Wisconsin legend officially enshrined into Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame

Wisconsin legend Bo Ryan was officially enshrined into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on Sunday.

Ryan, who coached for the Badgers’ men’s basketball program from 2001-15, was among 13 basketball luminaries to represent the Hall of Fame’s class of ’24. 2004 NBA Finals MVP Chauncey Billups, 22-year NBA veteran Vince Carter, five-time NBA champion Michael Cooper and 1978 NBA Rookie of the Year Walter Davis were among the legends recognized. 

Ryan first received word of his place on the ballot as a finalist on April 6. Roughly seven months later, the moment he’d been waiting for came to fruition.

“I’m still pinching myself,” Ryan told NCAA reporter Andy Katz on Sunday. “When I got the word, all the memories, all the players, all the camaraderie of the teams that were cohesive… those are the things that flashed into my head. Boy, do I have a lot of people to thank.”

The Badger legend retired from manning the sidelines in 2015 after serving as head coach for 15 years in Madison. He captained UW to a a 364-130 overall record, 15 NCAA Tournament appearances, two Final Fours and one national championship game during his tenure.

Ryan was a four-time Big Ten Coach of the Year (2002, 2003, 2013, 2015) and established Wisconsin as one of the NCAA’s most respected programs across the nation. He was also inducted into the Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame in 2017.

Rick Barnes named Naismith Hall of Fame first time nominee

Tennessee head coach Rick Barnes named Naismith Hall of Fame first time nominee.

Tennessee head coach Rick Barnes is a first time nominee for the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

Barnes is one of 15 first time North American nominees.

“I feel incredibly blessed to be nominated for the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, the pinnacle of our sport,” Barnes said. “This distinction, though, is not just about me, but more about all the wonderful people who have impacted me throughout my coaching journey the last four-plus decades. I want to thank every coach, staff member, administrator, fan and friend who has supported me and the programs I’ve had the joy of working for. But most of all, I want to thank the players I’ve had the privilege of coaching, as well as my family for their unconditional love and for keeping me focused on the Lord and living for the glory of His kingdom.”

Barnes is in his 44th consecutive season as a college basketball coach, including his 37th consecutive campaign as a head coach.

Blair and Keady enshrined in Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame on Saturday

Gary Blair and Gene Keady both made key stops at Arkansas as part of their Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame resumes. They were enshrined Saturday night.

Former Arkansas women’s basketball coach Gary Blair and former Arkansas assistant basketball coach Gene Keady were both enshrined in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on Saturday night.

Blair coached the women’s program from 1993-2003, leading the program to its only Final Four appearance in 1998.

He posted a 198-120 record in those 10 seasons, along with winning the WNIT in 1999 and making at least the second round of the NCAA Tournament his last three seasons.

Texas A&M hired him in 2003 when his contract was not renewed by then women’s athletic director Bev Lewis.

Keady, meanwhile, was on Eddie Sutton’s staff in 1978 when the Razorbacks made their first Final Four since 1945.

He had a large hand in the development of the famed ‘Triplets’ (Ron Brewer, Marvin Delph, Sidney Moncrief) and left to take the Western Kentucky job and was with the Hilltoppers for two seasons before taking the Purdue job.

Purdue was where he made his legacy, as he won 512 games with the Boilermakers during a 35-year tenure and won Big Ten Coach of the Year seven times and National Coach of the Year five times.
