Offensive/Defensive Players of the Week from Nebraska’s Win Over North Dakota

Here are the Offensive/Defensive Players of the Week from Nebraska’s win over North Dakota

On September 3, the Nebraska Cornhuskers secured their first victory of the season against the North Dakota Fighting Hawks 38-17.

Despite the final score, this was a close game. At halftime, the game was tied 7-7, and North Dakota’s offense was able to enjoy sustained drives against Nebraska’s defense.

Nevertheless, it is great to get a win on the board, and there were some positive takeaways.

On offense, Nebraska’s rushing attack led the way, as the Cornhuskers racked up 244 rushing yards. Meanwhile, quarterback Casey Thompson completed 14 out of 21 passes for 193 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception.

Without further ado, here are Nebraska’s offensive and defensive players of the week.

Inside the Box Score: Key stats from Nebraska’s win over North Dakota

The Nebraska Cornhuskers defeated the North Dakota Fighting Hawks 38-17, and two key statistics leaped out of the box score.

The Nebraska Cornhuskers secured their first win of the season, as they defeated North Dakota 38-17.

However, that victory was a lot closer than the final score indicated. At halftime, the two teams were actually tied 7-7. Once again, Scott Frost and Nebraska’s coaching staff made some questionable decisions. Inexplicably, they attempted an onside kick with the lead in the third quarter. Special teams’ play, in general, was a complete mess.

Nevertheless, the Cornhuskers’ offense got into a rhythm in the second half, and they were able to cruise to victory.

Let’s take a look at two key statistics from Saturday’s game.

Nebraska’s ground game sparks first victory of the season

Nebraska records its first win of the 2022 season!

Nebraska notched the first win of the 2022 season as the Cornhuskers defeated their guests, the North Dakota Fightin’ Hawks, 38 to 17 on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium. Anthony Grant led the way for the offense with 189 yards on 23 carries for two TDs and a long of 46 yards. Ajay Allen helped in the running attack by carrying the ball 11 times for 58 yards and one touchdown with a long of 14. No other Husker was in positive rushing yards. Casey Thompson was 14 of 21 passing for the afternoon with 193 yards, two TDs, and one INT. The most telling quote after the game was from head coach Scott Frost who said, “this team can be a great team. It’s not right now. That was my message to them.” If anyone thought that the coaching staff would allow the team to relax after their first win of the season, it’s clear Frost sent a muted message that there’s still work to do. And now the grind for Week 3’s preparation begins.

The Nebraska Cornhuskers are preparing for the home opener of the 2022 college football season as they welcome the North Dakota Fightin’ Hawks to Memorial Stadium on Saturday afternoon. It’s been a busy offseason for the venue the Huskers have called home since 1923.

First a few facts about the famous home of the Huskers.

Address: 600 Stadium Drive

Capacity: 85,458

Record Attendance: 91,585

First Game: vs. Oklahoma (Win 24-0) October 13th, 1923

Broke Ground: April 26th, 1923

Cost: $430,000

Expanded: 1694, 1965, 1966, 1972, 1998, 2006, 2013

There are a few changes at Memorial Stadium this year. One is that a long-standing tradition will not occur during the 2022 season. Athletic Director Trev Alberts says fans will not be releasing red balloons from the stands after the first home touchdown in each game this year. He cited a helium shortage for the cancelation heading into the season. Alberts stated that any helium the university acquires would be used only for medical purposes.

There will also be a new playing surface this season. The school had first looked at replacing the current field in 2020 but scrapped that plan due to budget concerns. FieldTurf was first installed at Memorial Stadium in 1999 and was replaced in 2005 and 2013. The 2013 replacement cost approximately $380,000.

The new turf looks a little different than in years past. The Huskers dropped the two-toned green field seen in recent years for a single shade of darker green. However, the end zones have not changed, with the north end zone reading Huskers with the south end zone reading Nebraska. The traditional N remains at midfield as well.

Director Trev Alberts did admit during a radio interview in January that the school did look at replacing the field turf with a grass surface but decided against it due to the cost of the project and the heavy use of Memorial Stadium. Alberts said the project estimate for a grass playing surface came in at “nearly $8 million.” He also said, “we’re doing more and more things in Memorial Stadium.” “… we’re hosting convocations and graduations in there (Memorial Stadium).

Now a recap of every Nebraska home opener since 2000.

Nebraska Quarterback Casey Thompson asks fans to stick with team

The Cornhusker’s Quarterback is excited about his first game at Memorial Stadium.

Nebraska Quarterback Casey Thompson met with the media earlier this week to talk about Nebraska’s loss in Ireland, the lack of a bye week after an international game, the need to get the run game started, and his feelings heading into his first game at Memorial Stadium. In his first game for Nebraska, the Texas transfer was 25 of 42 for 355 yards with one TD and two INTs.

Thompson is a refreshing character in the football/media relationship. He has something that most players and almost every coach has an aversion to, and that’s to be open and honest with the media. He doesn’t try to duck questions, and he’s willing to push back if he feels the question being asked is unfair. I’m curious about his comments after the home opener. It’s clear he’s excited for his first game at Memorial Stadium. Let’s hope the experience lives up to his expectations.

Frost talks to the media one last time before Saturday’s game

The team is making their final preparations before Saturday.

Nebraska head football coach Scott Frost spoke to the media one final time before taking the field on Saturday against North Dakota. Saturday’s game will be the home opener for the 2022 Nebraska football season, and the Huskers have had success in home openers over the last three and a half decades. During Scott Frost’s run as head coach, he is 3-1 in home openers, while Nebraska is 34-2 over the last 36 seasons.

Frost talked about his job security with the press saying,

“I learned as a quarterback so I have no idea what’s being said. I’m worried about this team. my phone wasn’t even charged for most of the week. All you can do is work as hard as you can and do the right things. I think our kids know that. I try to share that with the kids as much as I can. If they have a chip on their shoulder I think that’s a good thing for us.”

He also commented on the injury to Tight end Travis Voklek and said that he’s getting close to being able to take the field, but he is currently “day to day.” He hurt his ankle during the game against Northwestern. Find more quotes from the head coach below.

Kickoff on Saturday is at 2:30 pm on the Big Ten Network.
