Rhule excited for Nebraska-Colorado primetime kickoff

Nebraska will play at home for all three non-conference games of the 2024 season.

Earlier this week, it was announced that the Nebraska Cornhuskers would host the Colorado Buffaloes under the lights of Memorial Stadium later this year. The two will face one another at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 7, in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Head coach Matt Rhule discussed the excitement surrounding the kickoff time on the Husker Radio Network on Tuesday evening.

We’ve had one home night game here so far, and it was a great experience. I think this is great for our fans and great for the game. The Nebraska and Colorado rivalry over the years and what it means. Obviously, they beat us last year. And for our guys to go out there early in the season, go out there on national television, and show the country the work that they’ve done and the team we have.

Nebraska will play at home for all three non-conference games of the 2024 season. They will also host UTEP on August 31 and Northern Iowa on September 14.

“I don’t know anything other than you know. They said hey look maybe like a high ankle (sprain). Then he wanted to go back in and I didn’t see any point of putting him in there you know?”

Sims finished the game nine-of-15 passing for 106 yards with one interception and two fumbles. He also had ten carries for 67 yards and a touchdown.

Studs and Duds from Nebraska’s loss to Colorado

The Huskers didn’t put on their best showing against Colorado.

The Huskers didn’t put on their best showing against Colorado. The Buffs defeated Nebraska on Saturday by a score of 36-14

While the same can be said about Colorado to a different extent, Nebraska struggled often to stay on their level. As the game progressed, the Buffalos flexed and flexed and flexed again and only seemed to be getting stronger, while Nebraska only seemed to be getting gassed.

While the scoreline doesn’t reflect some players’ performances, it does highlight a trend that seeped over from Week 1, protecting the football. Below are a few players who highlight their successes, and some proved to be more detrimental to the team’s success.

Nebraska football falls to Colorado 36-14

Nebraska football falls to No. 22 Colorado 36-14

The Huskers faced a daunting task this week, travel out to Boulder, Colorado for a showdown against the Prime Time No. 22 Buffaloes. After blowing a 10-3 lead to Minnesota in week one, Nebraska once again suffered from its mistakes, resulting in a 36-14 loss.

The offensive struggles continued for Nebraska, despite moving up and down the field multiple times. Instead, it produced three fumbles, an interception and a missed field goal. This resulted in Colorado scoring 16 points off turnovers, which added to the 20 points given up by the Nebraska defense.

The Nebraska run game put up a solid performance, finishing with 222 total yards and having three different players rush for over 60 yards. But in the air, there were just 119 yards, 106 of those by Jeff Sims, who also had the three fumbles and interception.

Sims did rush for a touchdown on the first second-half drive, making it 13-7. But the offense couldn’t produce another touchdown drive until it was 36-7 with less than a minute to go.

Meanwhile, for Colorado, Shedeur Sanders put together another big game. Though he struggled in the first half, outside of Nebraska’s turnovers, he and the Buffaloes aerial game got things going in the second half. Sanders finished with 393 passing yards and two touchdowns. He also had a rushing touchdown but finished with -16 yards on the ground.

Nebraska’s defense did come in fighting, even producing eight total sacks. But with the Husker offense not picking up steam and making costly mistakes, the defense caved in enough for Colorado to pull away.

Nebraska falls to 0-2 on the season for the first time since 2020. The team returns to Lincoln for its home opener against Northern Illinois next Saturday. Kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m. and can be viewed on Fox Sports 1.

Watch: Jeff Sims scores on 57-yard QB designed run

Jeff Sims has been poor as a passer. This was always true of his game while at Georgia Tech, but what he does bring is athleticism and speed as a runner. Sims used his speed to an advantage as he took the ball 57 yards to score on a quarterback-designed run. Those kinds of moments are what prevent Rhule from making the switch as no other rostered quarterback brings this aspect to their game.

Nebraska has cut into Colorado’s lead by seven points and now trails 13-7 midway through the third. Catch the touchdown run below.
