A Myles Turner trade is effectively off the table for the Lakers

Lakers fans have been dreaming of a Myles Turner trade, but the chances of one happening now are virtually zero.

Going back to last summer, Indiana Pacers center Myles Turner has been repeatedly linked to the Los Angeles Lakers as a potential trade target.

It has been for good reason. Turner is a potent 3-point shooter as well as an elite shot-blocker. It has been suggested by many fans and pundits that Turner could also help L.A. by allowing Anthony Davis to play the 4, which is his natural position, especially on the defensive end.

A package of Turner and sharpshooter Buddy Hield was reportedly on the table for the Lakers and available for Russell Westbrook and two first-round draft picks, but apparently general manager Rob Pelinka believed the offer wouldn’t have improved the Lakers enough.

Turner is no longer an option for the Lakers. He has agreed to a contract extension to stay in Indiana.

It is not known whether the Lakers prefer to go after another center, such as the Orlando Magic’s Mo Bamba, a wing or a ball-handling guard prior to the Feb. 9 trade deadline, although Brian Windhorst reported they may go for a backcourt addition.

It is also possible Pelinka may simply decide to stand pat and instead make a move this offseason.

Trade rumor rankings: D’Angelo Russell, John Collins and more

HoopsHype ranks the five players who have appeared most often in trade rumors, led by D’Angelo Russell and John Collins this week.

It’s time for another installment of our trade rumor rankings series, an important one considering it’s our first with under one month to go until the Feb. 9 trade deadline.

For those unfamiliar, in our trade rumor rankings series, we rank the five players who have appeared most often in trade rumors over the past week as judged by appearances on our trade rumors page.

Although many expect a quiet trade deadline with so many teams in the running for a playoff spot, it’s always smart to expect the unexpected in the NBA with regards to trades.

With some very interesting players to discuss, let’s jump right into the action.

Mock trade has Brooklyn Nets trading for Indiana Pacers big Myles Turner

Myles Turner could be what the doctor ordered for the Nets, hypothetically speaking.

The Brooklyn Nets have been rolling lately as they are on a 10-game winning streak and have won 14 of their last 15 games. However, there are some who believe that if the Nets are to make a championship run, they need to add more talent to their frontcourt. Hoopshabit.com wrote a piece earlier this week suggesting a trade that Brooklyn could do to make their team better.

For the season, the Nets frontcourt has been Kevin Durant, Royce O’Neale, and Nic Claxton. Durant is obviously the superstar of the team while O’Neale and Claxton are supporting players who have played well in their roles. However, with various players rumored to being on the trade block, such as Indiana Pacers center Myles Turners, there is a growing amount of people suggesting that the Nets make a move for some of those players.

Here’s what you need to know pertaining to this mock trade:

Rockets, James Harden tidbits from ESPN’s Zach Lowe, Tim MacMahon

In a new podcast episode of The Lowe Post, ESPN’s Zach Lowe and Tim MacMahon break down everything related to the #Rockets and a potential James Harden pursuit in 2023 free agency.

In a new podcast episode of “The Lowe Post,” ESPN’s Zach Lowe and Tim MacMahon break down everything related to the Houston Rockets and a potential James Harden pursuit in 2023 free agency.

The episode was taped Tuesday afternoon, two days after a report from ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski rocked the NBA by suggesting Harden could be headed back to Houston next summer.

While both Lowe and MacMahon said they personally wouldn’t pursue Harden, if they were the Rockets, they also acknowledge the team may decide differently and explored the potential reasons.

The ESPN duo also dropped a few interesting tidbits related to other options for the Rockets in the 2023 offseason, including Brooklyn guard Kyrie Irving and Indiana big man Myles Turner. See below for select excerpts, and listen to the complete discussion below (the Houston portion of the podcast starts at the 21:15 mark).

Jeanie Buss said no to trading Russell Westbrook for Buddy Hield, Myles Turner

Russell Westbrook has improved his play so much that Lakers owner Jeanie Buss didn’t want to give him up for Buddy Hield and Myles Turner.

One of the most persistent trade rumors involving the Los Angeles Lakers over the last several months has been a potential deal that would send Russell Westbrook and draft assets to the Indiana Pacers for Buddy Hield and Myles Turner.

Plenty of fans have pushed for the deal, especially now that Turner is shooting an outstanding 43.2% from 3-point range this season.

But with Westbrook sparking the team instead of being seen as a liability in his new bench role, it has been harder for the Lakers to embrace any trade offer that involves him.

In fact, team owner Jeanie Buss turned down the opportunity to acquire Hield and Turner for Westbrook.

Via Lakers Daily:

“Sam Amick of The Athletic looked into how that reluctance by Buss played a role in Westbrook staying with the Lakers, where he’s now being used as a key reserve.

“‘Westbrook may not be thrilled with the role, but his improved play and intensity speak volumes about his willingness to accept the reality that it’s the right move for this team,’ Amick wrote. ‘This is why Lakers owner Jeanie Buss was known to be reluctant to give up on Westbrook in those days leading into training camp, when they came so close to doing the well-chronicled deal with Indiana that would have sent Westbrook to the Pacers in exchange for big man Myles Turner and sharpshooter Buddy Hield.'”

If the Lakers were to land Turner, it would allow Anthony Davis to play more power forward, which would help them defensively, especially since Turner is such an effective shot blocker. In addition, Turner’s 3-point shooting prowess would open the floor for Davis and LeBron James while putting a big dent in their biggest weakness.

However, position-wise, the Lakers need help at the wing and forward spots more than at the 5.

Every NBA trade rumor you need to pay attention to, starting with Russell Westbrook’s future with the Lakers

Could Russell Westbrook be part of the Lakers’ long-term plan?

It’s December 15 and the NBA’s real trade season is unofficially here.

Teams have been able to make trades since the offseason, of course. But starting today, players free agents who signed deals in the offseason are able to be traded. That opens up the NBA’s trade market even more. It’s why December 15 is so important.

With that in mind, there are already a ton of trade rumors swirling around the NBA. There are still a couple of months to go before the NBA’s trade deadline, so nothing really seems imminent. But there are some things swirling out there that are worth paying attention to.

Here is every trade rumor you should be paying attention to so far.

The top 10 NBA players who may realistically get traded to the Lakers, ranked

Maybe they’re not trading for Zach LaVine. But who else could be available?

The Lakers had a recent resurgence, but still have a losing record this season. As of right now, they’re on the outside looking in on the playoffs.

Considering that they owe their first-round pick to the Pelicans in a swap, however, they do not have the option to bottom out and tank. Instead, with Anthony Davis playing some of the best basketball of his life, Los Angeles will likely pursue deals to improve their roster.

The NBA hot stove is starting to heat up fast. Many insiders believe that a trade is “imminent” for the Lakers, who reportedly believe they are only a couple of players away from turning this team into “legitimate contenders” this season.

It seems far more likely that Los Angeles pursues “smaller deals” involving mid-sized contracts like Patrick Beverley and Kendrick Nunn rather than a bigger trade centered around Russell Westbrook and one or multiple future first-round picks.

That means that there could be multiple trades on the horizon, and based on what we know so far from all of the reporting, these are the most likely trade candidates for Los Angeles.

Pacers center Myles Turner loves watching Houston’s Alperen Sengun

“I like the way he plays, and I like the way he carries himself,” Indiana’s Myles Turner tells @ScoopB regarding second-year #Rockets center Alperen Sengun. “His court vision is crazy.”

The Rockets will likely have significant salary cap room in 2023, and longtime Indiana Pacers big man Myles Turner has been speculated by some as a potential Houston target in free agency. Turner is a pending free agent, and he has Texas roots.

The argument against signing Turner, however, is Houston already has a promising player at center. At 20 years old and in just his second NBA season, Alperen Sengun is averaging 14.4 points (53.8% FG), 9 rebounds and 26.9 minutes per game.

While the 26-year-old Turner is the better player, especially as a shot blocker, it’s certainly possible Sengun closes that gap in the years ahead. If that happens, one person who might not be entirely surprised is Turner himself.

In a new interview with Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson” of Bally Sports, Turner identified Sengun as one of his favorite players to watch in the entire NBA. Among his comments:

I like the kid from Houston, Alperen Şengün. I like the way he plays, and I like the way he carries himself. His court vision is crazy, and so he’s one of my favorite guys to watch.

Sengun had 11 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists in Houston’s home loss against Turner and the Pacers on Nov. 18. The Rockets will make their visit to Indiana on March 9.

Takeaways: Eric Gordon scores season-high 24 points, but Rockets collapse vs. Pacers

Eric Gordon scored a season-high 24 points, but the Rockets blew an early 20-point lead in an offensively challenged home loss to Indiana. Kevin Porter Jr. sat out with a sore back.

HOUSTON — In the opener of a four-game homestand, the Rockets blew an early 20-point lead in Friday’s 99-91 home loss (box score) to Indiana. The Pacers won for the fifth time in six games to improve to 8-6, while the Rockets fell to an NBA-worst 3-13.

Eric Gordon scored a season-high 24 points on 8-of-17 shooting (47.1%), and he also had 6 rebounds and 3 assists. Unfortunately, the veteran didn’t have much help on offense, with Jalen Green (20.0%), Jabari Smith Jr. (28.6%), and Alperen Sengun (30.8%) all struggling from the field and Kevin Porter Jr. out with a sore back.

Veteran big man Myles Turner had 17 points (62.5% FG) and 4 blocked shots for the Pacers, with his interior presence serving as a major deterrent at the rim. For the game, Houston shot 20-of-51 from inside the paint (39.2%). Frontcourt partner Jalen Smith had 10 points and a game-high 18 rebounds, along with 4 assists and 3 blocks.

It was a themed night for the Rockets, who debuted new green-and-gold Hardwood Classic uniforms to honor the franchise’s San Diego days while also retiring the No. 44 jersey of Hall of Fame center Elvin Hayes to the Toyota Center rafters at halftime. Hayes was a star player for the Rockets in both San Diego and Houston.

As for the current team, scroll on for highlights, analysis, and postgame interviews. Houston’s four-game homestand continues Sunday night versus Golden State, with tipoff set for 6 p.m. Central.

The Clippers may go after Pacers center Myles Turner

There is another NBA team in Los Angeles that may try to trade for Indiana Pacers center Myles Turner.

The Los Angeles Lakers aren’t the only team that has been interested in Indiana Pacers center Myles Turner.

The Pacers have expressed an interest in letting him go for the right price, and the price for the Lakers has reportedly been Russell Westbrook plus two future first-round draft picks for both Turner and sharpshooter Buddy Hield.

Los Angeles hasn’t said yes, at least not yet, apparently because it doesn’t believe Turner and Hield would move the needle enough.

Now, according to Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report, the Lakers’ Crypto.com Arena co-tenants, the Los Angeles Clippers may make a move for the shot-blocking center.

Via Bleacher Report:

“Much has been made of the perceived trade stalemate between the Indiana Pacers and Los Angeles Lakers, but the Los Angeles Clippers may change the conversation entirely.

“According to multiple sources, the Clippers have discussed targeting Myles Turner in the market.”

The Clippers may need a legitimate center more than the Lakers do. Paul George and crew only have one serviceable 5 on their roster, Ivica Zubac, and he is their only rotation player who is taller than 6-foot-8.
