Lakers’ Frank Vogel congratulates Carmelo Anthony for latest scoring milestone

Los Angeles Lakers head coach Frank Vogel had high praise for Carmelo Anthony’s performance and hitting a new milestone.

During the Los Angeles Lakers’ win over the Memphis Grizzlies on Sunday, a milestone was reached by a longtime veteran,

Carmelo Anthony moved to No. 9 on the NBA’s all-time scoring list while dropping 28 points, passing Moses Malone.

He shot 10-of-15 overall and 6-of-8 from deep, so it was a fitting way for Anthony to ascend a spot.

After the game, head coach Frank Vogel congratulated Anthony for the accomplishment.

“He was outstanding tonight, and congrats to Melo. I mean, ninth all-time, that’s unbelievable,” Vogel said. “Carmelo Anthony was awesome tonight.”

Vogel continued about the effect the 37-year-old veteran has had on the squad.

“He didn’t crawl up to that milestone; he blew the doors off of it. I’m super happy for him,” Vogel said. “He’s been a great culture fit for our group and, obviously, really playing at a high level on the floor. He has a lot left in the tank, and he’s really going to help us this year.”

The moment L.A. signed Anthony in the summer, his role was clear: make shots. Anthony evolved into a 40% 3-point shooter during his two-year stint with the Portland Trail Blazers, and the Lakers desperately need that production after having a poor shooting team last year.

Anthony will not consistently hit 28 points every game, but if he can maintain a respectable clip from deep, there will be minutes for him.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar explains how he’d feel if LeBron James surpassed him on all-time scoring list

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is ready to support Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James if James passes him on the all-time scoring list.

With LeBron James’ longevity, it is possible he could break one more record before calling it a career.

The 36-year-old star is heading into his 19th season in the league, and though he’s claimed several MVP awards, rings, All-Star accolades and many more, one of the grandest records one can hold is the top spot on the NBA’s all-time scoring list.

Currently sitting on that throne is Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who played 20 seasons in the league from 1969-70 to 1988-89; Fourteen of those seasons came with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Abdul-Jabbar holds the record with 38,387 total points over the span of his career, while James is third at 35,367 points.

If James can play at least until he hits 40 years old, which he recently said he wants to play at least four to seven more seasons with the Lakers, there is a real possibility he can surpass Abdul-Jabbar for that record.

In an interview with NBA insider Marc Stein, Abdul-Jabbar explained his thoughts on James possibly claiming that top spot:

I’m excited to see it happen. I don’t see records as personal accomplishments, but more as human achievements. If one person can do something that’s never been done, that means we all have a shot at doing it. It’s a source of hope and inspiration. Roger Bannister broke the four-minute mile back in 1954. Since then, not only have 1,400 runners beaten that time, but the new record is 17 seconds less. We all win when a record is broken and if LeBron breaks mine, I will be right there to cheer him on.

The important component for James is staying healthy. He’s had injuries derail two of his last three seasons, which has set him back from achieving the top spot a little faster.

If James can string together multiple healthy seasons while maintaining the high level of play the league is accustomed to, then it’s certainly not impossible for James to yet again put himself in the record books.

Kobe Bryant to LeBron James: ‘Continue to move the game forward’

Kobe Bryant offered his congratulations and admiration to fellow Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James on passing him in scoring.

It was a long time coming and after LeBron James finally passed Kobe Bryant to be No. 3 on the NBA’s All-Time scoring list on Saturday night in Kobe’s hometown of Philadelphia, Bryant continued to be as gracious as he was in the lead up to LeBron passing him as James now only has Karl Malone and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar ahead of him.

It wasn’t a perfect night for LeBron and the Lakers as they lost to the Sixers on Saturday night, unable to overcome a terrible start. They had a brief comeback attempt that had them alive in the fourth quarter but they eventually lost by 17. Nevertheless, Bryant made sure to honor LeBron passing him multiple times.

One of the greatest what-ifs in the history of the league is what would have it been like had Kobe and LeBron ever played against each other in the Finals. It’s something LeBron still thinks about but with the help of hindsight, it makes it easier for Kobe fans to accept the latest milestone. In theory, at least.

LeBron James can pass Kobe Bryant on the all-time scoring list with 18 points tonight

LeBron James can pass Kobe Bryant on the all-time scoring list with 18 points in Philadelphia tonight against the 76ers.

The son of Joe “Jellybean” Bryant first broke onto the national basketball stage as a star prodigy for Lower Merion High School just outside of Philadelphia. Tonight, LeBron James can move past the all-time NBA scoring mark set by Kobe Bryant with 18 points in his hometown. LeBron enters tonight’s matchup in Philly averaging 25.2 per contest and has scored at least 13 in every game this season.

Kobe currently occupies the No. 3 spot on the NBA’s all-time scoring list  with 33,643 points. When James meets Ben Simmons and the 76ers tonight on ESPN he will step onto the floor 17 points behind at 33,626. Only Karl Malone and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar have scored more in their NBA careers than Bryant and James.

Throughout their professional careers, Bryant and James have formed a bond that was further developed by their time together on Team USA in 2008. Both breaking into the league from high school, LeBron has sought Kobe’s guidance and advice at times on how to manage expectations as a young player in the league. James spoke with the Los Angeles Times about how he would feel if he passed Bryant on the all-time scoring list tonight.

“Things have happened organically because I just go about my business,” James said. “I don’t think about it going into it saying, ‘OK, this is what I got to do. This is how many points I need, this is how many assists I need.’ When it happens, it happens. If it happens.

And, so, I don’t know how I’m going to feel when it happens. But it’s a pretty cool thing, you’re just linked with one of the greatest of all time.”

The Sixers will be without Joel Embiid when they meet LeBron, Anthony Davis and the Lakers tonight in Philly. At 29-17, they currently occupy the No. 6 seed in the East which is far short of preseason expectations. Regardless, the Lakers will need a solid effort collectively on Simmons if they hope to escape with their 37th win of the season.
