news:

  • Alvin Kamara
  • Kendre Miller (hamstring injury)
  • Jamaal Williams
  • Jordan Mims
  • James Robinson
  • Jacob Kibodi

There are a few options available in free agency as training camp bodies as well if that ends up being a need. Lynn Bowden Jr. and Eno Benjamin are both available and were on the roster last summer, as is Kareem Hunt who was a reported target for the Saints last year. We will see how this plays out, hopefully it is just a minor injury and Miller gets back out there quickly without issue. He can’t afford to miss much time.

Which team has an edge in the all-time Saints-Giants series history?

The Saints and Giants have met 31 times in NFL history, and in recent memory, many of their games have been highly competitive battles:

The New Orleans Saints and New York Giants have met a litany of times in recent memory. Since the Saints came into the league in 1967, they have played the Giants on 31 separate occasions, 11 of those games coming since 2000. In these 31 matchups, the Giants have taken home 17 victories to the Saints’ 14, and there have been no ties between these two teams. In matches since 2000, the record is 6-5 in favor of New Orleans.

And these two teams have produced some spectacular battles over the years, with arguably the most notable being the matchup in 2015 between Drew Brees and Eli Manning. The two quarterbacks would combine for 855 passing yards and 13 passing touchdowns that day, with Drew Brees tying the record for the most in a game ever. That matchup would end up a victory for the Saints, as they won 52-49 in regulation.

The most recent game between these two teams was also interesting without a doubt. The game would end in a 27-21 victory for the Giants in overtime on a nine-play, 75-yard touchdown drive, sealed by a 6-yard touchdown run by Saquon Barkley.

Compared to 2021 however, these teams differ greatly in some ways and are similar in others. The Giants’ current depth chart compared to their 2021 roster has just five players still starting:

  • RB Saquon Barkley
  • DT Dexter Lawrence
  • OLB Azeez Ojulari
  • CB Adoree’ Jackson
  • S Xavier McKinney

Obviously due to injury some are left off for this week, such as Daniel Jones, but that list is not exceptionally long. On the other hand the Saints have a couple more starters who are still starting from 2021. In total, they have eight who remain in the starting position, with Derek Carr taking over at quarterback:

  • RB Alvin Kamara
  • C Erik McCoy
  • RG Cesar Ruiz
  • RT Ryan Ramczyk
  • DE Cameron Jordan
  • LB Demario Davis
  • CB Paulson Adebo
  • CB Marshon Lattimore

With that said, Michael Thomas is also still around however he did not start the 2021 season and is currently injured as well. You could also include Taysom Hill somewhat as he was not a starter necessarily in 2021 but he had significant contributions that game. Interestingly enough, neither team has their 2021 kicker or punter as well, as both teams have moved on since then.  Regardless, this matchup looks to be one that has new faces all across the board for both teams.
