SEC Tournament win over Alabama gives Florida a boost in NET rankings

The Gators are back in the NET rankings top 30 thanks to their second blowout of Alabama this season.

The Florida Gators earned a win in the Southeastern Conference Quarterfinals on Friday night, routing the Alabama Crimson Tide with triple digits in a 102-88 victory.

Following the win, the Orange and Blue rose seven spots overall in the NET rankings from the pregame rankings to No. 28. Todd Golden’s gang now sits between the No. 27 Texas Tech Red Raiders and No. 29 Texas Longhorns.

Here’s how the quadrant system breaks things up:

  • Quadrant 1: Home 1-30, Neutral 1-50, Away 1-75
  • Quadrant 2: Home 31-75, Neutral 51-100, Away 76-135
  • Quadrant 3: Home 76-160, Neutral 101-200, Away 135-240
  • Quadrant 4: Home 161-353, Neutral 201-353, Away 241-353

The Gators are 5-7 against Quadrant 1 opponents, 4-2 against Quadrant 2 opponents, 8-1 against Quadrant 3 opponents and 6-0 against Quadrant 4 opponents. They now hold a 23-10 record overall and a 13-7 mark against Southeastern Conference opponents.

Florida moves on to the semifinal round on Saturday, March 16, in Nashville where they will face the Texas A&M Aggies, who beat them in College Station by just one point the last time the two teams met. Tipoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET and the game can be watched on ESPN.

Florida takes tumble in NET rankings after Vanderbilt road loss

The Gators fell out of the top 30 teams in the NET rankings following Sunday evening’s loss.

It was not the finish to the regular season that the Gator Nation expected on Saturday when the Vanderbilt Commodores stood their ground at home and outlasted Florida, 79-78. A double-digit favorite coming in, Todd Golden’s team once again struggled on the road and showed a great deal of weakness in the second half.

Following the loss, the Orange and Blue fell seven spots from No. 28 on game day to No. 35 overall in the NET rankings; the previous update after the Alabama Crimson Tide win had it at No. 26. Todd Golden’s team now sits between the No. 34 Florida Atlantic Owls and the No. 36 Colorado State Rams.

Here’s how the quadrant system breaks things up:

  • Quadrant 1: Home 1-30, Neutral 1-50, Away 1-75
  • Quadrant 2: Home 31-75, Neutral 51-100, Away 76-135
  • Quadrant 3: Home 76-160, Neutral 101-200, Away 135-240
  • Quadrant 4: Home 161-353, Neutral 201-353, Away 241-353

The Gators are 4-7 against Quadrant 1 opponents, 3-2 against Quadrant 2 opponents, 8-1 against Quadrant 3 opponents and 6-0 against Quadrant 4 opponents. They hold a 21-10 record overall and an 11-7 final mark in Southeastern Conference play.

That lone Quadrant 3 loss might come back to bite the Gators when the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee makes their final decision on the seedings.

Florida is a No. 6 seed in the SEC Tournament, giving it a first-round bye and matching the Gators up with the winner of Game 2 on Thursday, March 14, inside Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee. Tipoff is slated for a late 9:30 p.m. ET start on the SEC Network.

Tar Heels make sizable jump in latest NET rankings after sweeping Duke

Beating Duke has its perks. For the UNC men’s basketball team, it boosted them a few spots in the latest installation of NET rankings.

The day is Sunday, March 10, and all is well in Tar Heel Nation.

North Carolina beat archrival Duke last night, 84-79, to sweep the regular-season series and clinch the ACC regular-season title. This was UNC’s first time sweeping the twice-annual matchup since 2020-2021 and its first outright regular-season title since the 2015-2016 season.

Cormac Ryan forever etched his name in the Tar Heels-Blue Devils rivalry, erupting for a career-high 31 points in the win. Kyle Filipowski became public enemy No. 1 at UNC by tripping Harrison Ingram and giving many flashbacks to the Grayson Allen years.

North Carolina players taunted the obnoxious Cameron Crazies afterward and then headed to Franklin Street to celebrate with the Tar Heel faithful. Another consequence emerged slightly later: UNC climbed three spots to seventh in the latest NET rankings.

If the NCAA Tournament was seeded solely based on NET numbers, North Carolina would be a 2 seed. The Tar Heels are playing every bit like a top seed right now, though, winning six straight games and rounding into tournament form.

With projected 1 seed Arizona losing Saturday night to Southern Cal, you could make a strong case for UNC moving up to a top seed – while the Wildcats move down to a two.

Texas A&M Basketball remains steady in newest NET Rankings

Texas A&M Is on the brink of earning an NCAA Tournament bid ahead of facing Ole Miss to end the regular season.

Texas A&M (17-13, 8-9 SEC) is finally back in contention for an NCAA Tournament bid amid a two-game winning streak after recently defeating Mississippi State 75-69 on Wednesday night.

Finally, after ending a miserable five-game losing streak last Saturday against the Georiga Bulldogs, the Aggies have returned to their defensive identity, forcing turnovers while capitalizing on transition scoring opportunities to avoid stagnant possessions at the top of the key.

Amid Wade Taylor IV’s offensive struggles, veteran guard Tyrece Radford has once again stepped up, scoring 34 points in the last two games. However, it’s been the consistent play of junior guard Manny Obaseki and sophomore forward Solomon Washington, as both combined for 32 points in Wednesday’s victory.

So, where do the Aggies sit in the Tournament conversation? According to ESPN’s Joe Lunardi, A&M is still on the outside looking in, but in the newest NET rankings, the Aggies are in a good position at No. 49 with six Quad 1 wins and a 10-9 Quad 1 and Quad 2 cumulative record.

If the Aggies can pull out a road win against the Rebels on Saturday, a win or two in the SEC Tournament should solidify a spot in the Big Dance.

North Carolina stays put in NET rankings after beating Notre Dame

The UNC basketball program stayed put in the latest NET rankings after a win over Notre Dame on Senior Night in Chapel Hill.

The win over Notre Dame was a sweet one on Senior Night for the North Carolina Tar Heels, helping send out the seniors on a positive note. It also helped them clinch at least a share of the Atlantic Coast Conference regular season title.

A win for UNC on Saturday at Duke gives them the title outright while a loss sees the two split it. But what the win didn’t do for UNC was improve their NET ranking.

North Carolina stayed put at No. 10 in the updated NET rankings on Wednesday, just one spot behind Duke who is at No. 9.

The Tar Heels haven’t really seen much movement in these NET rankings lately, staying anywhere from No. 8 to No. 12 depending on the result from the day before. A top 10 NET ranking is still strong as it includes UNC’s 6-4 Quad 1 record.

Saturday will provide another opportunity for a Quad 1 win for the Tar Heels as they head to Duke. And if they want to keep any slim hopes of a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament alive, they really need a win and to run the table in the ACC Tournament as well.

Florida shoots up NET rankings after dismantling Alabama at home

The Gators are now just outside the NET rankings top 25.

Florida basketball exploded on its home floor inside the O’Connell Center on Tuesday night, putting up triple-digit points en route to a beatdown of the highly-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide, 105-87.

Following the win, the Orange and Blue rose eight spots from No. 34 on game day to No. 26 overall in the NET rankings; the previous update after the South Carolina loss had it at No. 33. Todd Golden’s team now sits between the No. 25 Villanova Wildcats and the No. 27 Boise State Broncos.

Here’s how the quadrant system breaks things up:

  • Quadrant 1: Home 1-30, Neutral 1-50, Away 1-75
  • Quadrant 2: Home 31-75, Neutral 51-100, Away 76-135
  • Quadrant 3: Home 76-160, Neutral 101-200, Away 135-240
  • Quadrant 4: Home 161-353, Neutral 201-353, Away 241-353

The Gators are 4-8 against Quadrant 1 opponents, 3-1 against Quadrant 2 opponents, 8-0 against Quadrant 3 opponents and 6-0 against Quadrant 4 opponents. They hold a 21-9 record overall and a 11-6 mark in Southeastern Conference play.

Florida wraps up its regular-season schedule on Saturday, March 9, in Nashville as the Gators travel for a rematch with the Vanderbilt Commodores. Tipoff is slated for 4:30 p.m. ET and the game will be broadcast on the SEC Network.

LOOK: MSU basketball moves up in NET rankings despite loss to Purdue

The Spartans have lost three straight games but their NET ranking has remained relatively high during the skid

The Spartans have lost three straight games but their NET ranking has remained relatively high during the skid.

Michigan State came up short in a tough battle at Purdue on Saturday night, which dropped them to 17-12 overall and 9-9 in Big Ten play. That loss, however, didn’t hurt the Spartans in the NET rankings but actually boosted them two spots. Michigan State now sits at No. 22 overall in the NET rankings.

The NET rankings are a metric used to help determine who will make the NCAA Tournament. Michigan State’s record suggests they are in trouble of missing of the big dance, but the NET rankings points to them having a good chance at still making it.

Michigan State will look to snap its three-game losing streak in their next game against Northwestern on Wednesday. After that, Michigan State will head to Indiana to finish up the regular season on Sunday. The Spartans could use a pair of wins to secure a spot in the NCAA Tournament, and at a minimum must win at least one of those games.

Tar Heels slide one spot in NET rankings after beating Wolfpack

Despite pulling away in the second half against NC State, the UNC men’s basketball team saw its spot in the NET rankings go downward.

After letting NC State seemingly make shots at will in the first half of Saturday’s rivalry game, the UNC men’s basketball team locked in and turned in an extremely-strong defensive performance in half two.

ACC-leading North Carolina (23-6, 15-3) beating its long-standing rival, 79-70, behind a second half in which it limited the struggling Wolfpack (17-12, 9-9) to 25 points. At one point, NC State missed 15 consecutive shots, allowing the Tar Heels to distance themselves and win yet another crucial matchup.

With one week left in the regular season, NET rankings are becoming all-important. UNC, despite its big win, dropped one spot to 10th in the latest NET rankings.

I’m not concerned in the least bit about this, as North Carolina is pretty much a lock to make the NCAA Tournament. The Tar Heels’ drop, though, could’ve been due to struggling in the first half against the 80th-ranked team in the NET.

UNC has two more chances to improve its NET number during the regular season: Tuesday, March 5 against Notre Dame for Senior Night, then Saturday, March 9 at Duke in a game that could decide the ACC’s top spot. North Carolina will then try for an ACC Tournament Championship on Thursday, March 14, as it received a double-bye.

Gators actually gain spot in NET rankings after South Carolina loss

Florida is right where they were following the Missouri win but a spot better than Saturday.

The Achilles heel for Florida basketball continues to fester like an open wound as the Gators once again succumbed to the zone defense in the final quarter of play, relinquishing a six-point halftime lead that resulted in an 82-76 loss to the South Carolina Gamecocks.

Following the defeat, the Orange and Blue rose from No. 34 on game day to No. 33 overall in the NET rankings, while remaining exactly where they were in our last update. Todd Golden’s team now sits between the No. 32 Mississippi State Bulldogs — whom Florida beat in Gainesville earlier this season — and the No. 34 Colorado State Rams.

Here’s how the quadrant system breaks things up:

  • Quadrant 1: Home 1-30, Neutral 1-50, Away 1-75
  • Quadrant 2: Home 31-75, Neutral 51-100, Away 76-135
  • Quadrant 3: Home 76-160, Neutral 101-200, Away 135-240
  • Quadrant 4: Home 161-353, Neutral 201-353, Away 241-353

The Gators are 3-8 against Quadrant 1 opponents, 3-1 against Quadrant 2 opponents, 8-0 against Quadrant 3 opponents and 6-0 against Quadrant 4 opponents. They hold a 20-9 record overall and a 10-6 mark in Southeastern Conference play.

The one Quad 2 loss represents the misstep at the Ole Miss Rebels on Jan. 10, who sit outside of the Quad 1 zone at No. 78. That also marks the nadir of Florida’s 2023-24 campaign.

The Gators return home for a rematch against the Alabama Crimson Tide on Tuesday, March 5, inside the O’Connell Center. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. ET and the game will be broadcast on ESPN.

Tar Heels climb up Top 10 in NET after beating UVA

After Saturday’s long-awaited win at UVA, the UNC men’s basketball team helping its NCAA Tourney seeding case and spot in the NET rankings.

After searching for defensive answers over the past six games, the UNC men’s basketball finally found them on Saturday afternoon at UVA.

North Carolina built an ugly, 10-point halftime lead and held the host Cavaliers to just a 5-of-30 mark in the first half. UVA started shooting the ball a bit better in half two, but the Tar Heels were locked in en route to a 54-44 victory – their first in Charlottesville since Feb. 25, 2012.

Neither team shot the ball well, with both UNC (21-6, 13-3) and UVA (20-8, 11-6) making 16 shots apiece. North Carolina finished 32 percent from the field, while the Cavaliers shot a horrendous 27.6 percent. Despite the Tar Heels’ poor shooting mark, Cormac Ryan enjoyed yet another strong outing, making six 3-pointers to lead all scorers with 18 points.

With its major win, first-place UNC rose up to ninth in the latest NET rankings. North Carolina is sandwiched between Iowa State (eighth) and Creighton (10th), both of whom are expected to make deep runs in the NCAA Tournament.

The Tar Heels certainly helped their case for a higher seed with yesterday’s win, as they were projected to a third. If UNC can win out, capping its regular-season off with a sweep of Duke, there’s potential to rise further up the NET and maybe re-snatch a top seed in the Big Dance.
