Nate Landwehr: Wild UFC on ESPN 41 win over David Onama ‘was a great time’

Nate Landwehr had a blast during his win over David Onama, which was a brutal and frenetic Fight of the Year contender at UFC San Diego.

[autotag]Nate Landwehr[/autotag] stole the show this past Saturday at UFC on ESPN 41.

The UFC featherweight put himself on the map with his gutsy, Fight of the Night win over David Onama at Pechanga Arena in San Diego. Landwehr (16-4 MMA, 3-2 UFC) won a majority decision after going back-and-forth in an all-out war with Onama (10-2 MMA, 2-2 UFC) in the co-main event.

The fight was one of the most talked-about moments of the weekend and should be considered a Fight of the Year contender. And Landwehr enjoyed every minute of it.

“Yeah, I’ve had a lot of fun,” Landwehr said on “The MMA Hour.” “All my fights in Russia were badass fights. I also had some badass fights on the regional scene, and I’m glad I brought that to the UFC.”

Landwehr got tagged bad in the first round and looked close to succumbing to Onama’s power. The 34-year-old admits he had it tough early, but there was no way he was quitting.

“I mean, he caught me with a good one,” Landwehr said. “All you can do is keep going. What was I going to say? ‘Mama I can’t go?'”

He later added, “I got the heart of a champion, and everyone that’s around me knows that. There ain’t no stopping me.”

[lawrence-related id=2572110,2571832,2571806]

Landwehr bounced back in Round 2 to put a beating on Onama. Two of the three judges scored the round 10-8 for Landwehr, who believes he could’ve stopped Onama but got caught up entertaining the crowd.

“It was half my fault too,” Landwehr said. “I mean, I was having a good time. It was a great time. I think everything played out well. ..

“I could’ve finished it a couple of times, but that’s in the past and onto the next. I think anytime I would’ve started rapid fire for 10 seconds straight and the ref would’ve called it. In hindsight, I probably shouldn’t have let his ass up the last time because he clocked my ass. … But no, I think I got more notoriety doing it how it went.”

Twitter reacts to Nate Landwehr’s win over David Onama in all-time war at UFC on ESPN 41

SAN DIEGO – [autotag]David Onama[/autotag] looked like he had [autotag]Nate Landwehr[/autotag] dead to rights in the first round at UFC on ESPN 41. But then the tables turned.

After Onama (10-2 MMA, 2-2 UFC) scored a pair of slick knockdowns in the opening frame of the featherweight co-headliner on Saturday at Pechanga Arena, it looked like the result was inevitable. Then the second round began, and Landwehr (16-4 MMA, 3-2 UFC) turned the tide and started to take over.

Landwehr used grappling pressure, submission attempts and strikes to ware Onama down all through the second stanza. Onama showed incredible hard by throwing for the finish in the third round, and nearly got it, but ultimately Landwehr left with the majority decision win.

UFC on ESPN 41 Landwehr vs. Onama picks and predictions

Records: Landwehr (15-4-0) | Onama (10-1-0)

Fight result (2-way line or money line)

Onama (-370) will cost you over three and a half times your potential return, and that’s risky business, even against an inconsistent fighter such as Landwehr.

Onama, the Glory MMA & Fitness fighter hailing from Uganda, has a 2-inch reach advantage and holds a 1.09-to-0.54 takedown average. However, when he gets the victory, I am expecting it to come via knockout as Landwehr has been very susceptible to those. ONAMA BY TKO/KO (+110) is a much better play at plus money.

Over/Under (O/U)

Landwehr’s 2 losses at the UFC level have not only been via knockout but he has been dropped in the 1st round in each of the outings. As such, take a flier on UNDER 1.5 ROUNDS (+115) at plus money.

The UFC is in Southern California this week with a key bantamweight fight atop the card.

UFC on ESPN 41 takes place Saturday at Pechanga Arena in San Diego. The card airs on ESPN and streams on ESPN+.

(Click here to open a PDF of the staff picks grid in a separate window.)

In the main event, former bantamweight champion [autotag]Dominick Cruz[/autotag] (24-3 MMA, 7-2 UFC) takes on [autotag]Marlon Vera[/autotag] (21-7-1 MMA, 13-6 UFC). Vera is a sizable -250 favorite at Tipico Sportsbook; the comeback on Cruz is +190. But it’s not a blowout with our 11 editors, writers, radio hosts and videographers, who are siding with Vera at a 7-4 clip.

In the co-main event, [autotag]Nate Landwehr[/autotag] (15-4 MMA, 2-2 UFC) meets [autotag]David Onama[/autotag] (10-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) at featherweight. Onama is the biggest favorite on the main card at -320, and he’s a near-unanimous pick from our staff members at 10-1.

The only unanimous pick on the main card is [autotag]Yazmin Jauregui[/autotag] (8-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC) in her promotional debut against fellow debtante [autotag]Iasmin Lucindo[/autotag] (13-4 MMA, 0-0 UFC). Jauregui is more than a 2-1 favorite in the women’s strawweight bout and has an 11-0 shutout in the picks.

The closest fight from a betting perspective is between [autotag]Devin Clark[/autotag] (13-6 MMA, 7-6 UFC) and [autotag]Azamat Murzakanov[/autotag] (11-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) at light heavyweight. Murzakanov is just a -155 favorite, but he’s a near-unanimous pick at 10-1.

Another near-unanimous choice is [autotag]Ariane Lipski[/autotag] (14-7 MMA, 3-4 UFC) in her women’s flyweight bout against [autotag]Priscila Cachoeira[/autotag] (11-4 MMA, 3-4 UFC). Lipski is a -210 favorite and has a 10-1 blowout in the picks.

And to open the main card, [autotag]Gerald Meerschaert[/autotag] (34-15 MMA, 9-7 UFC) is a heavy underdog at middleweight against [autotag]Bruno Silva[/autotag] (22-7 MMA, 3-1 UFC), who is a 3-1 favorite and has a 10-1 near shutout from our staff members.

In the MMA Junkie reader consensus picks, Vera (58 percent), Onama (77 percent), Jauregui (84 percent), Murzakanov (79 percent), Lipski (74 percent) and Silva (76 percent) are the choices.

Nate Landwehr: David Onama good, but ‘I’m going to smash his face in’

Nate Landwehr aims to run right through David Onama in their co-main event at UFC on ESPN 41 in San Diego.

SAN DIEGO – [autotag]Nate Landwehr[/autotag] aims to run right through [autotag]David Onama[/autotag].

Landwehr (15-4 MMA, 2-2 UFC) faces Onama (10-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) in Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 41 co-main event at Pechanga Arena in San Diego. The card airs on ESPN and streams on ESPN+.

Onama boasts a 100 percent finishing rate, but Landwehr is confident that he takes him out.

“He’s good,” Landwehr said Wednesday at UFC on ESPN 41 media day. “He’s big, he’s tall, he’s young, he’s fast – I feel like I’m going to smash his face in. We’re going to see real quick. We’ve got five minutes to start off. We’ll see if we make it to the second five minutes. We’ll see if we make it to the third five minutes.”

Onama will compete in front of a crowd for the first time in his UFC tenure, as well as in a big co-headliner spot, but Landwehr expects him to bring the fight regardless.

“I don’t think there’s an edge,” Landwehr said. “I think the first time I ever did something cool, it felt natural, too. So it’s like you’ve either got it or you don’t. We’re going to see if he has it. He probably has it, and going to be a fist fight.”
