49ers release DL for 3rd time as part of practice squad tweaks

More practice squad moves for the 49ers:

The San Francisco 49ers on Thursday announced a small tweak to their practice squad.

Defensive end Jonathan Garvin, who spent most of August with the 49ers in the preseason, was released to make room for defensive tackle Nesta Jade Silvera.

This marks the third time Garvin has been let go by the 49ers. They released him as part of final cuts on August 27, but re-signed him to their practice squad shortly after. He was released from the practice squad in mid-September, then re-signed to that unit in early October. Now he’s been released again to become a free agent.

Jade Silvera spent the first portion of this season with the Las Vegas Raiders after they made him a seventh-round pick in last year’s draft. As a rookie he posted two tackles in two games. This season he played in all seven games for Las Vegas and racked up eight tackles.

It makes sense the 49ers would want to add some defensive tackle depth to the practice squad after undrafted rookie DT Evan Anderson was promoted to the active roster. San Francisco has dealt with a slew of injury problems on the DL, so having an additional DT in the building helps insulate them from another injury up front.

Raiders sign former Bengals 3rd round defensive lineman, cut their own drafted DT

In an attempt to upgrade the interior defensive line, the Raiders signed former Bengals DL Zach Carter and cut DT Nesta Jade Silvera

The work at defensive tackle continues for the Raiders midway through the season. Today they officially signed Zach Carter to the active roster off of their practice squad.

Carter was a third round pick by the Bengals in 2022. He played three seasons in Cincinnati and was cut earlier this month. The Raiders then signed him to their practice squad a week later and now he has been added to the active roster.

The Florida alum appeared in 37 games in Cincinnati with 16 starts. He put up 55 combined tackles along with one sack, two tackles for loss, and four QB hits.

In a corresponding move, the Raiders waived DT Nesta Jade Silvera who they had selected in the seventh round of the 2023 draft out of Arizona State. Silvera appeared in nine games over the past two seasons with no starts. He had ten combined tackles in that time. Last Sunday he was relegated to special teams duties while Matthew Butler and Jonah Laulu were part of the DT rotation.

Who steps up for Raiders with Christian Wilkins on injured reserve

The Raiders have a tough task trying to replace Christian Wilkins Sunday against the Steelers and for the next four weeks at least.

Some players are fairly irreplaceable. At least in terms of expecting the next guy on the roster to be able to offer anything comparable in terms of talent and production. Christian Wilkins is one such player. But the Raiders have no choice but to play who they’ve got and hope for the best.

The start DT was placed on injured reserve this week, which means he will be out at least four weeks srarting with Sunday’s game against the Steelers.

Four of the team’s five games this season it’s been Adam Butler who has aptly started alongside Wilkins and that will continue. The two were linemates in Miami in 2021. Filling in for Wilkins will take a village.

It means it will be a rotation which would be led out by John Jenkins, but include second year DT Nesta Jade Silvera, rookie Jonah Laulu and third year former fifth round pick Matthew Butler who was signed to the active roster off the practice squad this week.

“You can’t replace Christian Wilkins,” said Antonio Pierce. “But you can do yourself and be the best version of yourself and that’s what we’re going to ask them to do. Just do your job. When I asked them this week, just do right. Just do right. Don’t go outside the box, don’t be somebody else, don’t try to make that game-winning play or that game-winning tackle, just keep them linemen off our linebackers, get some knockback, and use your hands.”

Last week Laulu got 19 snaps, which was his most of the season. It was also the next most snaps after Adam Butler, Jenkins, and Wilkins. He figures to be the next man up this week as well. While Matthew Butler and Jade Silvera will rotate in as well.

“Matthew Butler has done an outstanding job,” Antonio Pierce said on Friday. He’s been on the practice squad, he’s been active throughout his career here and this is a great opportunity for him going forward to step up.

Chiefs release former Raiders mid-round draft pick days before season opener

Chiefs release former Raiders mid-round draft pick days before season opener

The Chiefs hit the practice field today to start game week preparations for their Thursday Night Football opener. And they do so without Neil Farrell Jr and Matt Dickerson. As the two were both released from the team’s practice squad.

Farrell was a round four pick by the Raiders in the 2022 draft as part of Josh McDaniels and Dave Ziegler’s first draft class. He played nine games as a rookie in Las Vegas, but after showing up out of shape to begin 2023 camp, he was ultimately traded to the Chiefs before the start of his second season.

The former LSU Tiger appeared in three games last season and was among the players the team waived on cutdown day, after which he was re-signed to the practice squad. That lasted a few days before the team simply cut him altogether.

Farrell was one of four defensive tackles the Raiders selected in McDaniels and Ziegler’s two drafts with the Raiders. Only one still remains on the team — 2023 seventh round pick Nesta Jade Silvera. The two highest drafted ones were Farrell and 2023 third round pick Byron Young. Young was waived last week and claimed by the Eagles.

As it happens Dickerson once spent time with the Raiders on their offseason roster in 2021.

Raiders cut 2023 third round DT Byron Young

Raiders cut 2023 third round DT Byron Young

After just one season and six game appearances, Byron Young has been cut. Despite an open competition at defensive tackle last season, the third round rookie barely saw the field. And now he’s been cut in favor of seventh rounders Nesta Jade Silvera and waiver claim Jonah Laulu.

Young admitted during camp that he had an attitude problem as a rookie last year. That he thought being a third round pick, he earned certain things and was angry he wasn’t given the benefit of the doubt. It’s admirable that he admitted that, but he’s still got to perform better. And from all indications, he didn’t.

He got pushed around all preseason, leading head coach Antonio Pierce to openly criticize the team’s defensive interior. Something had to give. And it was Young who gave…up his spot on the roster.

There is, of course, still a chance the Raiders could bring him back onto the practice squad. Just as they did when they cut 5th round DT Matthew Butler last year. But as of now, he’s out and has to work to prove he belongs on an NFL roster again.

10 veterans and returning Raiders firmly on roster bubble

There are a lot of new faces in Raiders camp this year. And with new faces comes new competition to beat out familiar faces. Likewise there are a few veteran players on this team who could see their jobs taken by new blood.

These are the ten returning Raiders and veterans most in danger of being on the outside looking in come roster cutdown day.

This eight-year veteran backup is only here because he’s familiar with Luke Getsy’s system. That only goes so far though. The team could very decide to keep only two quarterbacks on the active roster. And it wouldn’t take much for a more intriguing option to come available on the waiver wire.

Along with being injured through most of camp, this sixth year veteran just hasn’t looked special in his time on the field. Other than Tom Telesco knowing him from their time with the Chargers, Guyton doesn’t really offer anything invaluable to the team. They could be better off taking a chance on Tyreik McAllister or snagging a talented receiver on the waiver wire.

This sixth-year veteran appeared in one game for the Raiders last season. The Raiders would have to, first of all, keep four tight ends for him to stick. And second of all, he’d have to prove he is the best choice. And quite frankly Cole Fotheringham has looked better.

Meredith has been with the Raiders the past two seasons and appeared in 17 games last season. There is eight offensive lineman ahead of him, all of whom have a very good chance of making this roster. He is the one who will be sweating it out on Tuesday and probably Wednesday as well.

He appeared in just six games as a rookie, with no starts. Not exactly what you hope to get from a third round pick. He has admitted he had an attitude problem, which is commendable. But his level of play has not offered any indication that he has made a second year leap. He was on the field a lot in the finale, after which head coach Antonio Pierce was not at all pleased with the play of the interior line.

Nesta Jade Silvera was also in that 2023 class. He was selected in the seventh round. He was also on that line that was getting gashed on the ground against the 49ers. There has been an opening for someone to step up and be the fourth interior defensive lineman. Has he shown he can be that guy? I’m not sure he has.

Is it possible the Raiders could cut all three of these former drafted defensive tackles? Sure it is. Antonio Pierce made it clear that he will be looking to the waiver to try and improve the depth along the interior defensive line. There is a chance one of these three sticks on the initial 53, but it’s just as likely that will be a short stay in favor of a waiver claim.

This 2023 sixth round pick looked good at times this preseason. But he hasn’t been able to stay healthy. Meanwhile undrated rookie Amari Gainer has looked great. If Burney doesn’t head for injured reserve, he may just lose out to Gainer.

Speaking of guys who can’t stay healthy. Facyson missed almost the entire 2023 season and now he’s been missing since early in camp. If the best ability is availability, the Raiders can’t hang onto him in the hopes that he can get healthy and stay that way. Either he heads to IR, or they give up on him and move on.

Smith has a fairly good chance of sticking around. But he’s down the depth chart far enough that he is in some danger here. The Raiders selected the Jim Thorpe Award winner Trey Taylor in this past draft, so you’d figure they’d like to hold onto him, making Smith potentially the fifth safety, providing they keep that many safeties on the initial 53.

5 Raiders Defensive Players to watch in Preseason finale vs 49ers

There are still some roster spots to be won, impressions to be made, and playing time to be earned. Each of these players will be out to make their presence felt on defense Friday night.

Jade Silvera has been behind Byron Young on the depth chart through the past two weeks. But when given the chance, Jade Silvera has looked better than Young. If he outshines Young again, it’s possible he could start taking snaps from Young, and possibly overtake him on the depth chart come the season.

Speaking of players passing up higher drafted players…The former fourth round defensive end has looked considerably better than Raiders second year former number four overall pick Tyree Wilson. At this point, Wilson only has his top pick potential getting him reps. But that only goes so far when a team has to think about which player gives them the best chance of getting to the quarterback when called upon.

Gainer is trying to get on this roster and has had an uphill battle to do it. He had a great preseason opener and didn’t do much in last week’s home opener against the Cowboys. Best two out of three?

With Brandon Facyson once again struggling to get healthy, this fourth round rookie could be the next man up after the three starters. They like his length, but is he ready to go should one of the starters go down? Or to be a dime back?

Raiders cut 7th round rookie DT Nesta Jade Silvera

Raiders cut 7th round rookie DT Nesta Jade Silvera

Raiders fans got excited about the potential of rookie DT Nesta Jade Silvera due to some accounts of how he was performing in one-on-ones in training camp. That potential has resulted in just two appearances this season and now the 7th rounder has been waived by the team with three games remaining.

Jade Silvera has not appeared in a game in nearly two months. He had a combined two tackles in his two appearances. Not what many had hoped or expected his rookie totals to be.

Some accounts during training camp were that he was very powerful. I saw evidence of this power as well, but the results were less noteworthy. He could drive back offensive linemen, but there was little in the way of technique or focus. He had me thinking of former Raiders third round pick Eddie Vanderdoes who also lasted just one season with the Raiders and whose NFL career lasted just 19 games with two teams.

It’s certainly possible Jade Silvera could get his career on track and I wouldn’t be surprised if he wasn’t invited back to the practice squad and/or as a reserve/future signing to give him another offseason to show improvement.

Several Raiders players get new numbers as they make 53-man roster

Raiders once had a 00. Now they have a 0 for the first time in franchise history.

Camp is over, which for many players means their camp numbers are gone too. With so many players being cut from the roster, it opens up a lot of possibilities for number changes as well.

A few players took advantage of the opportunity to change up their numbers.

0 – CB Jakorian Bennett

He becomes the first Raiders player to ever wear the number 0. The Raiders, of course, had 00 Jim Otto, but no single zero. Bennett was number 29 in camp and preseason.

14 – WR Tre Tucker

The rookie gets himself a number in the teens. He was wearing number 89 in camp and preseason while Chase Garbers wore number 14,

29 – S Chris Smith II

Smith nabs the 29 worn by Jakorian Bennett. Smith wore the number 42 in camp.

81 – TE Austin Hooper

Hooper gets the Tim Brown special. Cam Sims had worn it in camp while Hooper had worn number 82.

99 – DT Nesta Jade Silvera

Silvera wore number 97 in camp while Jordan Willis wore 99 and was cut.

Ballers & Busters: Raiders preseason Week 3 vs Cowboys

Raiders Ballers & Buster for their preseason finale vs Cowboys

One more chance for many hopefuls on this Raiders training camp roster to show what they can do, both for the Raiders coaches as well as the rest of the league.

How did they do in this final exhibition? Let’s take a look

Ballers

WR Kristian Wilkerson

With one, and possibly two, receiver spots up for grabs on the Raiders roster, Wilkerson set out to prove he was worthy of it. And he put his best foot forward, catching 10 passes for 122 yards. No other Raiders receiver came with seven catches of his total and only one receiver came within 100 yards of his receiving total.

K Daniel Carlson

Went three for three in the game, including a 62-yarder and a 50-yarder. That 62-yarder was an upright splitter which looked like it would’ve been good from 70 yards. What a weapon.

RB Damien Williams

He doesn’t just have a great first name, he was breaking off big yards in chunks. He had two of the top four longest plays by the Raiders in this game and the only two runs that went for over ten yards. He had the Raiders’ only touchdown in the game on a 24-yard burst. Then he had a 20-yard run to lead out the third quarter that led to a field goal. He finished with 54 yards and a TD on six carries (nine yards per carry).

G Jordan Meredith

On both of those long Williams runs, Meredith laid a key block. His only mistake in the game was being flagged for holding.

DT Nesta Jade Silvera

Early in the second quarter, he had a run stuff for one yard on third and two. A few plays later he made the stop on a three-yard run. His best play may have come on a 16-yard catch in which he raced into the secondary to make the tackle. His five combined tackles led all Raiders defensive linemen. He added a QB hit as well.

Honorable Mention

QB Aidan O’Connell — Another efficient day for the rookie. Though he was unable to throw any touchdowns, he didn’t turn the ball over either.

WR Cam Sims — Had another fantastic grab in this one. This time reaching up high to pluck a 22-yard grab up the left sideline. The skills he has shown as a jump ball target are valuable.
