Camren Wynter’s last-second shot lifts Penn State over Maryland

Penn State basketball got a big boost for its tournament hopes with a thrilling win over Maryland.

March has treated Penn State very well. On the first of the month, they beat Northwestern at the buzzer in overtime. They followed up that ending with another buzzer beater against Maryland to win 65-64.

It was a great ending for the many seniors that played their last game in the Bryce Jordan Center.

Senior Night is always an emotional game for any program. It was especially emotional for Penn State on Sunday as they said goodbye to their seniors on their home floor for the last time.

Penn State started the game out hot, jumping to a 10-4 lead four minutes into the game. Maryland responded and went on a huge run as Penn State’s offense went ice cold.

After taking a 15-14 lead on senior [autotag]Michael Henn[/autotag]’s three, they didn’t score a point for over eight minutes.

By the time they broke the drought with four minutes left in the first half, Maryland had taken a 28-17 lead.

The deficit increased and the Nittany Lions went into the locker room trailing 35-22. It would have been worse if not for [autotag]Jalen Pickett[/autotag]’s buzzer beating three before halftime, a prequal to what was coming later in the game.

On Senior Night, it was the seniors who led the way for their comeback victory.

It was a game of runs in the second half. Penn State would cut into the deficit and then Maryland would extend it. The Nittany Lions were still trailing by ten points with five minutes left in the game.

From that point on, only seniors scored the rest of the way.

[autotag]Myles Dread[/autotag] hit a three to cut the lead to five. He finished the game with 11 points and three made three pointers. This is a good sign for Penn State and Dread who has been struggling late in the season.

With 43 seconds left, [autotag]Camren Wynter [/autotag]made a layup after a beautiful pass from Pickett to give Penn State their first lead of the second half.

Maryland’s [autotag]Julian Reese[/autotag] hit a layup of his own to get the lead back.

Trailing 64-63 with 19 seconds left, Penn State had one possession to win the game.

[autotag]Seth Lundy[/autotag] pulled up from three at the top of the key. The ball bounced off the rim and into a scrum of players. Wynter, the smallest player in the scrum, came up with the ball. He immediately went up and scored a layup to give Penn State a 65-64 victory.

That’s two game winners from Wynter in the last two games. He’s been on a tear down the stretch, playing a huge role in Penn State’s strong close to the regular season.

Pickett scored a team high 16 points, adding seven rebounds and seven assists. [autotag]Andrew Funk[/autotag] added 14 points with four three pointers. Wynter scored six points but had the most important basket of the game.

Maryland senior guard [autotag]Jahmir Young[/autotag] scored a game high 26 points with eight rebounds. Reese, [autotag]Don Carey[/autotag] and [autotag]Ian Martinez[/autotag] joined Young in double figures.

With this win, Penn State secured a bye in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament and will be playing on the second day.

Jalen Pickett, Seth Lundy, Andrew Funk, Camren Wynter, Michael Henn and Myles Dread were the seniors honored on Senior Day.

Check out these photos from Penn State basketball’s big win over Maryland to keep tournament hopes alive!

With their tournament hopes still hanging in the balance with a week to go until Selection Sunday, Penn State knew it needed to get a win against Maryland in order to remain in the conversation. Despite being down by as many as 16 points on its home court against Maryland, Jalen Pickett and Camren Wynter and the Nittany Lions roared back for a thrilling win with a game-winning basket off an offensive rebound by Wynter with just half a second left on the clock to down Maryland 65-64.

Penn State closed out the regular season winning four of its final five games, highlighted by gut-check wins that went down to the wire at Northwestern and home against Maryland, two teams expected to be going to the NCAA Tournament as an at-large team at the minimum. Penn State hopes to join them but will still have to sell itself to the selection committee with a decent showing in the Big Ten tournament. But before turning a page to the conference tournament this week, let’s relish in the images from a potential season-saving victory one final time.

After four difficult losses in Big Ten play, to say Penn State needed a win on Tuesday night would be a massive understatement, But Penn State came out with some hot shooting and [autotag]Jalen Pickett[/autotag] electrified the offense with a 41-point outburst as the Nittany Lions snapped its losing ways with a home win against Illinois,

Penn State knocked off Illinois in a high-scoring affair with a 93-81 victory in the Bryce Jordan Center on Tuesday evening. The win improved Penn State to 15-11 overall and 6-9 in Big Ten play. The win came on a big night for the Big Ten standings as Wisconsin and Nebraska also won their games on Tuesday night, allowing the Nittany Lions to avoid falling farther down the Big Ten standings.

Penn State basketball drops another game on the road against Nebraska

Penn State basketball had an ugly loss on Sunday at Nebraska, the second-worst team in the Big Ten.

It’s no secret Penn State has struggled away from home this season. After their 72-63 loss to Nebraska on Sunday afternoon, they now have one win and five losses on the road in Big Ten play.

That’s been the story for Penn State. A tale of two teams. At home, they can play with anybody. On the road, they struggle no matter who the opponent is.

After losing by 20 points to Purdue in their previous game, the game against Nebraska was very winnable on paper. Oddsmakers actually favored Penn State by 4.5 points.

The oddsmakers were wrong.

Penn State got off to a poor start and went into halftime trailing by nine points. They had moments in the second half where they cut into the deficit and tried to make a run. However, they couldn’t quite get over the hurdle.

This was in large part to Nebraska’s guard Keisei Tominaga. He finished with a game high 30 points and five three pointers.

[autotag]Seth Lundy[/autotag] was Penn State’s leading scorer with 24 points and a record setting eight three pointers. [autotag]Jalen Pickett[/autotag] added 15 points with seven assists and seven rebounds.

As has been the case all season, the shooting did not travel with the team when they left home. They shot 14-38 from three point range and that’s with Seth Lundy’s eight three pointers. The bench combined for eight points, including zero from guard [autotag]Myles Dread[/autotag].

In Big Ten play, Penn State averages around 15 points per game more at home than when they go on the road. Their defense gives up about two more points on the road than when playing at home.

That is not a recipe for being competitive in this conference.

Head coach [autotag]Micah Shrewsberry[/autotag] has to figure out a way for his players to perform away from the Bryce Jordan Center. They have 11 wins this season at home, including four in Big Ten play. Their only loss at home was against Michigan State in early December.

Penn State’s next game is Wednesday night at home against a Wisconsin team who struggles on the road.

The Nittany Lions are currently 5-7 in conference play. They need to continue playing well at home and compete on the road if they want to build momentum leading into the Big Ten tournament.

Penn State basketball can’t slow down No. 1 Purdue

Penn State had no answer for Purdue’s Mason Gillis in Wednesday night’s road loss

Penn State has seen some terrific nights throwing three-pointers through the net this season, but on Wednesday night the fortune was reversed in a big way. Purdue’s Mason Gillis was a man on fire from three-point range as he turned in a career night with nine made three-pointers and 29 points in a 80-60 victory over Penn State.

Penn State trailed the Boilermakers by six at halftime but could not keep up the pace after halftime. Similar to their previous meeting with Purdue in Philadelphia earlier this season, Purdue had everything working for it after halftime while Penn State could not keep pace. Such is the difference between a polished program like Purdue, which has lost just once all season, and Penn State, a program that is showing signs of improvement but is looking to continue taking the next steps forward.

While there is no shame in losing on the road against the top-ranked team in the country, there could be some frustrations for head coach [autotag]Micah Shrewsberry[/autotag], who for the second time saw his team lag behind Purdue after the halftime break. This is the second double-digit road loss for Penn State in the past week after losing at Rutgers so badly last week that Shrewsberry openly criticized his team’s effort (which led to a big turnaround with a big home win against Michigan).

[autotag]Seth Lundy[/autotag] was Penn State’s leader in scoring with 18 points and rebounds with six. [autotag]Jalen Pickett[/autotag] added 12 points with seven assists and five rebounds. But [autotag]Andrew Funk[/autotag] managed to contribute just two points and was a cold 0-for-6 from three-point range. Penn State’s bench contributed 15 points with [autotag]Camryn Wynter[/autotag] and [autotag]Myles Dread[/autotag] limited to just three points each in 31 combined minutes.

[autotag]Evan Mahaffey[/autotag] was a bit of a bright spot off the bench with seven points on 3-for-3 shooting in 14 minutes. But this night was all about Purdue’s Gillis and his 29 points in 24 minutes.

Penn State dropped one game below .500 in Big Ten with the loss. The Nittany Lions will look to get a rebound win when they travel to Nebraska for a Sunday afternoon game.

Penn State basketball comes up short at Wisconsin

Photos from Penn State basketball’s road loss at Wisconsin in Big Ten play.

Second-half struggles came back to haunt Penn State on the road at Wisconsin on Tuesday night with the Nittany Lions coming up short in a 63-60 setback. Penn State led the way at the halftime mark following a back-and-forth first half, but Wisconsin’s defense clamped down on the Penn State offense in the second half as Penn State was outscored 33-24 after halftime.

[autotag]Jalen Pickett[/autotag] led the Nittany Lions with 19 points and 12 rebounds for a double-double, his fifth of the season. [autotag]Andrew Funk[/autotag] chipped in 16 points and [autotag]Myles Dread[/autotag] added 11 points off the bench.

[autotag]Seth Lundy[/autotag] was limited to just 22 minutes after getting into foul trouble. He and [autotag]Evan Mahaffey[/autotag] ran into foul trouble, but Lundy had an especially tough outing against the Badgers with just

Penn State sat just 9-of-24 in the second half and was 3-for-11 from three-point range.

The loss drops Penn State to 12-6 overall and 3-4 in the Big Ten. The Badgers improved to 12-5 overall and 4-3 in conference play. Penn State will return home for its next game on Saturday against Nebraska.

Here are the best photos from Penn State basketball’s game at the Palestra vs. Purdue

Penn State basketball once again made itself at home in one of college basketball’s historic venues, the Palestra in Philadelphia, on Sunday evening against one of the top teams in the sport, the Purdue Boilermakers. Purdue brought a no. 1 ranking into the Palestra and looked to avoid being the first top-ranked team in the AP poll to lose a game in the arena in over 60 years, but Penn State gave the Boilermakers a bit of a scare in the first half.

Penn State couldn’t build off the energy of leading Purdue at halftime and struggled to slow down the momentum shift favoring Purdue after halftime.

Here are some of the best photos from Penn State’s virtual home game in the Palestra against No. 1 Purdue.

Penn State basketball holds off Iowa for New Year’s Day victory

Penn State basketball started off 2023 by holding on for a win against Iowa

If Penn State needed a good gut check, it passed it on New Year’s Day. Penn State led Iowa by 18 points at halftime and had every reason to feel good about securing another win on its home court on Sunday, but Iowa made a serious run at the Nittany Lions in the second half. But each time Iowa cut things razor sharp on the scoreboard, Penn State responded and that led to a hard-earned 83-79 victory for the Nittany Lions, improving its record to 11-3 this season overall and 2-1 in the Big Ten as 2023 was ushered in on a winning note.

Penn State controlled and frustrated Iowa in the first half and led by a score of 44-26 at the break. But Iowa chipped away in the second half with Kris Murray’s game-high 32 points leading the way. Iowa came within a basket of Penn State twice in the second half but [autotag]Jalen Pickett[/autotag] and [autotag]Seth Lundy[/autotag] each came through on the free throw line in the final minute with four combined free throws made to help keep Penn State ahead of the Hawkeyes by just enough.

Pickett led the Nittany Lions with 26 points to go with his seven rebounds and six assists and one steal. the 26 points scored by Pickett is his personal best since joining the Penn State program last season. [autotag]Andrew Funk[/autotag] was the team’s second-leading scorer with 20 points fueled by five three-pointers. Lundy, who recorded a double-double in his last game, added 10 points and five rebounds. Penn State also got 14 points from [autotag]Camren Wynter[/autotag] to have four starters have double-digit point totals.

[autotag]Myles Dread[/autotag] contributed seven points off the Penn State bench and is now just two points shy of the 1,000-point mark for his career.

Next up for Penn State is a road trip to Michigan. The Nittany Lions tipoff with the Wolverines on Wednesday night on the Big Ten Network. Michigan improved to 8-5 this season with a thrashing of Maryland in Ann Arbor on Sunday. Michigan blew out Maryland 81-46.

Seth Lundy records double-double in return, Penn State tops Delaware State

Seth Lundy records double-double in return as Penn State tops Delaware State

[autotag]Seth Lundy[/autotag] certainly left an impact on the court in his return to action after missing one game due to injury. Lundy recorded a double-double in Penn State’s 60-46 home win over Delaware State on Thursday afternoon. The win improved Penn State to 10-3 as the calendar year and non-conference schedule comes to a close. Penn State will play a Big Ten schedule for the remainder of the season beginning on Sunday against Iowa.

Lundy scored a game-high 15 points and added 10 rebounds for the double-double, his second of the season. He was also the team’s leading scorer for the fourth time this season. [autotag]Andrew Funk[/autotag] (12 points) and [autotag]Jalen Pickett[/autotag] (10 points) each recorded double-digit point totals in the win.

Penn State’s offense wasn’t exactly lighting up the scoreboard in its final home game of 2022, but it didn’t have to. The defense held the struggling visitors to fewer than 50 points, marking the first time that happened this season.

[autotag]Myles Dread[/autotag] continues to inch closer to the 1,000-point mark. With six points against the Hornets, Dread is now nine points away from the century mark.

Penn State’s next game will help usher in 2023 with a Big Ten contest against Iowa. Penn State will host the Hawkeyes at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, January 1, 2023.

Penn State basketball suffers first loss to Virginia Tech in Charleston Classic

Penn State men’s basketball will look to rebound form its first loss of the season

Well, it was bound to happen sooner or later, but the Penn State men’s basketball team took its first loss of the season on Friday. Penn State battled back in the second half against Virginia Tech in the second round of the Shiners Children’s Charleston Classic on Friday afternoon but could not quite pull itself out of the hole it dug before halftime. Penn State lost to the Hokies by a score of 61-59.

Virginia Tech outpaced Penn State from the start of the game and built a 16-point lead, which provided the Nittany Lions with their first real dose of adversity early on in the season. The rally was led by [autotag]Andrew Funk[/autotag], who led the way with a 21-point effort, and five three-pointers made by [autotag]Myles Dread[/autotag]. After their 20-point efforts in the opening game of the tournament, [autotag]Jalen Pickett[/autotag] and [autotag]Seth Lundy[/autotag] were limited to just 13 combined points by the Virginia Tech defense.

The Hokies had balanced scoring from its starting five with four starters scoring in double-digits. Grant Basile led the effort with 17 points in just 26 minutes for the Hokies.

Penn State will now play in the third-place game of the Charleston Classic on Sunday evening. The Nittany Lions will face Colorado State. The Rams blew out South Carolina in its opening game of the tournament but lost to the host school, Charleston, on Friday. Charleston will face Virginia Tech on Sunday afternoon for the tournament championship.
