Celtics Lab 224: Assessing Boston’s start to ’23-24 season, NBA 2k official season sim with Ronnie 2k, Yossi Gozlan

What did we take from the first game of Boston’s season? What can the NBA 2k simulation underscore about what we saw on Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden vs. the Knicks?

The Boston Celtics just beat the New York Knicks to kick off their 2023-24 campaign for an auspicious start of their pursuit of an NBA-record 18th title, and if their campaign ends anything like the official season simulation by the folks over at NBA 2k, Celtics fans will finally get back on top to pass their rival Los Angeles Lakers as the team with the most championships won.

What did we take from the first game of Boston’s season? What can the NBA 2k simulation underscore about what we saw on Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden vs. the Knicks? The folks at the CLNS Media “Celtics Lab” podcast put together a rapid reaction to the real-life road win to start the 2023-24 season with HoopsHype’s Yossi Gozlan, then interviewed NBA 2k brand ambassador Ronnie 2k about how Boston won it all in the digital version of the season.

Opening high school esports 2023 rankings: Top ‘NBA 2K24’ players in each state/region

The top players in each state/region for the 2023 “NBA 2K24” regular season.

The high school esports schedule has kicked off for the 2023 Fall season, with the competitive gaming on the PlayVS platform—officially recognized by the NFHS Network and state associations— highlighting teams and solos across the country.

And with that comes Year 2 of the USA TODAY High School Sports and PlayVS rankings, which takes a look at the best of the best in “Madden NFL 24,” “NBA 2K24,” “Rocket League,” “League of Legends,” and “Hearthstone.”

After three weeks of play, here are the top “NBA 2K24” regular-season teams in each state/region.

NBA 2K24 launches futuristic Season 2 with Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama

NBA 2K24 is launching a futuristic Season 2 with Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama.

Is San Antonio Spurs big man Victor Wembanyama the future of the NBA? The makers of the hit video game NBA 2K seem to think. They are tapping the rookie to headline Season 2 of NBA 2K24. Specifically, they believe Wembanyama is the perfect ambassador to a futuristic content pack.

“An alien life force has been detected in the NBA,” 2K Sports said in a release about the update. “And it’s touched down in San Antonio; he goes by the name of Victor Wembanyama. The only explanation for the newcomer’s massive frame, freakishly good handles, and unguardable jumpshot is that he’s from the future, where society has figured out how to create the prototypical basketball player, meaning the future has arrivedin Season 2 of NBA 2K24”

Wembanyama has leaned into his “alien” nickname since LeBron James spoke about the French phenom prior to joining the NBA. It’s a worthy theme for a packed Season 2 of 2K24.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander lists his all-time starting lineup

What are your thoughts on SGA’s all-time starting lineup?

Debating legacies and being asked to name the greatest players ever is inherently a subjective topic that’ll guarantee long and emotional conversations in the aftermath.

No matter who is listed, there will always be pushback as the opinionated topics don’t have any definitive answers.

In a video with NBA 2K, Oklahoma City Thunder franchise guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander tackled this issue when he was asked to name his all-time starting lineup.

The 25-year-old listed off his starting five in the short clip:

  • Allen Iverson
  • Kobe Bryant
  • Michael Jordan
  • Kevin Durant
  • Shaquille O’Neal

This is a pretty unique take by Gilgeous-Alexander. The most notable absence is LeBron James, who is on the Los Angeles Lakers. The only active player in Gilgeous-Alexander’s five is Durant, who spent the first nine seasons of his career with the Thunder.

The least surprising inclusion in Gilgeous-Alexander’s all-time starting five is Bryant, who he famously said is like MJ but “on steroids.” Considering his age, Gilgeous-Alexander likely grew up watching Bryant’s prime with the Lakers.

We used NBA 2K24 to simulate the entire 2023-24 season for the Boston Celtics. The results were intriguing.

The start of the 2023-24 NBA regular season is still a few weeks away, meaning eager fans of the Boston Celtics will need to wait a bit longer to see this new-look team take the floor. For the impatient, however, there is an alternative.

The hit video game franchise NBA 2K allows players the ability to take control of an entire team with remarkable depth. This means the chance to play a single tilt, a full season, or even use the game’s powerful simulation platform to look into the future and see what the basketball gods might have in store for the coming season.

Having decided that patience is for the birds, I decided to fire up my Xbox and simulate the entire 2023-24 Boston Celtics season on NBA 2K24. This is what went down.

NBA 2K24 is out now, and it’s already one of the worst-rated games on Steam thanks to player dissatisfaction over the sports game’s microtransactions and  PC version. After four days and nearly 3,000 reviews, NBA 2K24 on Steam has an “Overwhelmingly Negative” tag and a score ranking that puts it just behind Overwatch 2 as the second worst-rated Steam game ever.

NBA 2K24’s microtransactions are more present than ever, thanks to a market redesign that let you purchase nearly any MyTeam card you want. A common thread of complaints is that the new system makes NBA 2K24 “pay-to-win” in its online multiplayer game modes, since players can purchase as many high-level cards as they want, so long as they can afford it.

Another recurring theme is anger over NBA 2K24’s presentation on PC. The PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions take advantage of new technology that 2K and Visual Concepts said would improve animations. The PC version does not, though 2K never said why. Several Steam users reported recurring bugs and errors, including some that they say carried over from NBA 2K23, which led to accusations that 2K and Visual Concepts “copied and pasted” content between the two games.

Confusion over NBA 2K24’s crossplay also pops up frequently in Steam reviews. It supports crossplay on current-gen platforms – but not in all of them, and some players assumed every mode featured crossplay.

2K and Visual Concepts haven’t said whether they plan on introducing next-gen upgrades in a future update.
