LeBron James’ frustration with the NBA’s COVID protocol, explained

LeBron’s frustration is understandable, but the league handled his false-positive test correctly.

LeBron James has been in and out of the Lakers’ lineup this season for a myriad of reasons with most of them having to do with injury.

But his latest absence was triggered by a positive COVID-19 test. On Monday, news broke that James tested positive and would miss “several games” due to his positive test. The NBA’s policy requires a mandatory 10-day absence from the team.

But by Friday, James was back in the lineup. Apparently, his initial test was a false positive. But he’d already missed a game for the Lakers when they were trying to catch a rhythm.

This totally explains why he tweeted this earlier this week on Wednesday.

James clearly was not happy with how all this was handled.

Kyrie Irving says he ‘just needed a pause.’ He should be celebrated for it.

Good for Kyrie.

After a two week hiatus away from the team, Kyrie Irving has finally rejoined the Brooklyn Nets.

He practiced on Tuesday and is expected to suit up against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday. We’re finally going to get a look at the new-look Nets with the best superstar trio in the NBA (along with Kevin Durant and newly acquired James Harden).

In the meantime, though, Irving talked a bit about his absence from the team. It was odd. He wasn’t injured, so it was unexpected. He just stepped away and there was very little explanation as to why. All we knew was that Irving was in touch with the Nets front office and head coach Steve Nash.

Irving opened up about it during his media availability Tuesday. Turns out, it seems, he just needed a break.

He said he talked with his teammates and is ready to move on.

Without getting into specifics, he also addressed the reasons for his absence. And, it seems, a lot of it has to do with things going on in the world outside of basketball.

“When things become overwhelming in life, you know, you just got to take a step back and realize what’s important. I’m not alone in this. And that’s just a big thing about also mental health, you know, just coming in and being balanced with yourself and then being able to perform. So, with everything going on in the world politically, socially, it’s hard to ignore. I want to make changes daily. You know, there are so many oppressed communities, so many things going on that are bigger than just a ball going into the rim. So it’s just the balance of it.”

That’s pretty insightful stuff from Irving there.

And, look, his absence was unquestionably weird. And the way he handled it wasn’t the best either. Breaking the NBA’s COVID-19 protocols and attending a party is obviously not the greatest thing to do.

But, at the same time, Irving is human. We all need breaks sometimes — especially when there are unprecedented things going on in the world. Different people are affected in different ways by things. If Irving needed to take a breather after all of the events over the last few weeks, that’s totally fine.

Obviously, Irving is a professional athlete. There’s plenty of incentive to play and earn all of his money here. But, instead, he chose his mental health (and forfeited $800,000 in game checks and was fined $50,000). And that’s a great thing, for both athletes and non-athletes alike. We should all make more room for mental breaks (as should our employers.)

Good on him for realizing he needed to take that breather. Let’s not assume Irving is “fixed” now; the world is still a stressful mess, for so many reasons, and mental healthy isn’t close to binary.  But at least now we can take some solace in knowing he’s doing his best to take care of himself, and look forward to watching him play once again.

Karl-Anthony Towns revealed he tested positive for COVID-19 and it’s absolutely heartbreaking

This is so sad.

It’s hard to even find the right words to say about what Karl-Anthony Towns has gone through over the last year.

He lost his mother, Jacqueline Cruz-Towns, to COVID-19 earlier this year in April after she dealt with the virus for a month. And, before the season started, Towns revealed that he also lost six other family members to the virus over the last year. That, alone, is heartbreaking. On Friday, he had more bad news. Towns revealed that he, himself, has tested positive for the virus.

Towns revealed his positive diagnosis via a statement released on Twitter and it was absolutely gut-wrenching.

“Prior to tonight’s game I received yet another awful call that I tested positive for COVID. I will immediately isolate and follow every protocol. I pray every day that this nightmare of a virus will subside and I beg everyone to continue to take it seirously by taking all of the necessary precautions.”

The last line was especially heartbreaking.

“To my niece and nephew, Jolani and Max, I promise you I will not end up in a box next to grandma and I will beat this.”

Man. It is absolutely infuriating that Towns has to go through this — especially after losing so much to this virus already.

Get well soon, KAT.

The details on the NBA’s new COVID-19 protocols

Here are all the details on the NBA’s new COVID-19 protocols they came up with on Tuesday.

COVID-19 cases have been on the rise around the NBA over the last few weeks and, as a result, three games have been postponed in the opening month with more likely to come.

Because of the league’s struggles with coronavirus, the NBA met with the Board of Governors on Tuesday afternoon to figure out the best way to go continue the season.

The league came up with some new COVID-19 protocols that they’re hoping will slow the spread of the virus around the league instead of pausing things altogether.

The NBA had previous protocols in place, but added measures on to try and prevent the spread. They’ve already released the new measures to the public along with explanations behind them.

Here’s a quick synopsis on the details.
