Wisconsin basketball scales latest installation of NCAA NET rankings

Wisconsin basketball checked in at No. 25 in the latest installation of the NCAA Men’s Basketball NET Rankings on Saturday.

After sitting at No. 33 entering Friday’s contest against Iowa, Wisconsin leapfrogged several programs to claim the No. 25 spot in the list. Unlike ESPN BPI and KenPom, the NET ranking evaluates a program’s performance primarily based on the strength of its resume.

A significant aspect of the NET rankings is a team’s record in each quadrant. The NET features four quadrants formed based on game location and the opponent’s ranking, per the NCAA.

Here’s how those quadrants shake out:

  • Quadrant 1: Home 1-30, Neutral 1-50, Away 1-75
  • Quadrant 2: Home 31-75, Neutral 51-100, Away 76-135
  • Quadrant 3: Home 76-160, Neutral 101-200, Away 135-240
  • Quadrant 4: Home 161-353, Neutral 201-353, Away 241-353

For instance, if the Badgers defeated Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium and the Blue Devils held a 26 NET ranking, UW would receive a Quadrant 1 win. If Greg Gard’s group dropped a game to Minnesota at the Kohl Center and the Golden Gophers boasted a NET of 100, it would be considered a Quadrant 3 loss.

Through 14 games, the Badgers have collected two Quadrant 1 wins, three Quadrant 2 wins, one Quadrant 3 win and five Quadrant 4 wins.

Only Illinois (No. 5), Michigan (No. 11), Oregon (No. 15), UCLA (No. 14), Maryland (No. 18), Michigan State (No. 20) and Oregon (No. 23) are ranked ahead of Wisconsin in the most recent version of the NET.

The Badgers’ convincing 31-point win over Iowa certainly urged voters to make the adjustment. Of all 18 Big Ten squads, Wisconsin moved the most in either direction.

UW will be back on the hardwood for an important road matchup at Rutgers on Monday, Jan. 6.

Gators plummet in NET rankings after losing to Texas Southern

Florida debuted at No. 22 on the NCAA men’s basketball NET rankings, but a loss to Texas Southern has the Gators way down 24 hours later.

After being ranked No. 22 in the initial NET rankings Monday, a loss to the previously winless Texas Southern Tigers has Florida basketball down to No. 57.

The Gators were perfect in November, but December has been anything but kind to Mike White and company. Shaky shooting and early foul trouble proved to be too much to overcome for Florida against Oklahoma, but a repeat of the same issues (and then some) against 0-7 Texas Southern has Gator Nation slamming the panic button.

A Quadrant 4 loss can kill when it comes time for NCAA tournament selection and seeding, and the upcoming conference schedule isn’t looking like a walk in the park with the way this Gators team is playing.

White said that this “was not who this team is” after the loss, but the outcome undoes every bit of progress made in the first few weeks of the season. Even if Florida manages to dominate North Florida on Wednesday, the Gators don’t have a shot at a Quadrant 1 win until they host Alabama on Jan. 5.

Speaking of the Crimson Tide, ‘Bama sits at No. 14 but there are two more SEC teams ranked above it. Tennessee is just ahead at No. 12 and 8-0 LSU somewhat surprisingly has the No. 2 spot with just one Quadrant 1 win. Auburn is just behind Alabama at No. 15 and Kentucky is the next highest at No. 39.

Arkansas has the same record as LSU but is ranked No. 43 and Mississippi State squeaked into the Top 50 at No. 49. Texas A&M is the final SEC team ranked ahead of Florida at No. 56.

The good news is that Florida is far from the first team to be upset this year and there’s plenty of time to turn things around. The final rankings are the ones that matter, and now is the time to work out issues rather than during SEC play.

The National Collegiate Athletic Association’s first men’s basketball NET rankings have the Florida Gators among the top-25 teams on its list heading into the thick of the 2020-21 season.

The initial standings have UF at No. 22, holding a 5-1 overall record while remaining undefeated in the Southeastern Conference at 2-0. However, Florida is just 1-1 in Quad 1 matchups, while they have dominated the lowest two quadrants going 3-0 against Quad 3 and 1-0 against Quad 4.

Despite losing their star forward Keyontae Johnson, the Gators have managed to win its two games without him in a manner that inspires a great deal of confidence for this team moving forward. With Florida’s SEC schedule now in full swing, UF will be put to the test to see if they can run with the big dogs.

Speaking of the SEC, the conference has just four teams in the top 25, with the Tennessee Volunteers near the top at No. 3 while the Missouri Tigers sit on the edge of the top 10 at No. 10, the Gators at No. 22, and the LSU Tigers — who the Gators recently defeated at home — at No. 23.

Michigan State Basketball ranked No. 13 in latest NCAA NET Rankings

Despite recent losses, MSU is still ranked in the top-15 of the new NET rankings.

This has been a frustrating part of the Michigan State Men’s Basketball season, with recent losses to Michigan, Indiana, Penn State, and Wisconsin, but the Spartans are still looked at favorably in the NCAA NET rankings. In games through February 8th, which includes yesterday’s loss to U of M, MSU is ranked at No. 13, just one spot below their previous ranking at No. 12.

The NET rankings have replaced the RPI as a tool for the NCAA Men’s Basketball Selection Committee to use to help select the NCAA Tournament seeding and field. The fact that the NET still looks at MSU so favorably makes a lot of sense, given that it just made them a 4-seed in the first tournament preview of the year.

Michigan State will face yet another big road test as they travel to Champaign, Illinois to face off against Illinois in a battle of two teams that are right at the top of the Big Ten standings.
