UFC Fight Night 214 video: Neil Magny submits Daniel Rodriguez, sets welterweight wins record

Neil Magny submitted Daniel Rodriguez, passed Georges St-Pierre on the wins list then called out Gilbert Burns at UFC Fight Night 214.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Neil Magny[/autotag] has sole possession of the all-time welterweight wins record after defeating [autotag]Daniel Rodriguez[/autotag] in the UFC Fight Night 214 co-main event.

Magny (27-10 MMA, 20-8 UFC) showed his trademark grit and durability en route to the upset of Rodriguez (17-3 MMA, 7-2 UFC) by third-round D’Arce choke submission at the UFC Apex. With the win, Magny breaks out of a tie with UFC Hall of Famer Georges St-Pierre for most wins at 170 pounds in company history (via Twitter):

Rodriguez opened the fight with a very aggressive approach mixing up his leg kicks and hands. Magny survived the initial storm, and began to settle in on the feet. Magny tied up Rodriguez on multiple occasions to wear down the cardio, then in the final minute managed to take foe to the mat and control until the final seconds, where Rodriguez broke free and charged forward with a solid punch.

Rodriguez carried his late momentum in the second round, where he began to put serious pressure on Magny with his left hand and body punches. Magny struggled to keep his back off the fence line, and he tried to charge forward to get some space back. Rodriguez remained persistent, though, and kept pushing his pace with his hands. Magny tried for a late takedown, but Rodriguez fended him off.

With the win up for grabs in the final frame, Rodriguez landed some hard shots that backed Magny up to the fence. Rodriguez charged and went for the takedown, but before long he found himself on the bottom. Magny set up the D’Arce choke, and forced the tap at the 3:33 mark of Round 3 (via Twitter):

After the win, Magny reveled in his record-setting performance, but said his goals aren’t complete. He still wants to be UFC champion, and named Gilbert Burns as the opponent he wants next to move closer to his first shot at gold.

“Gilbert Burns, let’s do it in Brazil,” Magny said in his post-fight interview with Daniel Cormier. “(UFC 283 on) January (21st).”

The UFC stays on its Las Vegas home turf this week with a pair of women’s strawweight contenders at the top of the lineup.

UFC Fight Night 214 takes place Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The card streams on ESPN+.

(Click here to open a PDF of the staff picks grid in a separate window.)

In the main event, [autotag]Marina Rodriguez[/autotag] (16-1-2 MMA, 6-1-2 UFC) takes on [autotag]Amanda Lemos[/autotag] (12-2-1 MMA, 6-2 UFC) at 115 pounds. Rodriguez is a -240 favorite at Tipico Sportsbook; the comeback on Lemos is +180. Our 11 editors, writers, radio hosts and videographers are going with Rodriguez unanimously.

In the co-feature, perennial welterweight contender [autotag]Neil Magny[/autotag] (26-10 MMA, 19-8 UFC) takes on [autotag]Daniel Rodriguez[/autotag] (17-2 MMA, 7-1 UFC). Magny is a slight favorite at -125, but our staff members are going with Rodriguez at a hefty 9-2 clip.

Also on the main card, [autotag]Josh Parisian[/autotag] (15-5 MMA, 2-2 UFC) meets [autotag]Chase Sherman[/autotag] (16-10 MMA, 4-9 UFC) in a heavyweight bout. Sherman is a slight favorite at -140, and he has a 7-4 lead in the picks.

[autotag]Tagir Ulanbekov[/autotag] (14-2 MMA, 2-1 UFC) is more than a 2-1 favorite in his flyweight bout against [autotag]Nate Maness[/autotag] (14-2 MMA, 3-1 UFC) and has a big 9-2 picks lead.

And to open the main card, [autotag]Grant Dawson[/autotag] (18-1-1 MMA, 6-0-1 UFC) is a -220 favorite in his lightweight bout against the unbeaten [autotag]Mark Madsen[/autotag] (12-0 MMA, 4-0 UFC). But despite that, our staff pickers are bucking the odds and have Madsen near unanimous at 10-1.

In the MMA Junkie reader consensus picks, Marina Rodriguez (74 percent), Daniel Rodriguez (60 percent), Parisian (59 percent), Ulanbekov (57 percent) and Dawson (56 percent) are the choices.

UFC Fight Night 214: Neil Magny vs. Daniel Rodriguez odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 214 odds and lines between Neil Magny and Daniel Rodriguez, with MMA picks, tips and predictions.

In a welterweight bout on the main card, Neil Magny and Daniel Rodriguez meet Saturday at UFC Fight Night 214 — also known as UFC on ESPN+ 72 or UFC Vegas 64 — at the UFC’s APEX Facility in Las Vegas. Let’s analyze Tipico Sportsbook‘s lines around the UFC Fight Night 214: Magny vs. Rodriguez odds, and make our expert picks and predictions.

The fight can be viewed on ESPN+ with the prelims beginning at 4 p.m. ET and the main card at 7 p.m. ET.

Magny looks to bounce back after being submitted by Shavkat Rakhmonov in the 2nd round on the Tsarukyan-Gamrot card last time out in late June.

It was a rare stoppage for the 35-year-old “Haitian Sensation”, as his previous 6 bouts had all ended via decision, with 5 victories. If the veteran Magny has a weakness, it is the ground game, as he is now just 3-5 via submission in his 36 career professional bouts.

Rodriguez is looking to build on a 4-bout win streak, including a split-decision win over Li Jingliang at UFC 279 last time out in September. D-Rod has gone the distance in 4 of his last 5 fights.

Magny will look to keep this fight upright, and D-Rod isn’t terribly strong on takedowns, so that bodes well for the veteran. Magny will also look to keep Rodriguez at a distance thanks to a 6-inch reach advantage.

UFC Fight Night 214: Magny vs. Rodriguez picks and predictions

Records: Magny (26-10-0) | Rodriguez (17-2-0)

Fight result (2-way line or moneyline)

Rodriguez is a punching machine, holding a huge 7.75-to-3.59 significant strikes landed per minute advantage. However, I like the fact MAGNY (-125) should be able to use his half-foot reach advantage to keep his distance and avoid a big knockout blow.

It won’t be pretty for Magny, and it will be an uphill climb. To win this fight, he is going to have to avoid the big punches D-Rod is going to want to throw, and he is going to need to avoid the mat. Can he do enough to wow the judges and win on points? I think so, but Rodriguez has the punching power to tip the scales in his favor with one big blow, so play the 2-way line lightly.

Over/Under (O/U)

Over 2.5 Rounds (-240) is a little on the expensive side, costing more than 2 times your potential return. That’s a lot, especially with a guy like Rodriguez who can win a fight with one punch.

I think Magny hangs around and draws this one out, going the distance, but even Yes (-210): Fight to go the distance is a little pricey for my liking.

PASS, and just play the 2-way line.

Nearing a decade in UFC, Neil Magny relearned how to get priorities in order before Daniel Rodriguez matchup

Ahead of UFC Fight Night 214, Neil Magny reflects back on when he feared his tenure was over – until Donald Cerrone gave him advice.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Neil Magny[/autotag] reflects on his UFC journey with an incredulous smile. It’s been almost a decade since his debut – and a little over 10 years since he was on “The Ultimate Fighter.”

Time flies when you’re fighting and winning, as Magny (26-9 MMA, 19-8 UFC) realized as he sat at a UFC Fight Night 214 pre-fight news conference. It seems like just yesterday he as in between his third and fourth UFC bouts, fearful his tenure was over.

“It’s crazy to look back on it and see how long it’s been that I’ve been here now, especially with the way my UFC career started,” Magny said ahead of his 28th UFC bout. “I didn’t win ‘The Ultimate Fighter.’ My UFC career started going 1-2 that first year. I was literally at the point like, ‘All right. Maybe this is as far as I’ll (go) at this point.’ I remember literally walking into training one day and I’m like, ‘Man, I might be getting cut. I lost two fights in a row. I haven’t heard from the UFC in a while. This might be it.'”

That’s when friend and former training partner [autotag]Donald Cerrone[/autotag] came through with some great advice.

“Donald Cerrone at the time was like, ‘Why don’t you email the UFC right now and get to training? There’s nothing you can do about it anyway. Let them know. Ask for a fight. If they give it to you, great. If they cut you, great. But there’s no point sitting around bitching about it now. It’s not going to change anything,'” Magny said. “I was like, ‘You know what? You’re right. Let’s see what happens.’ I sent the email, set my phone down, went ahead and trained and after training, I had a fight in my email for a couple weeks later.’

“… That fight started a seven-fight winning streak for me in the UFC. It catapulted my career to where it is now. I’m definitely grateful that I stuck with it and didn’t make that decision to hang it up and move on, sort of speak. I’m fortunate to be here 10 years later.”

[lawrence-related id=2593527,2593504]

Saturday at UFC Fight Night 214, Magny looks to bounce back from a June loss to Shavkat Rakhmonov when he fights Daniel Rodriguez (17-2 MMA, 7-1 UFC). Even this far deep into his UFC career, Magny said he’s still learning ways to crucially improve. That was particularly the case during this camp.

“Surprisingly, there’s still a lot to learn in this game,” Magny said. “The last fight was definitely one of those lessons. For me, the biggest thing is getting complacent. … I’m in a position where I have business outside of fighting. I have real estate outside of fighting. I have two kids to worry about. I have a marriage to worry about. All these different things that aren’t necessarily negatives, but at the end of the day, they end up being distractions, especially in the training camp. (I’ve been) just learning how to prioritize and be present at the same time. It’s a difficulty. My last fight definitely put me in a position to kind of start figuring that thing out more.”

“… Fighting the best guys in the world, I can’t go out with the idea like, ‘OK cool. I had an OK training camp. I had an OK fight week.’ I need to make sure the training is impeccable. There are no flaws. There are no holes in it. I make sure I check every box that I need to and I go in there and get the job done.”

[autotag]Marina Rodriguez[/autotag] (17-1-2 MMA, 6-1-2 UFC) is set to face fellow Brazilian, [autotag]Amanda Lemos[/autotag] (12-2-1 MMA, 6-2 UFC), in a bout that could put the winner in the conversation to fight next week’s UFC 281 championship bout between Carla Esparza and Zhang Weili.

After Daniel Rodriguez’s injury withdrawal, bout with Neil Magny rescheduled for UFC’s Nov. 5 event

Daniel Rodriguez and Neil Magny will still get the chance to fight each other next.

[autotag]Daniel Rodriguez[/autotag] and [autotag]Neil Magny[/autotag] will still get the chance to fight each other next. It just won’t happen on its original date.

After Rodriguez (16-2 MMA, 6-1 UFC) revealed an elbow infection would prevent him from fighting Magny (26-9 MMA, 19-8 UFC) at UFC Fight Night 212 on Oct. 15, the promotion has opted against seeking a replacement and rescheduled the welterweight contest for UFC Fight Night on Nov. 5, which takes place at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

The promotion announced the change on Friday.

Rodriguez competed on the re-shuffled UFC 279 card less than two weeks ago. Originally scheduled to face Kevin Holland, Rodriguez drew Li Jingliang instead after Holland was pulled to face Khamzat Chimaev. Rodriguez edged out Jingliang by split decision to notch his fourth straight win.

Meanwhile, Magny will look to rebound from his submission loss to unbeaten prospect Shavkat Rakhmonov at UFC on ESPN 38 in June. Prior to that, the 35-year-old veteran scored back-to-back wins over Geoff Neal and Max Griffin.

The latest UFC Fight Night lineup for Nov. 5 includes:

  • Neil Magny vs. Daniel Rodriguez

Daniel Rodriguez injured, out of UFC Fight Night 212 matchup vs. Neil Magny

The next UFC event has taken a hit after Daniel Rodriguez withdrew due to injury.

[autotag]Daniel Rodriguez[/autotag] won’t be getting a quick turnaround after all.

A rising UFC welterweight, Rodriguez (17-2 MMA, 7-1 UFC) announced Thursday on social media his withdrawal from his UFC Fight Night 212 bout vs. [autotag]Neil Magny[/autotag] (26-9 MMA, 19-8 UFC), which takes place Oct. 15 at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

According to an Instagram Stories post, Rodriguez withdrew from the bout due to a laceration suffered in his Sept. 10 bout vs. Li Jingliang that has not healed. Rodriguez won that bout by split decision.

“Got a little bit of bad news,” Rodriguez said. Woke up this morning, elbow f*cking throbbing. I got this in the last fight and it kind of spread. So it looks like I’m out of the fight.”

Meanwhile, Magny has struggled to find opponents for the Oct. 15 date. He most recently competed in June when he had a two-fight winning streak snapped vs. Shavkat Rakhmonov.

It’s unknown at this time if the UFC will seek a replacement opponent for Rodriguez, but he said he hopes the matchup gets rescheduled for November. Magny reacted to the news, and said he also hopes for a new date (via Instagram):
