LeBron James: ‘You could feel’ Kobe Bryant’s presence at All-Star Game

The Los Angeles Lakers star said that he felt the legendary Laker’s presence from the very beginning of the All-Star Game on Sunday.

LeBron James and Team LeBron capped off a beautiful All-Star Weekend in Chicago on Sunday night with 157-155 win over Team Giannis in a very intense untimed fourth quarter. As part of the weekend’s many tributes to Kobe Bryant, the All-Star Game featured an adaptive version of the Elam Ending, adding 24 points to the leading team’s score after three quarters to have a target score. In addition to the special ending in Kobe’s honor, Team Giannis wore No. 24 and Team LeBron wore No. 2, in honor of Kobe’s daughter Gigi. With all of those factors, it was impossible to miss Kobe’s presence in the building, according to LeBron.

James has said it a few times before but the NBA’s remembrance of Kobe will continue beyond this weekend. With Lakers fans spread all over the country, the honoring of Kobe Bryant will follow the Lakers all season long to every arena they go to. Last night was another chapter in that process.

Anthony Davis says he intentionally missed free throw to ratchet up drama at end of All-Star game

The Brow with the drama.

Anthony Davis added to the already-high drama of the 2020 All-Star game, which used the so-called “Elam ending” to deliver a thrilling finale in which Team LeBron won on a free throw from The Brow that got his squad to the pre-determined 157 points needed to claim victory.

Davis (a Chicago native playing in his hometown) said in the postgame interview that he told his teammates he was going to miss his first free throw on purpose before — hopefully — hitting the second one to clinch the win. Although the fact that the game ended on a free throw, it was still an extremely dramatic end to a game that normally doesn’t provide those kind of thrills.

In hindsight, it worked spectacularly. But what if it backfired? Lucky for Davis — who’s shooting a career-high 85.3 percent from the line — that didn’t happen.

Giannis Antetokounmpo rips James Harden for a second time after All-Star game

Do these two have beef?

Are we all missing something or do Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo and Houston Rockets’ guard James Harden have beef?

After Team Giannis defeated Team LeBron in a thrilling 157-155 win at the 2020 All-Star game, Antetokounmpo explained what his team’s strategy was late in the contest: “Offensively, we were just trying to find whoever James Harden was guarding. That’s who we thought we had an opportunity to score on.”

Now, look: that could be downright serious, although Harden’s defense has been much improved in recent years. Team LeBron had some of the game’s best defenders on the court, so Harden might have been the best option.

But Harden played solidly on the defensive end, so … what gives?

I keep going back to what the Greek Freak said during the All-Star selection show, when he said he “wanted somebody that’s going to pass the ball” and passed up on choosing Harden, instead going with Kemba Walker:

Is there beef here we don’t know about? Hmmm.

Kawhi Leonard’s dance moves have a lot of meme potential

Kawhi Leonard’s dance moves only add to his meme legend.

Kawhi Leonard tried to tell us he was a fun guy at the start of last season and, my goodness, we should’ve listened.

Not only has Leonard been the absolute pinnacle of basketball excellence for the last year, he’s also been a bottomless well of meme content. Everything from “WHAT IT DO BAYBEEEE” all the way down to the robotic laugh programmed in to his wiring, he’s given us nothing but laughs.

On Saturday ahead of the All-Star game he added to that list. When he was introduced during an All-Star event, they had Leonard walk out to Nipsey Hussle’s “Last Time that I checked” joint. Of course, you know he had to give us a little bit of that West Coast two step.

MY GOODNESS, y’all. If you thought Kawhi was a robot before? You’ve been vindicated. Here’s your proof right here. My man is on beat but he’s moving like somebody’s grandpa. Somebody put some WD-40 on them creaky joints.

In all seriousness, though, this is probably just something slight from Leonard. Hopefully, we see the full bag on Sunday night when it’s really time to shine.

LeBron spoke about reading Sports Illustrated, newspapers as a child

The Los Angeles Lakers star was asked about his reading habits as a youngster and he cited reading newspapers and Sports Illustrated.

You never know what might get asked at All-Star Media Day. The topics, more than at any other time in NBA media settings, can vary wildly. But sometimes that unpredictability can lead to poignant or even educational moments that can have a greater impact than your typical questions at this juncture of the season. One of those great, unexpected moments came during LeBron James’ media session on Saturday.

James was asked about some of his reading habits as a kid and he told the gathered media that he truly loved reading the sports section and Sports Illustrated, “not just the pictures,” when he was young.

Among the many things that James is known for, his constant state of curiosity about the world is one that rarely gets as much attention as the others. Perhaps it’s that state of curiosity is also why Anthony Davis recently likened LeBron, who recently turned 35, to “a big kid.”

Anthony Davis heckles LeBron at Media Day: ‘Hey LeBron, I love you!’

The Los Angeles Lakers stars are making the most of a special weekend where they will be at center stage.

Even for the biggest stars involved at the NBA All-Star Game, the All-Star Weekend is a moment to truly be a fan of the game. The history of the game and all of the old faces from the league’s past bring up those feelings of nostalgia, but also of an appreciation of the current crop of All-Stars. Anthony Davis did a little bit of both at the All-Star media day festivities as he became a fanboy for a brief moment of his teammate, LeBron James.

After being introduced as “Chicago’s own,” the Windy City’s native son decided to holler at LeBron and just let him know that he loved him.

The Lakers team chemistry has been one of their biggest strengths all season long and that all starts with their two stars sharing a bond that is rare among the league’s star duos. Both of them usually hang around for the other to finish their media responsibilities and have worked together to share the scoring load for the Lakers all season, powering them to a 41-12 record that leads the Western Conference.

Team LeBron favored by 5 in All-Star Game, AD favorite for MVP

The squad featuring both players of the Los Angeles Lakers and the coaching staff is favored by five points for Sunday’s All-Star Game.

The All-Star Weekend has finally arrived, as things will be getting underway later this evening in Chicago, starting with the Celebrity All-Star Game and the Rising Stars Game later on this evening. While there is some excitement surrounding All-Star Saturday night and the dunk contest, the main event comes on Sunday as Team LeBron will look to win for the third straight season.

According to the folks at BetOnline, Team LeBron is a 5-point favorite for Sunday while Anthony Davis is a 4/1 favorite to win All-Star MVP, followed closely by LeBron at 9/2. LeBron was the All-Star MVP at the 2018 All-Star Game in Los Angeles.

All-Star Game MVP

Anthony Davis                          4/1

LeBron James                           9/2

Giannis Antetokounmpo            5/1

James Harden                           6/1

Luka Doncic                             9/1

Trae Young                               10/1

Kawhi Leonard                          14/1

Joel Embiid                               18/1

Jimmy Butler                             20/1

Kemba Walker                           20/1

Pascal Siakam                          20/1

Russell Westbrook                    20/1

Devin Booker                            25/1

Jayson Tatum                            25/1

Ben Simmons                           33/1

The folks at BetOnline also have the over-under set at 300.5 points, which seems like a lot, but teams have come close to scoring almost 200 points over the past few seasons. However, this season’s new format, where each quarter will represent an individual win, could change the way scoring goes as teams may be more incentivized to play defense.

Snack Review: Trying out Anthony Davis’ signature Ruffles chips

The Los Angeles Lakers star created his own flavor of Ruffles. So, Erik decided to give up his taste buds for science, and content.

The All-Star Weekend is finally here, except for the four teams that have to play tonight. But we can finally take a break from the daily grind of the season and take stock of what has happened. The Los Angeles Lakers are 41-12, are No. 2 in offense and No. 5 in defense, LeBron James is leading the league in assists while Anthony Davis leads the Lakers in scoring and now has his own signature potato chip.

Yes, in celebration of not having to be serious for a minute, we are going to focus on an accomplishment from Davis that has gotten significantly less attention than his scoring and his shot-blocking. His potato chips, the new “Ruffles Lime & Jalapeño By Anthony Davis,” are incredibly bizarre! And I mean that in a good way, kind of like the way Davis can contort his Super Stretch arms around several defenders for a dunk.

Let’s start with some of my bonafides in the chip review game. I grew up in Salem, Oregon, home of Kettle Chips and also neighbor to the legendary Tim’s Cascade Chips to the north. While many of you may now see Jalapeño Kettle Chips in your stores nationwide, a true Chip Historian like myself is here to let you know they totally ripped that off from Tim’s. I take no pleasure in reporting this. But the thing about chips, food in general and even innovation in a very basic sense, is every idea has been stolen. I’m sure Tim’s ripped off a couple of Kettle Chips recipes. But that’s beside the point, innovation is always taking from something you’ve seen before and adding your own flair to it. This is what Anthony Davis did, mixing classic Jalapeño potato chips with a Tostitos “Hint of Lime” inspiration.

“When you’re different from everyone else, you can choose to hide it, or you can choose to own it. You should.” — Anthony Davis, on the back of his signature Ruffles.

Have you ever been to a Pho restaurant? Pho, for those who are unaware, is an incredible Vietnamese beef noodle soup. It’s great for hangovers and cleaning the hell out of your sinuses. I bring this up not because the chips reminded me so much of the soup, but because they reminded me of the plate of garnishes that always accompanies the soup. Thai basil, freshly sliced chiles and freshly cut lime. As soon as I opened the bag and ate a couple of handfuls of the chips, that was the immediate vision I saw. I immediately felt like I was at Pho Oregon or one of the many great Pho places I go to where I live now. It had that blast of lime flavor in the front and the Jalapeño bite in the back, which if you don’t like spicy stuff, you probably just gotta avoid.

Does Anthony Davis like Pho? Is he a big Pho guy? I know he wouldn’t have trouble finding it if he does, but I do wish to know what the true inspiration was to Davis. But he already talked about it in a press release and he probably won’t again. Who knows, but I can’t dissuade someone for thinking about, what if we put jalapeño and lime together because that is one of the classic combinations in the world of cooking, not just with Vietnamese pho because I said it does.

It’s also not quite just Lime & Jalapeño as they added a little bit of buttermilk and sour cream, as well as garlic powder and “herbs,” which is why I got some of that herby aroma that I associate with pho.

With all of that being said, I don’t have much more to say on this front. They are chips that, if offered to me, I would eat again. And while they aren’t going to be my first choice the next time I’m looking for a chip, potato or otherwise to snack on, I can guarantee that the next bag of chips I get won’t remind me of my favorite hangover soup. That alone is worth giving props to Davis for. Bravo Anthony, you did own it.

Phoenix’s Devin Booker to replace Damian Lillard on Team LeBron

Booker will join the team of the Los Angeles Lakers star after Lillard suffered a groin strain on Wednesday night against Memphis.

Although the Los Angeles Lakers season is now officially on hold until next week when they return to their regular season schedule, LeBron James, Anthony Davis and the Lakers coaching staff in charge of Team LeBron will now have to account for another player joining their team due to injury. Portland’s Damian Lillard, who was LeBron’s first pick of the reserves, is out for Sunday’s game and the 3-point shootout, will be replaced in the shootout and on Team LeBron by Phoenix Suns guard Devin Booker.

It is Booker’s first All-Star selection and he will have an opportunity to take home his second 3-point shootout trophy. According to the NBA, an injury replacement is usually done with a player from the same conference. Given that Booker and Lillard both play in the West, Adam Silver went with Booker, who has been close several times but has yet to make it.

Booker is averaging 26.4 points, 6.3 assists, and 4.2 rebounds while posting career highs in field goal percentage (49.6) and free throw percentage (92.0).

Lillard suffered a groin strain in the fourth quarter of last night’s game against the Memphis Grizzlies. Lillard was selected as an All-Star for the fifth time in his career this season. Lillard, however, is still expected to perform as his musical alias Dame D.O.L.L.A. at the All-Star Saturday night festivities.

LeBron James chose All-Star team to honor Gigi Bryant because of his daughter Zhuri

The Los Angeles Lakers star was given the choice for his All-Star team to wear No. 2 or to wear No. 24 in this month’s All-Star Game.

We are still just only starting to begin to see the ways the Los Angeles Lakers and the basketball world are honoring the memory of Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gigi, and seven others in a helicopter crash eight days ago. One of the biggest events on the basketball calendar will also be the site of tributes to Bryant, with both teams in the NBA All-Star Game wearing numbers to honor Kobe and Gigi.

The NBA announced last week that Team LeBron will wear No. 2, the number that Gigi wore while playing for her Mamba Academy Team, while Team Giannis will wear No. 24 in the game. James was asked about why he chose to wear No. 2 on Monday and he said the choice was inspired by his own daughter Zhuri, according to Tania Ganguli of the Los Angeles Times.

James has tried to look for ways to honor Zhuri and honor women even more in recent years. Last year he released a special version of his Nike signature shoe exclusively for women, the Nike LeBron 16 Harlem Fashion Row. He said that his daughter was a major inspiration for that choice as well.
