5 big takeaways from Patriots’ 31-17 loss at Miami

Here are 5 big takeaways from Sunday’s Patriots-Dolphins game

A week after their surprising victory against the Buffalo Bills, the New England Patriots traveled south to Miami to take on the Dolphins on Sunday.

While the Patriots were able to get on the board early, they were ultimately unable to contend with Miami’s explosive offense, losing the game 31-17.

New England quarterback Mac Jones had a rough day at the offense, unable to hit the passes when he most needed to and failing to execute in clutch situations. He was held to far below 200 passing yards, a low point after the performance he put on last weekend.

Here are five big takeaways from the game.

Underdogs did well in Week 7 of the NFL. Eight underdogs covered the spread out of 13 games and 7 of those teams won their games outright. We now begin Week 8 looking for some winning picks.

Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook NFL odds and lines, and tab the best NFL Week 8 underdog bets to cash in on among SportbookWire’s NFL expert picks and predictions.

Last week, I went 2-1 with my underdog picks. The Jacksonville Jaguars beat the New Orleans Saints and the Minnesota Vikings not only covered the spread but beat the San Francisco 49ers outright. However, the Los Angeles Chargers did not keep the game close with the Kansas City Chiefs, losing by 14 points.

Through 7 weeks, my underdog picks have gone 13-8.

BUCCANEERS +9 (-110) at Bills – Thursday 8:15 p.m. (Amazon Prime)

The Buffalo Bills have failed to cover the spread in their last 3 games.

Tampa Bay has allowed fewer than 20 points in 4 of 6 games this season. The Bills have averaged 19.7 points per game over their last 3.

The Bucs are 2-0 on the road. They have scored last in 11 of the previous 17 games, which can lend itself to a late cover. I don’t think they will win the game outright, but 9 points is a lot to give with 2 strong defensive teams.

PATRIOTS +9.5 (-110) at Dolphins – 1 p.m. (CBS)

The New England Patriots and Miami Dolphins played once this season. The Dolphins won by 7, covering the 1-point spread as the favorite.

New England found itself last week after 2 blowout losses and beat the favorite Bills outright. New England scored 29 points last week. Miami allowed 31. And it is unknown whether Dolphins WR Tyreek Hill will play.

Four of the last 5 meetings have been decided by 9 or fewer points.

BENGALS (+145) at 49ers – 4:25 p.m. (CBS)

The Bengals have won 2 straight games against the NFC West and are coming off their bye to prepare for San Francisco, which has lost 2 in a row and has QB Brock Purdy is in the league concussion protocol.

Cincinnati’s offense has struggled outside of their Week 5 win over Arizona, having failed to reach 300 total yards in 4 of 6 games this season, but the 49ers have been held to 17 points in each of their last 2 games.

The Bengals have 8 takeaways in their last 4 games and 5 in their last 2.

5 big takeaways from Patriots’ 24-17 loss vs Dolphins

Another comeback, another drive that came up just short. Here are 5 big takeaways from the Patriots’ loss to Miami

Those are the ones that rip your heart out.

A week after their go-ahead drive ended on a failed fourth-down conversion against the Philadelphia Eagles, the New England Patriots decided to rinse and repeat. Down 24-17 with a minute to go against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday night, the Patriots again embarked on a drive to extend the game.

And once again, a fantastic fourth down play that was initially called a first down conversion on the field was overturned by video review, giving their opponent the ball and the ability to run the clock out to end the game.

Here are 5 big takeaways from the matchup.

3 big takeaways from Patriots’ 23-21 win vs Dolphins

Here are 3 big takeaways from the Patriots’ 23-21 win over the Dolphins.

A week after their controversial last-second loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, the New England Patriots took on the Miami Dolphins at home. Both teams came into the matchup with the ability to control their own playoff destinies over the last few weeks of the regular season, making the game an important one.

Controversial officiating marred the game early on, as the question of “forward progress” that questionably ended last week’s game in Cincinnati’s favor again came about after an early-game fumble by Miami running back Raheem Mostert was negated because the official blew the play dead before the ball came loose.

A bit later in the first quarter, a catch by Miami wide receiver Tyreek Hill was called out of bounds, but an eerily similar one by New England wideout Tyquan Thornton was called inbounds and was even upheld upon review.

Ultimately, the referees did not have a substantial effect on the game in the long run, as the Patriots, benefitting from the play of Miami’s backup and third-string quarterbacks, were able to do just enough to give themselves the 23-21 victory.

Here are three big takeaways from the game.
