Florida basketball slips slightly in NET rankings after UK loss

Unsurprisingly, the Gators lost a little ground in the NET rankings after Saturday’s loss, but it’s not much.

A slow start once again doomed Florida basketball, as the Kentucky Wildcats turned up the pressure for the entire 40 minutes and came away with a 72-67 win inside of Rupp Arena on Saturday night. [autotag]Colin Castleton[/autotag] had a game-high 25 points to lead all scorers, but his teammates’ inability to make clean passes and get back on transition defense made it all go to waste in the losing effort.

The Gators entered the game ranked No. 41 in the NET rankings and fell just two spots after the Quadrant 1 road loss to No. 43. Florida now holds a 2-8 record in Quad 1 games along with a 1-2 mark in Quad 2, 6-0 in Quad 3 and 4-0 in Quad 4. Kentucky stands pat at No. 31 following its Quad 1 win.

Next up for the Orange and Blue is another tough opponent in the fifth-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide, who will host Florida on Wednesday, Feb. 8, inside Coleman Coliseum in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The Tide are currently ranked No. 3 in the NET. Tipoff for the midweek affair is scheduled for 9 p.m. EST and the game can be followed by watching ESPN2 or listening to the Gator Sports Network.

Ducks see NCAA Tournament chances improve after loss to No. 3 Arizona

The Ducks aren’t dead yet. After a close loss to No. 3 Arizona, Oregon’s NET ranking improved, and their tournament hopes are still hanging on by a thread.

If you watched the Oregon Ducks take on the No. 3 Arizona Wildcats on Saturday night, it felt pretty apparent that you were witnessing two NCAA Tournament teams duke it out on the hardwood.

A back-and-forth matchup that ended in a thrilling 84-81 victory for the Wildcats proved once again to Oregon fans that their team can play with the best of the best when asked to, and the Ducks almost became the first team in NCAA history to win road games against three top-5 ranked teams in one season. Unfortunately, Oregon couldn’t pull off the upset, and their tournament hopes took what might have been the final death blow.

Or did they?

If you look at the NET rankings, Oregon’s impressive performance actually helped the Ducks in the standings, and the game against No. 3 Arizona moved them up quite a bit.

With the bump from playing Arizona, the Ducks also have a chance to further move up in the standings this week with home games against No. 13 UCLA and No. 17 USC this coming week. Earlier in the season, Oregon made noise by upsetting both teams on the road in a single weekend, and will likely need to do so again in order to earn an at-large big.

In ESPN’s outlook of the current landscape, the Ducks are listed as one of the “First Four Out” teams, but they made note of the hope that Dana Altman’s squad should still have:

On the same day that Oregon played at Arizona, the Wildcats were named a No. 1 seed in the NCAA’s bracket preview. And seeing a desperate bubble team like the Ducks go toe-to-toe on equal footing with a confirmed No. 1 seed was both thrilling and a bit disconcerting. The basketball was amazing, but how did a team as self-evidently good as Oregon get to the point where it’s being shown on the “first four out” list? At least Dana Altman’s team still has hope even after falling to the Wildcats by three points. Home games are up next against UCLA and USC.

The Ducks still have a lot of work to do, but if they can continue the solid play they showed on Saturday night and push the Southern California teams to the brink, earning a couple of top-25 wins, their tournament hopes are still alive. Should they lose either game, there’s still the hope that they can run the table in the Pac-12 tournament and get in that way, as well. It won’t be easy, but there is certainly still a chance…

Dana Altman’s Ducks see small bump in polls after mountain sweep; Oregon women drop in NET

After the unlikely mountain road trip sweep, Dana Altman’s team saw a slight bump, but Kelly Graves’ squad stumbled in the NET following back-to-back losses.

[jwplayer QXkxCJS6]

There was a little bit of a role reversal for the Oregon Ducks men’s and women’s basketball teams this past week when it came to their poll position heading deeper into the month of February.

After a blazing hot January for both teams, the past couple of weeks has seen a brief return to reality. For Dana Altman and the men’s team, that stumble came at the end of January with a home loss to Colorado. However, they bounced back with some vengeance this past weekend, picking up the program’s first-ever win in Boulder by blowing out the Buffaloes on Thursday, and then going on to beat the Utah Utes on Saturday and end their mountain road trip with an unlikely sweep.

The weekend’s success wasn’t quite enough to get the Ducks back into the top-25 of the Ferris Mower’s Coaches Poll, but they did receive 5 votes, which was up from the one vote they got last week.

Rank Team Record Points Change
1 Gonzaga 19-2 786 (18)
2 Auburn 22-1 784 (16) -1
3 Purdue 20-3 698
4 Kentucky 19-4 682 +3
5 Arizona 19-2 666
6 Duke 19-3 649
7 Houston 20-2 605 +2
8 Kansas 19-3 602 +2
9 Texas Tech 18-5 481 +5
10 Baylor 19-4 478 -2
11 Providence 20-2 477 +4
12 UCLA 16-4 424 -8
13 Illinois 17-5 411 +5
14 Wisconsin 18-4 389 -3
15 Villanova 17-6 368 -3
16 Ohio State 14-5 308
17 Michigan State 17-5 280 -4
18 Tennessee 16-6 231 +2
19 Marquette 16-7 193 +5
20 Texas 17-6 157 +1
21 USC 19-4 148 -2
22 Saint Mary’s 19-4 89 +6
23 Connecticut 15-6 85 -6
24 Murray State 22-2 68 +9
25 Wake Forest 19-5 51 +9

For Kelly Graves and the women’s team, the weekend will definitely hurt them a bit. After dropping both games during their Arizona road top, losing to both the Wildcats and the Arizona State Sun Devils, the Ducks are expected to drop from No. 22 in the USA Today Coaches Poll.

While the coaches’ poll is one way to look at the standings, a different way is by using the NET Rankings. The men’s team moved up to No. 49 in the NET after entering the weekend at No. 51. Meanwhile, the women’s team dropped to No. 13 after starting the road trip at No. 11.

The coming stretch of basketball is going to be critically important for both schools as they try to close in on March with their best basketball on the court. Dana Altman’s team is hovering a little too close to the tournament bubble for comfort, and while Kelly Graves’ team is in a good position to make the tournament, there’s a good chance that they can play host to their early games if they continue to win.
