Rhule believes seniors have built something special

While Nebraska’s first season under Matt Rhule has come to a close, the Husker head coach believes this year’s senior class has created something special.

“I can’t tell you how much I wanted that game for them and to walk off the field winners. For them to lose in that fashion I wouldn’t wish that on anybody. They are winners. Very grateful for that senior class. They stood in the gap. Everyone might not be able to see it yet, but I truly believe they’ve built something really really special.”

The head coach went on to state that while he’s upset with the way the season ended, the Cornhuskers had their chance to make game-winning plays and failed to execute.

“I hate the way it ended. Credit to Iowa. They are a really good football team. They play a certain way. Obviously had our chances down the stretch. We just weren’t able to make it happen. The things that affected us all year, affected us. And we lost the football game obviously.”

Nebraska falls in overtime to Wisconsin

Based off the first two drives, it seemed as though Nebraska came to dominate on offense against Wisconsin.

Based on the first two drives, it seemed as though Nebraska came to dominate on offense against Wisconsin. But those hopes were soon extinguished on a gutsy fourth-down call by head coach Matt Rhule. Instead of attempting a 50-yard field, the Huskers went for it on fourth and one, only to be halted by the Badgers.

Then everything changed. Wisconsin outscored Nebraska 24-3 from there on out, resulting in a 24-17 overtime win for the Badgers.

Chubba Purdy earned the start for the Huskers and delivered the best showing by a Nebraska quarterback in the last few weeks. Purdy threw for 169 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 105 yards and a touchdown. Purdy’s touchdown pass saw him throw a dot to freshman Jaylen Lloyd, who broke a tackle and took off for a score.

But Nebraska never found its way into the endzone after that. Tristan Alvano sent the game into overtime with a 30-yard field goal after missing a 42-yarder earlier, but the inconsistent offensive play resulted in the loss.

Despite surrendering 24 points, the defense made big stops on the night, including back-to-back fourth down stops and holding Braelon Allen to just 62 yards rushing. Allen did score two touchdowns as Wisconsin slowly but surely worked its way into the endzone each time.

Nebraska falls to 5-6 on the season and will return home to host Iowa on Friday afternoon. The Huskers need to win their season finale to become bowl-eligible. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m. and can be viewed on CBS.

Nebraska ready for Wisconsin

Nebraska will continue in their quest for bowl eligibility this weekend when the Huskers travel to Madison to face the Wisconsin Badgers.

Nebraska will continue in their quest for bowl eligibility this weekend when the Huskers travel to Madison to face the Wisconsin Badgers. The Badgers are also breaking in a new head coach, Luke Fickell.

Fickell joined Wisconsin after spending the previous six seasons at Cincinnati. The current Badger head coach has a history with Nebraska as Fickell coached against the Huskers in 2011 when he acted as the interim head coach at Ohio State.

The Cornhuskers would win that game 34-27. Head coach Matt Rhule has high praise for Fickell and the work he’s done wherever he goes.

“They’re a really good football team with really good players.  Big. Physical.  Raw Athletic. Explosive. Luke Fickell is an excellent football coach. I don’t know him great but I know him well enough. We never really crossed paths. I left the American. We’ve become friendly over time.”

Nebraska will be looking to end their losing streak to the Badgers. Wisconsin is currently on a nine-game winning streak against the Huskers.

The Badgers lead the all-time series with Nebraska 12-4. Rhule says he’s excited about his first trip as a coach to Madison, Wisconsin.

“I’ve been to Madison once as a player, never as a coach. Cold. National TV. Jump Around. Unbelievable experience. Coach (Barry) Alvarez. It should be awesome. I’m excited about it. They’re an excellent football team. It’ll be a lot like the other games. It’ll come down to the fourth quarter. We’ll try to make one more play than them. They’ll have to make one more play than us. We’ll see who does it.”

Nebraska and Wisconsin will face off on Saturday at 6:30 from Camp Randall Stadium. The game can be seen on NBC. Find photos from last year’s game against Wisconsin below.

Husker defense continues to impress

In a season of ups and downs, the Nebraska defense has been one of the few spots of consistency.

In a season of ups and downs, the Nebraska defense has been one of the few spots of consistency. Through ten games, the blackshirts rank No. 17 overall in total defense at 306.9 yards per game. They also rank No. 18 in the country, surrendering only 18 points per game.

Following Nebraska’s loss to Maryland on Saturday afternoon, head coach Matt Rhule told the media that the defense was dominant but still left several big plays on the field.

“It’s the same thing, it’s the same game. They’re all the same games for us. It was pretty dominant on defense for long stretches and then an explosive pass. Dominant on defense, an explosive pass. If we continue to minimize those things, we could be even better on defense. They took the ball away today, which was great. I don’t know if we sacked the quarterback or not, maybe once or twice. I thought the defense came to play.”

The Huskers rank No. 16 overall in sacks with 29.0 through ten games. Rhule went on to say that it is no mystery why these tough losses keep happening

“As I told them, the things that cause winning and losing it’s not this mysterious thing out there. It’s winning the turnover battle, fourth-quarter shutouts, all the different things that we were not able to do tonight. We still had a chance to win. I know we’re pretty disappointed, but we’ll regroup.”

Nebraska will take the field again on Saturday when they travel to Madison, Wisconsin, to take on the Badgers. Kick-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.

Rhule frustrated by Huskers turnover problem

Nebraska football head coach Matt Rhule met with the media following the Huskers’ 20-17 loss to Michigan State.

Nebraska football head coach Matt Rhule met with the media following the Huskers’ 20-17 loss to Michigan State. Rhule expressed his frustration with his team’s continuous turnover problem.

“There’ll never be an excuse for being minus three (in turnovers), right? It’s minus three and you lose by three. I mean, you’re probably a better football team than that. So, as I said to our guys, we’re a good football team. We’re finding out what it’s like to play games with consequences late in the year. When you come in after winning a couple of games they’re finding out for the first time that people are ready for you.”

The Huskers entered Saturday’s game ranked 126th in the nation in turnover margin with a minus nine through eight games. After Saturday’s game against Michigan State, they now sit at minus 12 for the college football season. Rhule admitted that this recent setback is a painful lesson for the team to learn.

“They studied you all week. And you’re gonna have to fight, scratch and claw and not just assume, oh, we stopped them for two drives, we’re gonna get them going now. Or, hey, we ran the ball. For the first drive coming out of halftime we had 30 rushing yards in the drive and then we sputtered. So there’s a lot more lessons to learn from this game. It’s painful, but they have to learn.”

Nebraska now prepares to host the Maryland Terrapins this Saturday with an 11:00 a.m. kickoff on the streaming service Peacock.

Rhule excited for matchup with Michigan State

Nebraska head football coach Matt Rhule met with the media on Monday afternoon.

Nebraska head football coach Matt Rhule met with the media on Monday afternoon. The Huskers enter this weekend’s game with a record of 5-3 (3-2), while Michigan State holds a record of 2-6 (0-5).

The man in charge expressed his excitement for this week’s game against Spartans.

“I’m proud of the guys with the win last week. There are things we want to be going through this week to improve. I’m excited for the game, excited to have the chance to play in Michigan State. On a personal note, I’m excited to coach against Coach (Harlon) Barnett. He’s one of the great men in football for many, many years, that young guys like me look up to.”

He went on to praise the former All-American defensive back and the job that he’s done as an interim head coach.

I think what he’s done for his alma mater – he was an All-American there, he was a great player there – what he’s done for his alma mater, stepping in and filling the void, I have a lot of respect for. I have a lot of respect for this football team. Coach (Mark) Dantonio is back with them. They’re really, really, really physical up front, in the upper half of the Big Ten in rush defense. It’s a challenging matchup for us in the way that we play, so it should be a heck of a game.”

Nebraska and Michigan State will kick off at 11:00 a.m. this Saturday. The game can be viewed on FS1.

Rhule on sign stealing ‘it’s why you should have mics in the helmets’

Nebraska head football coach Matt Rhule met with the media on Monday afternoon.

Nebraska head football coach Matt Rhule met with the media on Monday afternoon. The man in charge was asked about the recent controversy regarding allegations of Michigan stealing opponents’ signs and signals.

Our friends at Wolverines Wire have reported extensively on the matter.

“ESPN reported Connor Stalions, the Wolverines staffer allegedly caught up in the illegal sign stealing investigation, has left a paper trail of having purchased 30 tickets to 11 Big Ten teams’ games in the past three seasons. Sign stealing is legal if not done by a staffer in person, so there is perhaps some gray area, but we’ll find out more in the coming days or weeks.”

Rhule told the media that sign stealing is a common practice in the world of college football.

“Yeah, sign stealing happens every game. There’s nothing wrong with teams looking over trying to steal our signs. There’s nothing wrong with us looking at their signs. It’s why you should have mics in the helmets. All these coaches that vote against it every year, they don’t want to teach their quarterback. In the NFL, the quarterback goes out there with three play calls. If I see the free safety’s foot like that, I might go one high and check to this play.

He also made it clear that he believes the reliance on signs and signals has stunted the development of college football players.

But it’s also why the kids are less prepared. That’s why there 100% should be – you get rid of all the stupid signs on the sideline so we can get pictures of rockstars and all that, and we could just play football the way it should be. You go to a high school game, there’s technology on the sideline. You go to an NFL game, there’s technology on the sideline. Go to college, there’s nothing. It should be that. But that’s sign-stealing.

The head coach went on to say that the rules in place are necessary and must be enforced.

I will not carry that over into going and filming someone else’s practices or something like that, or filming someone else’s games. That’s completely something different. And I’m not saying that happened, but I think what’s wrong partly in our society right now is we say someone does something against the rules. And sports need rules, right? Sports need rules to keep competitive balance, and when something does something against the rules, we say ‘well, should that really even be a rule?’ It is the rule. We don’t get five downs. In-game, stealing of signs, we play against somebody, and I know that person has friends on the next staff, I know if they have our signs, they have them the next week, that’s all part of the game. You have to do what you do. We should absolutely have technology, but if there’s a rule, the rule should be followed. I’m not speaking about what’s happening right now because I don’t know what happened, but if that is happening somewhere, it’s completely, completely wrong.”

Rhule on victory over Northwestern ‘we’re not going to play in fear’

Nebraska head football coach Matt Rhule met with the media following the Cornhusker’s 17-9 victory over the Northwestern Wildcats on Saturday afternoon.

Nebraska head football coach Matt Rhule met with the media following the Cornhusker’s 17-9 victory over the Northwestern Wildcats on Saturday afternoon. When asked about the performance of the passing game, Rhule stated that the plays were there to be made.

“We’re not going to play in fear, the passes were there. A lot of our passes were like, hey it’s a pass with a quarterback draw. The pass might happen and I said at one point we’re starting to get a little bit on hey we’re running the ball, we’re better when we are mixing it. We come out of a wheel route and Alex (Bullock) is wide open. We didn’t quite hit it today. I don’t know how we’re going to get better if we don’t call it and work through it.”

Nebraska had its lowest passing yard output of the season, with starting quarterback Heinrich Haarberg going 8-17 for 85 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions

Through Nebraska’s first seven games, the Cornhuskers are averaging a paltry 134 passing yards per game. Rhule also made it clear that he will never shy away from the opportunity to make a big play.

“I don’t worry about things that, like three quick passes and our defense is tired. When the time of possession is tilted in our favor or when it’s close or even. The defense isn’t tired. I don’t worry about those things. If I was thinking that way I probably wouldn’t and I would say hey just run the ball, we have a lead. But we took the shot to Malachi (Coleman). We had some other shots in the game we thought we were going to have and made a couple of plays.”

Rhule went on to say that the Cornhuskers will continue to be aggressive on the offensive.

“I just think we have to continue to be aggressive and we just have to coach our way, and work our way through these phases of, you know what, hey it’s not super pretty right now just keep playing.”

Nebraska will take the field next against the Purdue Boilermakers on Saturday, October 28, at 2:30 p.m. at Memorial Stadium. Find a photo gallery of the victory over Northwestern below.
