UFC Fight Night 224 post-event facts: Multiple perfect records ruined in London

Check out all the facts and figures from UFC Fight Night 224, which saw several fighters suffer their first career or octagon defeat.

The UFC made its 15th stop in London on Saturday with UFC Fight Night 224, which went down at The O2. It was the longest event of the year so far.

Many of the 15 fights on the docket went to decisions, but one man who didn’t need the judges was [autotag]Tom Aspinall[/autotag] (13-3 MMA, 6-1 UFC), who effortlessly ran through [autotag]Marcin Tybura[/autotag] (24-8 MMA, 11-7 UFC) for a first-round TKO in his return from a lengthy injury layoff.

Andre Fili on Nathaniel Wood loss at UFC Fight Night 224: ‘I thought I won. Judges didn’t. F*ck’ em’

Andre Fili thinks he was robbed by the judges against England’s Nathaniel Wood at UFC Fight Night 224 in London.

[autotag]Andre Fili[/autotag] thinks he was robbed by the judges at UFC Fight Night 224.

Fili (22-10 MMA, 10-9 UFC) lost a close unanimous decision to London’s own [autotag]Nathaniel Wood[/autotag] (20-5 MMA, 7-2 UFC) in this past Saturday’s main card at The O2.

Fili stumbled Wood with a left just 20 seconds into the fight, but was dropped with a big right a few moments later in what was a back-and-forth round. Fili was able to stun Wood again in Round 2, connecting with a left, followed by a flurry of knees which sent him to the canvas. The Team Alpha Male fighter thought he did enough to win the fight, but all three judges awarded Wood Rounds 1 and 3.

“I thought I Won. Judges didn’t. F*ck’ em. Colonizers can never keep a Polynesian boy down. Congrats to my opponent- fun fight. Onward & Upward. Outcasts & Underdogs. O&U Forever. I Love You All.”

Fili’s comments weren’t received well by the fans, but “Touchy” says his words were simply tongue in cheek.

“If me saying “colonizer” offends you, learn to take a f*cking joke. Or keep being a lame. Either way, thanks for watching.”

With the setback, Fili has one win in his past five outings – a split decision over Bill Algeo which came last September.

UFC Fight Night 224 results: Nathaniel Wood overcomes adversity, defeats Andre Fili in turbulent brawl

In a wild back-and-forth brawl that saw both men nearly finished, Nathaniel Wood emerged the victor in London.

Momentum swung back and forth in the UFC Fight Night 224 featured bout Saturday at The O2 in London.

In a featherweight bout, [autotag]Nathaniel Wood[/autotag] (20-5 MMA, 7-2 UFC) defeated [autotag]Andre Fili[/autotag] (22-10 MMA, 10-9 UFC) by unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28) in a thrilling three-round bout.

Both fighters were stunned and nearly finished during the fight. Wood was first to land a significant flurry when he floored Fili to the canvas and pounded away with punches. Many of Wood’s punches hit Fili’s arms. All the while, Fili told referee Marc Goddard to stand back.

In Round 2, it was Fili’s turn to unload. He landed a violent combination of a left hand and Thai knees that put Wood down. Fili hopped on Wood’s back and sought a submission. Wood wiggled Fili off and worked for a submission of his own.

The final round was less frantic and more technical. Fili and Wood both landed hard shots. While it was a closely contested final round, the judges all agreed Wood had done enough.

Wood, 29, moves to 3-0 since he moved up to featherweight in 2022. In September, he defeated Charles Jourdain by unanimous decision. Fili falls to 1-3 with one no contest in his most recent five bouts.

Records: Wood (19-5-0) | Fili (22-9-0)

Wood takes the walk looking for a 3rd consecutive victory. He has topped Charles Jourdain and Charles Rosa in the past 2 fights, both via unanimous decision. Each of his last 4 outings has gone the distance, and he is 3-1 via unanimous decision during the span.

Wood’s last stoppage came in a 3rd round KO/TKO loss to John Dodson in February 2020. His last win inside the distance was a submission victory over Jose Quinonez in March 2019.

Fili bounced back with a split-decision victory over Bill Alego in September after suffering a 41-second knockout loss to Joanderson Brito in April 2022. He has gone the distance in 4 of his past 6 bouts and 10 of the previous 13 outings.

UFC Fight Night 224: Wood vs. Fili odds

Provided by BetMGM Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated at 6:56 a.m. ET.

  • Fight result (2-way line): Wood -225 (bet $225 to win $100) | Fili +175 (bet $100 to win $175)
  • Will the fight go the distance? (Yes -200 | No +145)

UFC Fight Night 224: Wood vs. Fili picks and predictions

Fight result (2-way line or moneyline)

This is a solid venue for the Englishman Wood (-225) as he fights on his home soil. However, it isn’t a great idea to lay more than 2 times your potential return. In addition, Fili (+175) is quite dangerous, as he holds a 5-inch reach advantage and will be able to keep Wood at a distance while picking and choosing his spots to get close to the Briton.

I still expect Wood to win, but look for METHOD OF VICTORY 7-WAY: WOOD BY DECISION (+100) at even money to be the best play on the board.

Over/Under (O/U)

Yes (-200): Will the fight go the distance? is just a little too expensive for my liking as you have to lay twice your potential return, and that’s just too much risk and not enough reward, even if both of these fights have a penchant for having their bouts decided by the judges more often than not.

AVOID, and focus on the method of victory instead.

Nathaniel Wood breaks down that fight week hotel run-in with Lerone Murphy at UFC London

Nathaniel Wood has a solid task on his hands Saturday, but the UFC knew what it was doing putting him on the same card as Lerone Murphy.

LONDON – [autotag]Nathaniel Wood[/autotag] has a solid task on his hands Saturday, but the UFC may have known what it was doing putting him on the same card as Lerone Murphy.

Wood and Murphy had a run-in at the host hotel early in fight week for UFC Fight Night 224 in London. The featherweights just aren’t fighting each other … yet. The two were booked for UFC 286 in March, but Wood had to pull out after a freak leg injury a handful of weeks out.

There may be enough heat now to warrant booking them after this week.

“If I’m honest, that, you know, I think the social media said it was heated,” Wood said at Thursday’s media day in London. “That wasn’t heated. That was really calm from me. We just had a few words – a little bit of a conversation, if anything, or maybe like a heated debate. I guess we still just disagree, but it might just be one of those where we’re just going to have to agree to disagree and move on, because nothing really went anywhere with that conversation.”

But on social media, Wood admitted things were a bit different after Murphy took something Wood said about putting on a “masterclass” against him to offense.

“It started from 0, ended up at 100, and I guess, what do you do with that? I said things to him that are very offensive to him. He said things to me that are very offensive. He said things to me that people were telling me I could go and speak to lawyers about. I’m not, obviously, going to do that, but I think it just got over-escalated. I think it kind of started from nothing, and I think deep down he knows that, as well.

“I wish him all the best. If we end up fighting, great. I’m going to try and knock him out whether we’re friends or whether we’re not. But I’m not losing any sleep over it, you know, so I wish him all the best this Saturday. Hopefully he gets the win, I get my win, and if we can match up in the future and fight, then so be it.”

Saturday, Wood (19-5 MMA, 6-2 UFC) takes on Andre Fili (22-9 MMA, 10-8 UFC) in a featured bout on the main card just a few fights after Murphy (12-0-1 MMA, 4-0-1 UFC) opens the main card against Josh Culibao (11-1-1 MMA, 3-1-1 UFC).

‘You pulled out, bro’: Watch Lerone Murphy, Nathaniel Wood argue in UFC London hotel lobby

It appears UFC featherweights Lerone Murphy and Nathaniel Wood are yet to hash things out.

It appears UFC featherweights [autotag]Lerone Murphy[/autotag] and [autotag]Nathaniel Wood[/autotag] are yet to hash things out.

Murphy (12-0-1 MMA, 4-0-1 UFC) and Wood (19-5 MMA, 6-2 UFC) were scheduled to meet at UFC 286 this past March, but a freak accident caused an injury that forced Wood to withdraw. Murphy faced newcomer Gabriel Santos instead, edging him out by split decision.

Both Murphy and Wood have been booked for Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 224 card in London – but not against each other. That didn’t stop them from bickering when they had a run-in at the hotel lobby as Murphy explained to Wood why he wasn’t happy with him.

Looking to remain unbeaten in his professional MMA career, Murphy meets Josh Culibao (11-1-1 MMA, 3-1-1 UFC) in the ESPN+ main card opener at The O2 in London.

Meanwhile, Wood takes on Andre Fili (22-9 MMA, 10-8 UFC) in the featured main card bout. “The Prospect” is 2-0 since moving up to 145 pounds, scoring back-to-back unanimous decision wins over Charles Rosa and Charles Jourdain.
