2023 College Football Rankings 1-133: First Look

NC State Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Wolfpack miss from the ACC slate?

It’s not all that bad.

Yeah, NC State has to play Clemson, but that’s a home game coming off a midseason week off.

Yeah, it has to deal with Notre Dame in the ACC’s friends-with-benefits deal, but that’s at home, too.

Missing Boston College, Georgia Tech, and Syracuse isn’t a plus – those three are more than beatable this season by this Wolfpack team – but not having to deal with Florida State is massive. That, and missing Pitt is a huge help.

NC State Football Schedule What Really Matters

The road schedule is a dream.

There are five games away from Raleigh, but North Carolina has to make the trip over, and so do Clemson, Florida State, Miami, and Notre Dame.

Going to UConn isn’t anything to worry about. Virginia and Virginia Tech will be better, but they failed to go bowling last year. Duke is dangerous, but … it’s still Duke, not Clemson. Going to Wake Forest is dangerous, but … it’s Wake Forest, not Florida State.

Going at least 4-1 on the road isn’t asking for anything crazy.

NC State Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

There’s no blaming the schedule if this isn’t a huge season.

If NC State can take care of home, it’s not wrong to dream of going at least 10-2 if the team can come together fast.

No, the Wolfpack won’t beat Notre Dame, Clemson, Miami, and Florida State, but it can win at least two of those. And to keep hammering this home, those aren’t on the road.

Duke’s Mayo Bowl What Happened

A defensive slugfest broke out. NC State only managed four field goals, and Maryland came up with three. Taulia Tagovailoa found Octavian Smith for a 19-yard score in the second quarter, and the Terps never trailed the rest of the way.

– NC State had several chances, but it couldn’t break through. The defense held late and forced a punt, but with one final shot to pull out the win, the drive was cut short right away on a pick from Jakorian Bennett to seal the Maryland win.

Neither kicker missed. Maryland’s Chad Ryland hit from 42, 33, and with a 45-yarder with just under six minutes to play to push the lead to four. NC State’s Christopher Dunn made his four from 38, 19, 38, and 26 yards out.

– Rushing Yards: Maryland 76 on 41 carries (1.9 yards per carry) – NC State 27 on 18 carries (1.5 yards per carry)

– Time of Possession: Maryland 35:34 – NC State 24:26

Duke’s Mayo Bowl What It All Means

Maryland was able to win because of its … defense? The offense was missing most of its star receivers, there wasn’t anything happening with the running game on a regular basis, and the D kept NC State out of the end zone. Considering the rough November to close things out – going 1-3 – this was a huge way to end the season under Mike Locksley.

With eight wins, this was the best season for the program since going 9-4 in 2010, and it’s the second straight bowl win under Locksley. Maryland is now 7-4 in bowls since losing the Orange Bowl at the end of the 2001 season.

NC State couldn’t get over the hump. The defense kept the game alive, but the offense couldn’t provide any sort of a push. The momentum and fun of the win over North Carolina to end the regular season aren’t totally gone, but this was a disappointment considering how close the team was time and again to pull this off.

NC State used to be amazing in bowls – going 9-4 from 2000 to 2017 – but this loss makes it three in a row over the last five years. Even so, head coach Dave Doeren has won eight games or more in five of the last six seasons.

2022-2023 Bowl Schedule, Predictions

This fan chugged mayonnaise at the Duke’s Mayo Bowl, and college football Twitter couldn’t handle it

Grossssssss.

The Duke’s Mayo Bowl is a wild, absurd, delightful and gross college football tradition that’s filled with all things… well, mayonnaise. A slightly horrifying mayo mascot, fans eating mayo in the stands, the winning coach ultimately getting a mayo bath.

It’s a special bowl that brings out the extra weird in college football fans, and those who tuned into the bowl game Friday between Maryland and N.C. State were treated to that weirdness (and grossness) up close.

One Wolfpack fan took his Duke’s Mayo Bowl fandom to the next level with cameras capturing him chugging a bottle of mayo. Yep, just straight up pouring mayo in his mouth.

Grossssssss.

Obviously, college football fans loved this. They were also repulsed by it but still loved this moment nonetheless.

Other action around the ACC saw a top-25 battle, with NC State taking down Sam Hartman and Wake Forest and North Carolina barely squeaking by Virginia on the road.

In college football, anything can happen on any given Saturday, as we have seen this season. So, how did Week 10 shake things up in the ACC? Who rose in our and fell in our rankings?

Here’s a look at our ACC power rankings heading into 11:

Clemson and the ACC are big winners of the first College Football Playoff rankings

Clemson and the ACC came out of the first College Football Playoff rankings looking good.

Dabo Swinney and the Tigers are undefeated with an 8-0 (6-0 ACC) record and remain one of the only six unbeaten teams in the country.

Though the team is undefeated, many around the country don’t believe Clemson is one of the best teams in college football. However, the College Football Playoff Committee felt differently, ranking Clemson at No.4 in the first College Football Playoff rankings of the season.

This ranking surprised many with expectations that Michigan, who ranks No.4 in the Coaches and AP Polls, was expected to get the nod over Clemson, with others believing another undefeated team in TCU was worthy of the final spot in the top four. Instead, it was Clemson who has done enough so far for the committee to deem them a playoff team so far.

This ranking was a big win for not only Clemson but the ACC as a whole, as their top dog in Clemson is in a strong position while the rest of the conference is represented well in the rankings. According to Paul Myerberg of USA Today Sports, Clemson and the ACC are among the biggest winners of the first College Football Playoff rankings.

Here’s what Myerberg had to say about the team and the conference:

Clemson and the ACC

It wasn’t as bad for the ACC as believed heading into the rankings, beginning with the fact that Clemson came in ahead of Michigan to round out the top four. With the easiest remaining schedule of any of the top playoff contenders, the Tigers have to feel very positive about their chances of returning to the semifinals after a one-year absence. Clemson coming in at No. 4 is due to wins against three other ACC teams in the rankings: No. 20 Syracuse, No. 21 Wake Forest and No. 22 North Carolina State. (North Carolina was the fifth ACC representative at No. 17.) The committee respects the top third of the conference and how Clemson has risen to the top of the league.

The ACC is getting the credit they deserve as a conference is significant for the Tigers as they genuinely control their own fate. After seeing these first rankings, there is no reason to believe an undefeated Clemson team won’t make the College Football Playoff.

If the Tigers drop one game, however, things will get a lot more interesting, with Clemson the likelihood of not making the playoff increasing substantially. It is win and get in for Swinney and Clemson.

After an exciting Week 8, here’s our ACC power rankings heading into Week 9.

Dabo Swinney and No.5 Clemson are coming off a 27-21 home win over Syracuse, where the Tigers had to overcome a 17-point deficit in the fourth quarter. It wasn’t near the Tigers’ best football as DJ Uiagalelei took a seat for true freshman Cade Klubnik to give the team the spark they needed in the second half to pull it out.

There were some great games around the ACC in Week 8, while a handful of teams had their bye weeks. Duke beat down Miami on the road, while Louisville continued their bounce-back handling Pittsburgh.
