Rhule says Nebraska has to get better

Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule met with the media following Nebraska’s 13-10 loss to Minnesota.

Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule met with the media following Nebraska’s 13-10 loss to Minnesota. Rhule said that while he was obviously frustrated with the result, he wanted to reinforce this is only the beginning.

“We’re on the front end of something that we’re building,” Rhule said. “And I think at the end of the day, to be able to rush for that many yards. And I know some of them were on the quarterback. But they give you 11 eligible players, right? You can use who you can. I look at it the other way. To think of the mistakes we made, to have seven penalties, to have the four turnovers, and still a good team like Minnesota that averages nine wins a year has to kick the field goal.”

He was also realistic, saying Huskers still have a lot of work to do.

“Now, we have to fix it. We have to get better. But I’m not even thinking about anything that ever happened before I got here. It has nothing to do with me. I don’t want our players to think about that. I’m thinking about what’s next. I’m thinking about getting back and watching this tape. I’m thinking about next week.”

The Huskers must prepare for the Colorado Buffaloes in Boulder on Sept. 9.

After leading for most of the second half, Nebraska wound up on the wrong side of the scoreboard as a late 10-point swing brought Minnesota to a 13-10 win on opening night.

Had it been a cleaner game for Nebraska, then maybe the Huskers would have come away with the road and conference win. If you missed the game, catch up with the key moments from Nebraska and Minnesota for FOX College football’s official Twitter account.

Studs and Duds from Nebraska’s 13-10 loss to Minnesota

As much as things change, they stay the same.

As much as things change, they seem to stay the same. Nebraska had many opportunities to put away Minnesota in the season opener only to fall short,  13-10.

From missed throws, interceptions, fumbles and dumb penalties, there is much for the Cornhuskers to clean up before they take on Colorado. Even in a loss, some players stepped up. Some other players we want to see more of as Nebraska builds off this loss.

Here are Nebraska’s studs and duds from Week 1 against Minnesota. Scroll below to take a look and see for yourself who shined and who didn’t.

Husker football falls to Minnesota in season opener

Despite all the new, it seemed to be same old Nebraska.

Nebraska enters the 2023 season with a new head coach, a new coaching staff, and many new players. But despite all the new, it seemed to be the same old Nebraska as the Huskers blew a 10-3 lead to Minnesota to fall 13-10 to open the year.

The Golden Gophers’ win came off the foot of Dragan Kesich, who nailed a 46-yard field goal as time expired. Kesich’s kick came following two straight Nebraska drives, resulting in turnovers and ten total points for Minnesota. The Huskers also suffered numerous penalties, suffering seven on the night, resulting in a loss of 55 total yards, including one on the goal line right before halftime.

Outside of that, it was a tense battle throughout. Only three points were scored in the first half, which was by Kesich to give Minnesota a 3-0 lead. Right before halftime, the Huskers attempted to score a touchdown with 11 seconds left. The choice resulted in an interception and no points, which came back to haunt Nebraska in the end.

But the Huskers opened the second half up with a bang. Rahmir Johnson kicked things off by returning the kickoff 65 yards to set his team up. Then, off a broken play, Jeff Sims took a botched lateral from Anthony Grant and found a wide-open Alex Bullock for a 34-yard touchdown.

Outside of three interceptions on the night, Sims went 11-of-19 through the air for 114 yards. He also rushed for 91 yards off 19 carries. Later in the game, Omar Brown snatched an interception, leading to Tristan Alvano extending Nebraska’s lead to 10-3 off a 27-yard field goal.

Then, with less than five minutes left, Grant fumbled, setting the Golden Gophers up near midfield. This led to Athan Kaliakmanis nailing a pass to Daniel Jackson on fourth down for a 13-yard touchdown, tying the game with 2:32 left.

Sims followed it up with a backbreaking interception with less than a minute left. It all culminated with a game-winning field goal by Kesich, sealing the defeat for the Huskers.

This is the fourth straight season Nebraska opens the season with a loss. The team’s next game will be at Colorado on Sept. 9. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m. and can be viewed on FOX.

The season opener will also be the first game under new head coach Matt Rhule. He returns to college football after spending the last three seasons with the Carolina Panthers of the NFL.

Nebraska begins the season with back-to-back games on the road. The last time the Huskers started a season that way since 1995.

Three defenders land the remaining single digits days before kick off

Prior to spring training, new head coach Matt Rhule stripped all players who wore a single digit in previous seasons and reallocated their numbers to another one for a placeholder.

Before spring training, new head coach Matt Rhule stripped all players who wore a single digit in previous seasons and reallocated their numbers to another one for a placeholder. This is because single-digit numbered jerseys are typically the more valuable numbers for players, and wanted players to earn the right to wear those most desired ones.

The head football coach is implementing a system that awards single-digit jersey numbers to the toughest players on the team, a tradition he utilized at Temple and Baylor.

“What we decided was 0 through 9 would go to the nine or 10 toughest guys on the team” Rhule said. “When I say ‘toughest’, we define that for the guys. Really the guys who best exemplify what it means to be a Cornhusker, to be accountable, to be dependable, to be tough, hardworking, competitive every single day. As we get into training camp, the players will vote on it, and we hope it becomes a tradition. As we have embraced all the great traditions that are here, hopefully this will be something new that people will get in to.”

With the first kickoff just days away now, we finally have the three players who will round out all ten single-digit jerseys.

Nebraska head football coach Matt Rhule met with the media on Friday morning. The Husker head coach is in the midst of preparations for Nebraska’s Week 1 game against Minnesota.

He confirmed during his availability that the coaching staff will begin handing out the blackshirts later this weekend.

“Yeah, we’re going to do that starting on Sunday. That’ll come out on Sunday.”

Defensive Coordinator Tony White has previously talked about the tradition and was looking forward to continuing that part of Husker history.

“The most important thing I can do with that tradition is acknowledge it. I have to talk to people who have instilled, who have lived, who have done it the right way. I’ve heard many different ways they have done it, from bringing old guys back,  taking it away, waiting a couple of games, do it fall camp. I’ve heard a lot of different things already. I think it’s one of the best traditions in college football.”

Social Media reacts to Nebraska’s loss to Minnesota

It was a tale of two games at Memorial Stadium this Saturday!

It was a tale of two halves as the Nebraska Cornhuskers fell to the Minnesota Golden Gophers 20-13 at Memorial Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Huskers jumped out to a 10-0 lead after the first quarter, and it was all down here after that.

Chubba Purdy continues to look overwhelmed at the quarterback position. The Florida State transfer was 6 for 16 for 41 yards with one interception. Backup Logan Smothers also saw limited action going 5 for 10 for 80 yards. Anthony Grant was the workhorse in the running game with 21 carries for 115 yards with a long of 36 yards. Why he didn’t get more touches is beyond my understanding.

Today’s performance on offense was enough for me to say that regardless of what happens with the head coach hire, Mark Whipple won’t be returning to Lincoln next season as the offensive coordinator. As a play caller, he refuses to adjust or adapt his scheme to the situation or talent. Instead, week after week, he forces his philosophy on a team that is not built to run such an offense.

The lack of adjustments overall by the Cornhusker coaching staff was quite stunning. Top to bottom, there were no significant changes to any phase of the game as the lead slipped away in the second half. You have to wonder if this loss puts an end to Mickey Joseph’s candidacy to become the permanent head coach at Nebraska.

Nebraska now sits at 3-6 on the year, meaning the Cornhuskers must win out or face a sixth straight season with no postseason birth. Below is a collection of social media reactions to Nebraska’s loss to Minnesota. Let us know what you think. Where does Nebraska go from here?
