New defensive backs coach brings ‘refreshing’ attitude to team

Nebraska defensive coordinator Tony White met with the media following practice on Tuesday afternoon.

Nebraska defensive coordinator Tony White met with the media following practice on Tuesday afternoon. Among the topics of conversation were the use of new technology in signaling plays and the new defensive backs coach, John Butler.

White believes that Butler’s attitude has been a positive influence on the defense since arriving on campus.

“The one thing that’s really cool with JB (John Butler) is that he’s humble to the point of ‘this is how we do it’,” White said. “He may have done it differently at other places, but this is our way, and he’s constantly changing terminology, constantly absorbing all of that stuff and fitting it in, as well as being able to say ‘I like these things in coverage’, ‘I like to do this’, ‘let’s see if we can do this’. I think, in terms of the guys, they know football. They know who can really help them in football.”

White says that Butler is clearly good at what he does and is a refreshing presence among the coaching staff.

“If you’re around him, he’s good at what he does. He’s good around the guys and he knows football. Those guys have taken to him. They’re starting to joke around with him and all that, so it’s fun to see out there. At the end of the day, he coaches them hard. He coaches them hard, which with this defense and the DBs, having five DBs out there, you have to be coached hard. Great players want to be coached hard. It’s really refreshing to have him in the room.”

Following practice, the Nebraska coaching staff will meet with the media on Friday, Aug. 16.

Nebraska quarterback describes his ‘welcome to college football’ moment

An Elite 11 quarterback, Kaelin threw for 2,225 yards, 17 touchdowns, and six interceptions.

A Nebraska quarterback recently discussed his ‘welcome to college football’ moment. Freshman Daniel Kaelin appeared on ‘The Let It Fly Show‘ and was asked by host Mike’l Severe about the process of adapting to college football and the difference between high school and college football.

A few people have asked me that, and at first, I didn’t really think of a moment. But then the other day I though of one and it was our second practice and it was third down stuff and there was a play… I ended up looking the wrong way. So I messed up the play, but I knew I had a check down, and I turned and had pressure in my face, so I just threw it away. I thought I threw it somewhere that no one could get it. I think it was Tommi Hill, but the speed that he broke on the ball all the way to the sideline, and he caught it. The speed is different.

Kaelin spent last season as one of the top prospects in Nebraska for 2024. An Elite 11 quarterback, he threw for 2,225 yards, 17 touchdowns, and six interceptions.

He is part of a competitive quarterback room heading into the 2024 season. He’ll be battling freshman Dylan Raiola and last year’s starter Heinrich Haarberg.
