The New Jersey Devils (34-33-4) take on the New York Islanders (30-25-15) Sunday evening as both teams attempt to hang onto their slim playoff hopes. Puck drop at UBS Arena is scheduled for 5 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Below, we analyze FanDuel Sportsbook’s lines around the Devils vs. Islanders odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

New Jersey was defeated 5-2 in Newark by the Ottawa Senators Saturday night, dropping its playoff chances to 4.6% heading into Sunday’s slate. The Devils have defeated the Islanders twice this season already, with both games resulting in a 5-4 finish.

The Islanders improved their playoff chances to 13.1% after taking down the Winnipeg Jets at home Saturday night 6-3, which snapped a 6-game losing streak. C Matt Barzal, the team leader in points (73), recorded a goal and 2 assists in the win.

Devils at Islanders projected goalies

Kaapo Kahkonen (6-22-3, 3.81 GAA, .894 SV%) vs. Ilya Sorokin (22-18-11, 3.07 GAA, .907 SV%, 2 SO)

Kahkonen is winless in 2 starts with the Devils since being acquired from the Sharks prior to the trade deadline, although C Curtis Lazar believes New Jersey let its goalie “hang out to dry” in the 4-1 loss to Arizona March 16.  In his career vs. the Islanders, the 27-year-old is 3-1 in 4 starts, and back in December he earned a 5-4 win in OT as a member of San Jose.

Sorokin has lost 5 straight starts, with his last victory coming March 7 vs. Kahkonen’s former team, the Sharks. Prior to his last outing, a 6-3 defeat vs. Detroit this past Thursday, coach Patrick Roy expressed his trust in the 28-year-old despite the rough skid. Sorokin enters Sunday with the most minutes logged among goalies in the Eastern Conference (3025), along with the most goals allowed (155) and most saves made (1505) in the entire league.

Devils at Islanders picks and predictions

Prediction

Islanders 4, Devils 3

Moneyline

BET ISLANDERS ML (-130).

That was a gut-wrenching loss for a Devils team against the lowly Senators Saturday night as they fell further out of postseason contention. Meanwhile, New York has some momentum after taking down a Jets team that is headed to the playoffs. Personally, I doubt the Devils will be able to regroup so quickly with their backup goaltender against an Islanders team that should stay fired up thanks to a 2-goal game from veteran RW Cal Clutterbuck.

Puck line/Against the spread

PASS.

Too much juice to take Devils on the puck line, plus New Jersey has allowed the most empty-net goals so far this season (23). If this game does not end up needing overtime to decide a winner, there is a good chance the desperate Devils could pull Kahkonen early, which would allow the Isles to get some chances at the empty net.

Over/Under

BET OVER 6.5 (-108).

Entering Sunday, no team has more rebound shots than New Jersey (229), while the Islanders have the 4th-most (206). Conversely, the Devils allow the 5th-most rebound goals (23), so there should be plenty of opportunities for a guy like C Brock Nelson to break his 7-game goalless streak.

New Jersey Devils at New York Islanders odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Friday’s New Jersey Devils at New York Islanders odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The New Jersey Devils (1-1-1) take on the New York Islanders (2-0-0) Friday at UBS Arena. Puck drop is 7:30 p.m. ET (NHL Network). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Devils vs. Islanders odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

After their season-opening win, the Devils have dropped 2 straight — 1 via a shootout. They dropped their last game 4-3 to the Florida Panthers Monday. C Jack Hughes is off to a fast start with 2 goals and 4 assists. LW Jesper Bratt has 3 goals and 2 assists of his own.

The Islanders shut out the Arizona Coyotes 1-0 on Tuesday night. They beat the Buffalo Sabres 3-2 in their season opener as well. C Mathew Barzal and C Brock Nelson each have 1 goal on the young season.

Devils at Islanders projected goalies

Vitek Vanecek (1-1-0, 3.62 GAA, .892 SV%) vs. Ilya Sorokin (2-0-0, 1.00 GAA, .952 SV%, 1 SO)

Vanecek hasn’t gotten off to a real good start, allowing 7 goals on 65 shots in his 1st 2 games. He struggled in 2 games against the Isles last season, allowing 7 goals on 51 shots for a 5.17 GAA.

Sorokin is one of the best goalies in the league, but you just don’t hear enough about him. He has stopped 40 of 42 shots in 2 games. He was 1-1-0 with a 2.05 GAA and .945 SV% in 2 starts against New Jersey last season.

Devils at Islanders picks and predictions

Prediction

Islanders 3, Devils 2

Moneyline

The Islanders have won 5 of the last 6 meetings against the Devils. New Jersey got them once early last season, and the Isles won 6-4 and 5-1 in the other 2 meetings. I like New York here unless there is a goalie swap. Sorokin is on top of his game, and if they can stay healthy and add some scoring before the trade deadline, they’re going to be a sleeper team.

Take the ISLANDERS +100.

Puck line/Against the spread

These teams are a combined 0-5 on the puck line this season. That ends here, but we’re not paying -250 for it.

Instead, we’re going to spotlight Hughes. He has 4, 6 and 6 shots on goal in the first 3 games. Let’s take JACK HUGHES OVER 3.5 SHOTS (-155).

Over/Under

This one is going Under. The Devils have gone Over in every game, but Sorokin will keep the young Devils snipers frustrated. The Isles have gone Under in both games because they’ve scored a combined 4 goals. The Over was 1-1-1 in the 3 matchups last season.

Take the UNDER 6 (-110).

New Jersey Devils at New York Islanders odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Monday’s New Jersey Devils at New York Islanders odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The New Jersey Devils (46-19-8) visit the New York Islanders (37-28-9) Monday. Puck drop from UBS Arena is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Devils vs. Islanders odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

The Devils picked up a 5-3 victory over the visiting Ottawa Senators on Saturday, as they look to turn around a 1-4-1 stretch. The Over has cashed in 3 of New Jersey’s last 4 games.

The Islanders were blanked 2-0 against the visiting Buffalo Sabres on Saturday, their first game in the past 4 outings without a point (3-0-1). The Over is 6-2 across New York’s last 8 games despite the Under results against Buffalo.

The road team has won each of the first 2 meetings in this series this season — and 3 straight dating back to last season. The Isles won 6-4 on Dec. 9 in Newark as the Over (6) cashed, while the Devils registered a 4-1 win at UBS Arena on Oct. 20 as the Under (6) connected.

Devils at Islanders projected goalies

Vitek Vanecek (29-9-4, 2.49 GAA, .909 SV%, 3 SO) vs. Ilya Sorokin (26-19-7, 2.41 GAA, .922 SV%, 5 SO)

Vanecek was expected to rest Friday in Buffalo but came on in the 1st period to relieve G Akira Schmid after he allowed 3 goals on 7 shots. He turned aside 17 of the 19 shots he faced in relief.

Sorokin coughed up 5 goals on just 27 shots in a 5-4 OT loss at the Columbus Blue Jackets Friday. He had allowed 3 or fewer goals in 10 of his previous 11 outings before the implosion.

Devils at Islanders picks and predictions

Prediction

Devils 4, Islanders 2

Moneyline

The DEVILS (-130) are a solid value on the road.

New Jersey has won 8 straight games inside the Metropolitan Division and is 26-9 in its last 35 road outings. The road team has also won 3 straight meetings in the series.

The Islanders are 10-22 in the past 32 games against teams with a winning percentage of .600 or higher.

Puck line/Against the spread

The DEVILS -1.5 (+175) are worth a roll of the dice laying the goal and a half for a chance to nearly double up.

New Jersey won by at least 2 goals in each of its last 4 wins outings dating back to March 11. If you like New Jersey to win, you should like it to cover the puck line, too.

Over/Under

The UNDER 6.5 (-140) is worth playing lightly, but go with a half-unit play at best.

The Under is 5-1 in the past 6 games for the Devils when working on 1 day of rest and is also 4-0 in their last 4 games after a victory.

The Under is also 15-6-2 in the past 23 games overall at UBS Arena for the Islanders and is 35-14-2 in the past 51 meetings between these foes on the Island.

New Jersey Devils at New York Islanders odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Thursday’s New Jersey Devils at New York Islanders odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The New Jersey Devils (1-2-0) and New York Islanders (2-1-0) tangle in a Thursday night affair at UBS Arena. The opening faceoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Devils vs. Islanders odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

New Jersey opened the season with back-to-back 5-2 losses but then righted the ship with a 4-2 home win over the Anaheim Ducks Tuesday. The Devils outshot the Ducks 41-20 in that game, and they have exhibited dominant puck-possession analytics through 3 games.

The Islanders are closing out a stretch of 4 straight home games to open the season. New York has won back-to-back games in high-scoring fashion: the Isles scored a combined 12 even-strength goals in downing Anaheim 7-1 and the San Jose Sharks 5-2.

In an 11-11 exchange in goals scored, the Islanders took last year’s season series 3-1.

Vitek Vanecek (0-1-0, 5.00 GAA, .773 SV%) vs. Ilya Sorokin (1-1-0, 1.53 GAA, .941 SV%)

Vanecek logged a 2.67 GAA, .909 SV% in 42 games (for the Washington Capitals) last season. He was roughed up, allowing 5 goals in 22 shots against the Detroit Red Wings Saturday.

Sorokin has been a fast starter in his short career. He owns a .933 SV% across 9 October games. He’s 5-2 with a .920 SV% over 7 career games against New Jersey.

Devils at Islanders picks and predictions

Prediction

Islanders 4, Devils 3

Moneyline

The Devils’ goaltending has been shaky. But look for a decent number of shots from both teams in this one.

Sorokin gives host New York enough of an edge to go past -150 on the outlay.

BET ISLANDERS (-165).

Puck line/Against the spread

PASS. These two Metro foes have gone toe-to-toe before. Look for the season series to get started with a close affair.

Over/Under

The Islanders are playing a more open style of hockey. They have scored at a nice clip so far (4.33 goals per game) without drawing many man-advantage opportunities.

BACK THE OVER 6.5 (-101).

New Jersey Devils at New York Islanders odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Saturday’s New Jersey Devils at New York Islanders odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The New Jersey Devils (10-10-5) visit the New York Islanders (6-11-5) Sunday at UBS Arena in Elmont, N.Y. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Devils vs. Islanders odds and lines, and make our expert NHL picks, predictions and bets.

The Devils have won just once in the past six outings, although they gave it a valiant effort in a 3-2 home loss to the Nashville Predators Friday night. The last time these teams squared off, the Devils won 4-0 in Newark Nov. 11.

Things haven’t gone according to plan for the Islanders this season. The Isles also lost to the Preds last time out, falling 4-3 Thursday, and they have won just once in the past 13 outings.

Devils at Islanders projected goalies

Mac Blackwood (5-3-3, 2.81 GAA, .913 SV%, 2 SO) vs. Semyon Varlamov (0-5-1, 3.29 GAA, .884 SV%)

Blackwood allowed just three goals on 27 shots in the home loss to the Predators Friday. He topped the Islanders Nov. 11, turning aside all 42 shots he faced for his first of two shutouts this season.

Varlamov hasn’t won in six starts and seven appearances this season. He allowed four goals on 29 shots against the Predators Thursday in his most recent showing.

Devils at Islanders odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Devils 3, Islanders 2

Money line

The DEVILS (+135) are the play as short ‘dogs on the road, but they looked pretty good in Friday’s game against the Predators. The Islanders (-170) have just looked lost, and you cannot risk money backing a team with seven consecutive losses at home.

Against the spread

The Devils +1.5 (-205) are a little too pricey if you’re looking for some insurance and just do not trust them straight up.

PASS.

Over/Under

UNDER 5.5 (-135) is the lean here. While the Devils have hit the Over in four in a row on the road, they might have some heavy legs after playing the night before. And the Islanders have cashed in five of the past six at home, and the Under is 10-4 in their past 14 as a home favorite, too.

New Jersey Devils at New York Islanders odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Thursday’s New Jersey Devils at New York Islanders NHL betting odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The New Jersey Devils (2-0-1) look to stay hot Thursday in the first game of a home-and-home against the New York Islanders (2-1-0). Puck drop at Nassau Coliseum is set for 7 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze the Devils-Islanders NHL betting odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Devils at Islanders: Betting odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 11:40 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Devils +130 (bet $100 to win $130) | Islanders -155 (bet $155 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Devils +1.5 (-225) | Islanders -1.5 (+180)
  • Over/Under: 5.5 (O: +115 | U: -140)

Devils at Islanders: Projected starting goalies

Mackenzie Blackwood (2-0-1, .948 SV%, 1.90 GAA) vs. Semyon Varlamov (2-0-0, 1.00 SV%, 0.00 GAA)

Blackwood has been a huge reason for the Devils’ hot start. The 24-year-old stopped 47 of a ridiculous 50 shots on goal in a win over the New York Rangers Tuesday.

Varlamov was expected to hand over the No. 1 job to rookie Ilya Sorokin at some point this season, but the veteran has started with back-to-back shutouts with 51 total saves to stay on top of the depth chart. He allowed 2 goals on 31 shots in his only start against the Devils last season.

Devils at Islanders: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Devils 3, Islanders 1

Money line (ML)

The DEVILS (+130) are the play for a road upset. The Islanders are last in the league with a Corsi For percentage of just 42.9% at 5-on-5. The measure of total shot attempts, including blocked and missed shots, shows New York has been far too reliant on the brilliant goaltending of Varlamov. The Devils are just 22nd in the NHL, but it’s a big enough difference to trust and want to take the value.

The Isles are without a key offensive contributor in RW Josh Bailey (COVID-19). New Jersey is missing C Nico Hischier (leg) but C Jack Hughes is emerging as a very early MVP candidate.

The oddsmakers don’t seem to be trusting Blackwood’s incredible start, but bettors should in what projects as a night with a lesser workload for him.

Against the spread (ATS)

Like the Devils to win outright, I’ll add the insurance of a 1-goal loss by taking NEW JERSEY +1.5 (-225) on the puck line. New Jersey has at least a point in all three games and will keep it tight in a goalie duel.

Over/Under (O/U)

Following suit, let’s add the UNDER 5.5 (-140) in a battle of two teams struggling to generate consistent offensive pressure. Both goaltenders are in for some regression on their early-season performance, but it’s unlikely to start in this spot.
