Otabor wins javelin at NACAC U23 Championships

A successful weekend for the Nebraska Track and Field team continued with another individual championship.

A successful weekend for the Nebraska Track and Field team continued with another individual championship over the weekend. Rhema Otabor won the javelin at the NACAC U23 Championships with a throw of 57.48 meters.

That distance was also a new meet record. Earlier in the month, Otabor won the BAAA Bahamas National Championship in the javelin with a throw of 59.75 meters. Last month, she set a personal best (at the time) and won the NCAA title with a throw of 59.49 meters.

The NACAC U23 Championships is a three-day and 88-event track and field meet between North American, Central American, and Caribbean Athletic Associations for athletes under the age of twenty-three.

A Nebraska Track and Field athlete won his event at the 2023 NACAC U23 Championships. Maxwell Otterdahl won the shot-put on his final throw of 19.41m.

Otterdahl has had a successful 2023 season. The Rosemount, Minnesota native won the Big Ten discus title and finished second in the shot-put.

He was also a first-team All-American for the 2023 campaign. The athlete would finish fourth in the shot-put at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field and 13th in the discus.

The Cornhusker was one of several Nebraska Track and Field athletes to participate in the NACAC U23 Championships.

A Nebraska Track and Field athlete won the triple jump at the NACAC U23 Championships over the weekend.

A Nebraska Track and Field athlete won the triple jump at the NACAC U23 Championships over the weekend. Rhianna Phipps won with a jump of 13.61 meters, a new personal record.

Just last month, Phipps earned her spot as a second-team All-American at the NCAA Championships. She finished 13th with a jump of 13.35 meters.

Phipps competed at Kansas State for one season before coming to Nebraska for the 2023 season. The NACAC U23 Championships is a three-day and 88-event track and field meet between North American, Central American, and Caribbean Athletic Associations for athletes under the age of twenty-three.

Multiple Huskers qualify for NCAA Track and Field Championship

Nebraska has had a successful week of track and field!

Three Husker track and field athletes have qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships at the Preliminary Round on Wednesday at the University of Arkansas. Maxwell Otterdahl (shot put), Burger Lambrechts Jr. (shot put), and Alex Talley (hammer throw) each finished in the top 12 of their event to earn one of 24 spots for the NCAA Championships at the University of Oregon in June.

Tally finished sixth in the hammer throw with a throw of 219-9. He finished sixth at nationals last year while at North Dakota State. Otterdahl placed sixth in the shot put after throwing 64-6 1/2. He placed eighth at nationals in 2021. Lambrechts Jr. finished ninth with a throw of 62-7 1/4. He was the Big Ten indoor champion and finished fourth at the indoor championships.

Nebraska athlete named “Field Athlete of the Championships”

A Nebraska athlete who won became the first Husker to accomplish this since 2004!!

On Wednesday, a Nebraska track and field athlete was named the Big Ten Men’s Field Athlete of the Championships. Max Otterdahl won both the shot put with a throw of 64-8 and the discus with a throw of 190-11 at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships over the weekend. Otterdahl is the first Husker since Carl Myerscough at the 2004 Big 12 Championships to win the shot put, and discus at the same championship meet.

Otterdahl is the third Husker to win Big Ten Field Athlete of the Championships in two seasons. He joins 2021 indoor shot put champion Burger Lambrechts, and Alex Talley won the weight throw and finished second in the shot put. Otterdahl will now prepare for the NCAA Division I Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships preliminary meets, one for the east region and one for the west. Those meets will take place May 25-28, with qualifiers advancing to the National Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon. It will be the 14th time the outdoor championships have been held in Oregon.
