The Nebraska Cornhuskers defeated Cal State Fullerton on Sunday afternoon. The Huskers 85-72 victory improved Nebraska’s record to 7-0 on the season, only the fifth time in school history and the first time since the 1992-93 season.
That season would see the Huskers finish 20-11 and earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. Nebraska has now scored 80 or more points in each of their last four games and have won their last 13 games when score 80+ points. Following the victory, head coach Fred Hoiberg said he believes his team still has a lot of work to do.
“Well, we have a lot to work on in our off week here and it’s an important week for us and first of all for recovery, we have a couple guys dealing with some nagging injuries. We played a lot of games in a short amount of time in the early portion of this season.
The head coach told the media that he’s looking forward to seeing the Huskers get back to what they’re good at as they get ready for the Big Ten season.
“Now it’s about getting back to what we were doing earlier, especially on the defensive end. I just feel like we’ve lost our edge a little bit on that side of the floor. We have to get back to rebounding, we have to get back to hitting, we have to get our physicality back. I thought our first-shot defense was better in the second half than it was in the first but then too many second-chance opportunities with 15 offensive rebounds. We cannot continue that trend.”
Hoiberg also stated that he has to manage his team’s mindset as the schedule will only get tougher for Nebraska moving forward.
“The way it will play out with the next few weeks with our schedule, we have to take two days off this week so we’ll be off tomorrow, come in for a good hard physical workout on Tuesday, off on Wednesday and then get three days to prepare for one of the top teams in the country.”
