College Football Betting Advice, Final Thoughts, Week 6

Texas A&M has yet to win a really, really, really big game under Jimbo Fisher. It won a few mid-range ones, but beating Florida would be a program changer, while a loss would mean a 1-2 start with a trip to Mississippi State up next. You know how this is going to go against the Gators – the only question is whether or not you believe in the 6.5. (hint: you should)
CFN Game Preview, Prediction

North Carolina plays way too many close games, it doesn’t roll the good teams when it wins, and Virginia Tech is better – at least if it’s healthy. The return of QB Hendon Hooker helps, and it would be nice if the line bounces back up – UNC -4 after starting -7 – but the Hokies might win this outright. Unfortunately, the Hokies at +155 on the money line isn’t enticing enough.
CFN Game Preview, Prediction
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

Just how screwed up is the line on LSU vs. Missouri? If this was in Baton Rouge – like it was supposed to be – this is LSU -20ish or so, but because it moved to Mizzou thanks to hurricane concerns, it’s at around -14. This is a plucky MU team that will fight for a full four quarters, but we all might be getting a bargain basement line on LSU here.
CFN Game Preview, Prediction
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

Oklahoma – Texas is as coin-flipy as it gets. Here’s the problem. Oklahoma is better than 1-2, but it couldn’t close in the losses to Kansas State and Iowa State because Spencer Rattler needs more at-bats. On the other side, Texas might be just plain meh. In what should be a dead-even game – it’s OU -2.5 – if everything is even, one side has the four-year starter, the other has the guy who hasn’t come through with games on the line.

One other thing – the over on the 72 is calling you, but don’t take the bait. Neither team is playing a whole lot of D, but 72 is still a big ask. It’s the fun early game, so of course you’re going to go over – just don’t go huge.
CFN Game Preview, Prediction

I know a few guys jumping all over Liberty -19.5 over ULM. With that caveat, ehhhhhhhhhhhh. ULM has been miserable so far, but the Liberty defense hasn’t been anything special and the Warhawk O is starting to get its legs. If this is 55-0 Liberty, I’ll tip my cap, but … ehhhhhhhhhhhh.
CFN Game Preview, Prediction
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

Is NC State good? Its defense hasn’t been anything to get fired up about, but I’m not about to get into a twist over getting rocked by a strong Virginia Tech team a few weeks ago – even if the Hokies were missing a ton of guys. Try this. I don’t think NC State is all that good, but I’m happy to take the 8 against Virginia to find out, and after beating Pitt on the road last week, I’m curious on the +250 money line play.
CFN Game Preview, Prediction
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

Speaking of money line plays …

You’re never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever going to do it, but at least give some thought to Vanderbilt +425 on the money line at home against South Carolina. You know the Commodores are going to score around 17 points, but that D could hold that O to 16. However, if you believe the Gamecocks can and will score 28, like them at -13.5.
CFN Game Preview, Prediction

Duke isn’t very good at college football this season. Syracuse isn’t very good at college football this season. Getting one point shouldn’t matter, but it’s the principle of the thing – the Orange as an underdog at home to Duke is insulting. Like the Orange you believe they can keep Duke from generating 19 sacks.
CFN Game Preview, Prediction

If you can get Army -29 somewhere against The Citadel, consider it. The Citadel trying to throw the ball in comeback mode makes the world a sadder place.

As we get started with the Saturday games, BYU is hosting Louisiana Tech. On Friday night. The line is cranking up from BYU -22 to -24.5, and it might only go way up from there. Louisiana Tech is good enough to keep this from getting out of hand, but I get it – it’s been zero fun, sir, to be on the wrong end of this Cougar juggernaut over its first two games.
CFN Game Preview, Prediction

12:00 ET Gametimes

What, exactly, about that offensive performance against Ole Miss would lead you to believe that Florida isn’t going to be an offensive powerhouse all year? South Carolina has talent. It has a defense. It has good enough passing game to screw you up late, but if you can get this at 17.5, you’re happy.
CFN Game Preview, Prediction
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

Is that really right? TCU has beaten Texas in four of the last five years? AND you’re getting 11.5 with the Horned Frogs? Texas is a much, much better team, and it might just bounce back from whatever that was against Texas Tech and rock, but this D once again isn’t tackling. Love the over on the 63, like never messing around with a trend – especially if you can get +12. That +340 on the money line isn’t too bad, either.
CFN Game Preview, Prediction
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

The Tennessee-Missouri line has been hovering around Vols -12.5. Ehhhhhh, that seems way rich for Tennessee to be giving away that much to anyone in the SEC. The Tigers are going to keep pressing for four quarters, even if they get down early.
CFN Game Preview, Prediction
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

I’m trying to love you, NC State. I’ve been in your corner all offseason that 2019 was just a blip, everything will flip back around, and then … yuck. The defense is awful, the offense is going to be inconsistent, and now you get a Pitt team that’s going to pay rent in your backfield. However, be careful, everyone. Pitt -14 is just about right for this.
CFN Game Preview, Prediction
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

Good luck trying to figure out East Carolina at Georgia State. The line is sort of irrelevant – it started at Panthers -6, got down to -1, and now is at -2. That’s probably right in what should be a close game, but don’t measure anything – like last week’s ECU loss – that happens against UCF the week before. This is as coin-flippy as it gets.
CFN Game Preview, Prediction
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

Arkansas State should be much more than three points better than Coastal Carolina, but that -3 line just feels like a tease. This is one of those moments when you go with the stronger team, and have a short memory if it doesn’t work out.
CFN Game Preview, Prediction
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

I have a bad habit of trying to make picks happen – at least once in a while. I’m trying to make this West Virginia team a thing, because it should be. It’s a home underdog, Baylor is probably being handed an extra two points because it played Kansas last week, and Neal Brown is too good a coach to let this Mountaineer thing slide for too much longer.
CFN Game Preview, Prediction
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

At the very least, UTSA has been fun. It’s 3-0, the offense is working, and the defense is … bad. UAB is coming off a crushing performance against South Alabama that’s being a bit blown up a bit in the lines. UTSA should be able to keep up enough to cover the 20.
CFN Game Preview, Prediction
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

If you’re that weird to be interested in Liberty hosting North Alabama …  check that. There’s nothing weird about going to the window. Of course you’re going Liberty -30.5. This team isn’t going to take it light and easy on anyone. It’s going to need to pour it on whenever it has a chance, and it’s going to run for 300 yards in this.

College Football Free Predictions, Previews Winners and Whiners: Week 5

[jwplayer PkCtjTd4-boEY74VG]

From Winners and Whiners

We’re heading to October and another strong slate, despite not having the Big 10 or Pac-12. The Big 10 will open on Week 8, but in Week 5, we’re going to take a look at three marquee games this Saturday. No. 7 Auburn meets No. 4 Georgia, No. 16 Oklahoma meets Iowa State on the road, and No. 13 Texas A&M at No. 2 Alabama.

*Auburn takes on Georgia and you have to wonder if J.T. Daniels will now play for the Bulldogs, now that he’s been cleared. They used redshirt freshman D’Wan Mathis and he was relieved by Stetson Bennett, who threw for 211 yards on 20-of-29. Georgia romped over Arkansas on the road 37-10, but there are still questions at quarterback. Auburn does not have those issues as Bo Nix is one of the best returning quarterbacks in the SEC. He has thrown 218 straight passes without an interception. They beat Kentucky last week 29-13 at home. Take the points here and go with Auburn.

*Oklahoma takes on Iowa State from Ames. The Sooners are coming off a shocking loss to Kansas State at home, 38-35 as 28-point favorite. It was a struggle for redshirt freshman Spencer Rattler, who threw for 387 yards with four TDs, but also had three picks. Iowa State is coming off a 37-34 road win over TCU last week. It wasn’t a pretty win as they allowed over 500 yards of offense. But they were more balanced offensive and running back Breece Hall had a fantastic game with 154 yards rushing and three TDs. These teams have played some very close games lately. The Cyclones have covered the last four. Still concerned about the Oklahoma defense and some of the players on their injury list. Take the 7 points and Iowa State at home.

*Texas A&M did not look good offensively in their 17-12 win over Vanderbilt last week at home as a 31.5-point favorite. The Aggies had three turnovers and eight penalties for 50 yards. They’ll have to play much better this week from Tuscaloosa. Alabama beat up on Missouri, 38-19 on the road last week, but didn’t cover the 28.5. Mac Jones threw for 249 yards and two scores, while Najee Harris ran for 98 yards and three scores to lead the Crimson Tide. The defense held Mizzou to just 69 yards on the ground. Alabama didn’t play a full game last week and won by 19. This week, they win by more at home and cover the 17.

The NFL returns for Week 4 on Sunday and we have some strong matchups. We still have some undefeated teams in Chicago, Kansas City, Pittsburgh, Tennessee, Seattle, Buffalo and Green Bay. We do have two undefeated squads going against each other in the Steelers against the Titans, New England travels to Kansas City and the Colts take on the Bears from Soldier Field.

*The Colts meet the undefeated Bears in an interconference matchup. The Colts have played much better since a 27-20 defeat at Jacksonville in the opener. They crushed the Vikings by 17 and the Jets by 29 in their last game. The defense has really stepped up lately, holding their last two opponents to a combined 18 points. They also had two pick sixes against the Jets to set a team record. Chicago brought in Nick Foles for Mitch Trubisky last week and they came back from being down 26-10 at Atlanta in the fourth quarter to win 30-26. Foles led them to three touchdowns in the final 6:20. Can he do it again this week against Indianapolis? The Colts are the better team and have the better quarterback. Lay the 2.5 points (or take the Colts in the first half).

*The Titans/Steelers game is expected to be played, but could be moved to Monday due to several Tennessee players testing positive. Fortunately for the Titans, the game is at home. They are 3-0, but they’ve won all three games by a combined six points. They are also 0-3 ATS in those games. Defense has to be a concern after they allowed 30 points in each of their last two games. QB Ryan Tannehill has been very good for Tennessee this season, considering teams are stacking the box. He’ll have to be even better against Pittsburgh, who is coming off a 28-21 home win over Houston. Ben Roethlisberger has 777 passing yards, seven TDs and just one pick in the first three games. The defense is number one against the run and they face Derrick Henry. Take the Steelers at home as a small fave.

*Can anybody beat the Chiefs? They were sensational on Monday night against the Ravens on the road, 34-20. That came after an average performance against the Chargers in a 23-20 win in overtime. But Patrick Mahomes picked apart a very good Ravens secondary and torched them for 385 yards and four TDs. They’ll face another good secondary when they meet New England at home. Bill Belichick’s squad is a quiet 2-1, but he has another dangerous team because Cam Newton has led the offense to a number one ranking in rushing in the NFL (178ypg). They’ll utilize the run and attempt to keep Mahomes off the field (unlike the Ravens). Take the points and the Patriots.

Now the college football season has flipped the switch.

It’s still strange, but the matchups are better, and the values are insane considering how many upsets and crazy outcomes there have been early on.

Here’s how the drill goes. Without looking, I take a guess on what the initial college football lines are going to be for Week 5. The real lines are added after to see if there might be anything that appears to be way off.

[jwplayer PkCtjTd4-boEY74VG]

We finally have a strong slate of college football games this weekend thanks to the SEC opening up their schedule. We’re going to take a look at three games this Saturday, including two in the Big 12 and one in the SEC. West Virginia travels to No. 15 Oklahoma State, No. 23 Kentucky takes on No. 9 Auburn and No. 8 Texas takes on Texas Tech on the road.

[lawrence-related id=519844]

*West Virginia crushed FCS opponent Eastern Kentucky as expected last week, but they’ll have a much tougher opponent this week. Oklahoma State struggled in their 16-7 win over Tulsa in their opener. QB Spencer Sanders went down with an ankle injury, which explains the offensive problems. He’s listed as questionable in this one, but was in a walking boot earlier this week. Going to take the points and go with West Virginia, who lost by seven at home to the Cowboys last season as a 7-point dog.

*Kentucky has a challenge this week against Bo Nix and the Auburn Tigers. Nix had a strong rookie season, but struggled against quality defenses. Kentucky has a quality defense and then some. They do have a question mark at quarterback and they’re hoping that Auburn transfer Joey Gatewood will be eligible. Even if he isn’t, Terry Wilson is competent enough to lead them to a win or at least a cover. Take the Wildcats and the hook.

[lawrence-related id=519836]

*Texas smoked the Red Raiders last season 49-24 at home giving 9.5. They looked impressive in their Sept. 12 matchup against UTEP, winning 59-3. Sam Ehlinger threw for 426 yards and five touchdowns to five different receivers.Texas Tech struggled in their 35-33 win over Houston Baptist on the same date. They were a 40-point favorite and their defense struggled. QB Alan Bowman was impressive with 430 yards and two TD passes, but that secondary allowed 572 passing yards. It’s a big number, but take the Longhorns on the road as Ehlinger throws for closer to 500 yards.

Below, be sure to check out all of our predictions on every game on the board in college.

College Football Betting Advice, Final Thoughts, Week 4

12:00 ET Gametimes

It’s the wrong way to look at games, but being contrarian has worked out well so far this season. Kansas State should get blown out by Oklahoma. It’s had COVID issues over this last week, it’s coming off a loss a few weeks ago against Arkansas State, and the secondary is in trouble. The 28-point line on the OU side is a wee bit rich, though, for a team that can control the ball like K-State can.
CFN Game Preview, Prediction

Don’t overthink the SEC games. Of course Ole Miss will be fired up for the Lane Kiffin opener against Florida. The Gator D, though, should be the difference to keep the Rebel offense down to make the Florida -13.5 doable . Beware – you’ll have to wait until the fourth quarter to get anywhere near comfortable.
CFN Game Preview, Prediction
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

Remembering that it’s the opener for all of the SEC teams, who’ll be ragged and who’ll do better if things get sloppy? It stinks that Kentucky lost a half a point, but covering the 7.5 against Auburn works since no one bogs things down like the Wildcats. If you’re into the money line, UK +250 isn’t bad.
CFN Game Preview, Prediction
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

Don’t think too hard – if at all – about the UCF-East Carolina game. We don’t know what ECU is yet, but UCF got its clunker game out of the way. The Knights played like hot garbage in the win over Georgia Tech, and the offense still blew up. 27 points are a ton to give up, but getting to 50 for this O is doable.
CFN Game Preview, Prediction
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

Money line people, here you go. Of course it’s icky and wrong to bring the pandemic into all of this, but if Louisiana is still going to get out there and play after losing several key players for this week, then it’s a moral imperative to like the idea of Georgia Southern +370. Teams tend to focus better in times of crisis – I do like the Ragin’ Cajuns – but the ML is the nice value idea.
CFN Game Preview, Prediction
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

People like to talk about things being overrated and underrated. Louisville seems like its properly rated. Pitt is a bit of a mystery still, but it’s been sharp, and the D line should own the Cardinal offensive front. Giving away three might seem like an obvious gift after the fact.
CFN Game Preview, Prediction
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

Syracuse can’t really be this bad, can it? North Carolina is good – it might be great. Pitt is good – it might be great. There’s a chance two things can be right at once. Syracuse might be struggling, and those two might be amazing. That’s a long-winded way of saying Georgia Tech is just okay, and the Orange getting eight at home is massive. The +250 money line play isn’t bad, either.
CFN Game Preview, Prediction
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

Stay away from Georgia State at Charlotte unless you really feel strongly. Panthers -3 is about right, especially with the way the ground game should work. Charlotte is a whole lot better, though, than it was against Appalachian State.
