Nebraska at Iowa odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Sunday’s Nebraska at Iowa odds and lines, with expert college basketball picks, predictions and best bets.

The Nebraska Cornhuskers (15-15, 8-11 Big Ten) look to finish the season in style with a victory over the Iowa Hawkeyes (19-11, 11-8) in Iowa City Sunday at 2 p.m. ET (Big Ten Network). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Nebraska vs. Iowa odds, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

If Nebraska wins, it would sweep the Hawkeyes in the season series for the 1st time since joining the Big Ten Conference. If Iowa wins, it will assure itself a double bye in the conference tournament and will give coach Fred McCaffery a school-record 127th conference win.

This is a rematch of a 66-50 Nebraska win at Pinnacle Bank Arena on Dec. 29 which saw 5 Cornhuskers score in double digits. Iowa has not been held to 50 points often in recent years. It will look to avenge this lop-sided loss on Sunday.

Nebraska at Iowa picks and predictions

Prediction

Iowa 79, Nebraska 66

Moneyline

PASS.

Iowa needs a win to gain a double-bye in the Big Ten Conference Tournament. While Nebraska has been solid at home, the road has been a different animal and I do not foresee Iowa having any issues with getting the win. I would never wager -700 on a favorite and this is no exception.

Against the spread

IOWA -11.5 (-110).

After losing to Nebraska 66-50, Iowa will be looking for more then seeding in this game. It will be looking for revenge.

Despite the Cornhuskers only getting to 66 points, they had 5 players reach double digits. This balance can be good in a defensive battle. But in an offensive matchup like the one that should occur in Carver-Hawkeye Arena Sunday, the explosiveness of Iowa will shine and cover the 11.5-point spread.

Over/Under

OVER 154.5 (-105).

Nebraska has gone Over the total in 6 straight games overall to end the season. For the Hawkeyes, they have several streaks of going Over of late.

Iowa is 21-6 to the Over after winning its previous game by more than 20 points. It has also gone Over in 19 of 27 games against a team with a losing road record. And 15 of the Hawkeyes last 21 games overall have also hit the Over.

Iowa scores at home. This will be another game in which they push the pace up and down the floor and force the Cornhuskers to keep up. Nebraska will try. And this will lead to an Over 154.5 being the side to make a play on.

Nebraska at Iowa odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Friday’s Nebraska at Iowa odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Nebraska Cornhuskers (3-8, 2-6 Big Ten) visit Iowa City to take on the Iowa Hawkeyes (7-4, 5-3) Friday at 4 p.m. ET (Big Ten Network). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Nebraska vs. Iowa odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

Nebraska is on a 5-game slide, recently losing to Wisconsin 15-14 as a 10-point underdog in its home finale in front of the 382nd consecutive sellout. Wisconsin scored the winning TD with 35 seconds left. It has been a season to forget for the Cornhuskers, and AD Trev Alberts and the new coach, whoever he may be, have a big project ahead.

Iowa has struggled all season on offense. The season started slow as the Hawkeyes got out to a 3-4 start. Since then, the team rallied to win 4 straight and put itself in position to win the Big Ten West with a win in this game. Defense has been the key all season for Iowa, and it came through once again last weekend in a 13-10 victory at Minnesota with a fumble recovery and an interception. The Hawkeyes were 2.5-point underdogs and have covered 4 games in a row.

Iowa has only scored 151 points in Big Ten play for an 18.9 PPG average, while it has allowed 136 points for a 17.0 PPG allowed average — and that includes giving up 54 points to No. 2 Ohio State. Iowa plays low-scoring, tight games and this should be another one.

Nebraska at Iowa picks and predictions

Prediction

Iowa 23, Nebraska 9

Moneyline

PASS.

If Iowa (-435) wins this game, it’s in the Big Ten Championship Game to face the winner of Saturday’s Michigan-Ohio State game.

With the Hawkeyes at home and the Cornhuskers basically giving up on the season, Iowa will win here, but the -435 price is way too high and not worth the risk.

Against the spread

BET IOWA -11 (-110).

Nebraska wants to get through this game and move into the offseason. With an offense in shambles, the Huskers will not find points easy to come by. Playing against an elite Iowa defense will not help either.

Iowa will smother Nebraska. The Hawkeyes surprisingly did not have a defensive score Saturday against Minnesota. They will this week.

TAKE IOWA -11 (-110),

Over/Under

BET UNDER 38.5 (-110).

As mentioned, the Hawkeyes averaged 18.9 PPG points in conference play. They averaged 17.4 PPG in all games. Iowa does not have an offense that will scare anyone, but its defense should. Toss out the Ohio State game and the defense allowed 11.7 PPG in Big Ten play. In its 3 non-conference games, the defense allowed a total of 13 points.

The Hawkeyes will control this game and use field position to win a slow, boring contest. UNDER 38.5 (-110) is my FAVORITE PLAY in this game.

Nebraska at Iowa: Three things to know

  1. Nebraska is coming off its first back-to-back wins since Nov. 28 and Dec. 1. Over Saturday and Monday home games against Minnesota and Rutgers, the Cornhuskers outshot their opponents, 53.2% to 36.2%.
  2. Iowa is coming off a Sunday blowout win at Ohio State after having been routed at Michigan on Feb. 25. The Hawkeyes have won four of their last five games. Iowa has held opponents to a 38.4% mark from the floor over that stretch.
  3. The ‘Huskers are playing their second game since leading scorer Teddy Allen left the team. Allen averaged 16.4 points per game in 22 games this season. F Lat Mayen stepped up admirably in the Rutgers win. Mayen made five 3-pointers en route to scoring a career-high 25 points.

Against the spread (ATS)

Nebraska’s improved shooting of late has been part of an overall trend in the right direction and on both sides of the ball. The NU improvements haven’t necessarily shown up in the win column yet, but since early February several ‘Husker losses have been in games more closely contested than the final score would indicate.

The Cornhuskers are 3-1 ATS in their last four efforts. BACK NEBRASKA +17.5 (-110).

Over/Under (O/U)

The total here seems a tad high but not enough to send dollars into the fray. PASS.

Nebraska at Iowa: Three things to know

  1. Nebraska is coming off a disappointing 41-23 loss to Illinois – the Cornhuskers were 17-point favorites. The upset included five Illini scoring drives of 65 yards or more, an NU garbage-time score, and Nebraska allowing a balanced 490 yards of total offense.
  2. Iowa has won five straight in the series, including a 27-24 victory in Lincoln last fall. Five of the last nine games in the series have been decided by one score.
  3. A staunch Hawkeye defense hasn’t allowed more than 24 points in any game this season. At 16.0 points per game allowed, the Iowa defense ranks 12th in FBS. In yards allowed, the Hawkeyes rank 14th against the run (102.6 YPG) and 39th against the pass (217.2 YPG).

Nebraska at Iowa: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Iowa 31, Nebraska 21

Money line (ML)

PASS on this set of lofty numbers and hard-to-outrace true odds.

Against the spread (ATS)

The road team is 5-2 ATS in the last seven games in this series. And this Friday? NEBRASKA +14 (-110) is a SOLID PLAY.

The ‘Husker offense has been undone on passing downs and in the red zone, but it’s one with a much higher ceiling than what’s indicated by being ranked 107th in scoring (20.8 PPG). Nebraska can get loose with the pigskin, but a minus-1.25 turnover-margin-per-game figure, ranking 118th in the nation, looks to be out of bounds and ripe for regression.

Then there is the turnover-enhanced perception of the Hawkeyes. Iowa has logged three straight impressive wins – over Michigan State, Minnesota ad Penn State. Iowa was a plus-7 in TO margin over that trio of games. In last week’s win over the Nittany Lions, the Hawkeyes registered five scoring drives under 60 yards. Now, the Hawkeyes head into this tilt with a couple injury question marks on the offensive line.

Nebraska has plenty of warts. Iowa is the better team. Just not by more than 10 on the line.

Over/Under (O/U)

The O/U trends on both sides exhibit a lot of cross signals. So, does a drill-down on X-and-O strengths and weaknesses. A total anywhere from 49-56 is all too likely: PASS but with a slight lean toward the UNDER 53.5 (-115) in a game that could get run-heavy and involve more field goals than normal.
