Two Michigan State football players named to All-Big Ten teams

With the end of the regular college football season upon us, it’s officially awards season. While it wasn’t the best season in Michigan State football history, the Spartans had some players who stood out amongst the competition this year at their positions, especially on special teams, and for that, two Spartans were rewarded with placements on All-Big Ten teams.

Those players were Punter Ryan Eckley and Kicker Jonathan Kim.

Both players made the second team for the coaches, while Kim made the second team for the media and Eckley was third team.

Charles Brantley, Khris Bogle, Luke Newman, and Jordan Turner were all honorable mentions.

Jonathan Smith says Michigan State didn’t play well enough to earn bowl game

Jonathan Smith says Michigan State didn’t play well enough to earn a bowl game

Michigan State football’s season ended in disappointing fashion on Saturday with a lopsided loss to Rutgers at home in a snowy Spartan Stadium. The Spartans will now end their season with a losing record and without an invite to a bowl game.

While this was always a possible result under new head coach Jonathan Smith, who has been tasked with turning a program around quickly, but it was still a disappointing and frustrating year for MSU football.

After the loss to Rutgers, Jonathan Smith spoke to the media, where he started by saying the team did not play well enough to earn a bowl game invite. Smith thanked his seniors, who he said earned his respect for their willingness to try to adapt to his methodology and system, and he also acknowledged that the team needs to get better this offseason, and that starts with him.

Michigan State QB Aidan Chiles promises change is coming to MSU football in 2025

Aidan Chiles had some spicy comments after MSU’s last game of the year

Michigan State football will officially miss a bowl game for the third straight year, and the first year since Jonathan Smith took over the program. After the game, quarterback Aidan Chiles had some extremely spicy things to say about what happened this season, the fans, and what’s coming next year.

In particular, Chiles started with some comments that will probably be divisive, as he calls out the fans who left Saturday’s loss to Rutgers early. He also called out some of his teammates, saying he didn’t like the mentality he saw from some of his fellow MSU players this season:

“I no longer care about the fans, at all… except the ones who stayed, they were cool… I think its been this consistent thing that we don’t know how to finish games… maybe its ‘I don’t want to play’, maybe its the attitude, I don’t know what it is, I don’t have that attitude. It’s disheartening, I don’t like that mentality… To the fans that stayed throughout the whole game and the whole season, this will not be the same next year, and I can promise you that.”

NBA draft analyst says he has Jase Richardson projected as a first round draft pick

NBA draft specialist Sam Vecenie says he has Jase Richardson projected as a first round draft pick

This might lead to some mixed reactions from Michigan State basketball fans but after MSU’s win over Colorado in the Maui Invitational, NBA draft analyst Sam Vecenie was asked about his thoughts on Jase Richardson.

Vecenie said that in his most recent top-100 player rankings, he has Jase Richardson ‘quite high, and in the first round’.

Richardson led MSU in scoring in the win over Colorado with a career-high 13 points. He has been the breakout star of this season so far for the Spartans and is probably getting close to earning a starting spot if he keeps playing like this.

Michigan State football successfully flips 3-star RB Zion Gist from Western Michigan

Michigan State successfully flips 3-star RB Zion Gist from Western Michigan

Back in June, 3-star running back Zion Gist committed to Western Michigan. However, the Spartans hosted Gist for an official visit this weekend for the Purdue game, and he must have liked what he saw, because on Monday, Gist flipped his committed from Western Michigan to Michigan State football.

Gist is the No. 141 ranked running back in the 2025 class by 247Sports and their No. 58 ranked player in the state of Illinois.

For those who may be sneering at MSU flipping a Western Michigan player, remember, one of MSU’s best players of this decade was originally from the Broncos.

Michigan State guard Jase Richardson cleared to play in Maui Invitational

Michigan State guard Jase Richardson (ankle) cleared to play in Maui Invitational

According to Jon Rothstein, Michigan State basketball’s freshman guard Jase Richardson will be available to play against Colorado in the Maui Invitational.

Jase suffered an ankle injury against Samford in what looked to be pretty serious, so it’s a huge relief for MSU fans to see Richardson available for today’s match-up.

Richardson has been a revelation for the Spartans this year, averaging 8.4 points per game and shooting 50-percent from three on a team that has struggled from distance.

Tom Izzo says Jase Richardson should be back from injury for Maui Invitational

Tom Izzo says Jase Richardson should be back from injury for Maui Invitational

Michigan State basketball has star in the making in freshman Jase Richardson. Spartan fans got a big scare in the team’s win against Samford, however, when Richardson went down with an injury that looked like it might be a sprained ankle. Fortunately for MSU, Tom Izzo told the media on Thursday after practice that Jase Richardson should be ‘good to go’ for next weeks’ Maui Invitational.

The Spartans will need Richardson against a stacked lineup in Maui that features teams like UConn, North Carolina, and Auburn.

Michigan State basketball overcomes slow start to beat Samford

Michigan State basketball overcomes slow start to beat Samford

Michigan State basketball was able to overcome another slow start on Tuesday to beat Samford at home 83 to 75. The Spartans are now 4-1 on the season and undefeated at the Breslin Center after the win.

This is another win for MSU that won’t feel too great, as MSU never fully separated from a scrappy Samford team, but ultimately figured enough out to leave with the victory. I think one of the big takeaways from this one is that Samford might just be an NCAA Tournament caliber team.

For the Spartans, this was another game that featured the two-center lineup with MSU starting the game with Jaxon Kohler and Szymon Zapala on the floor. That combination really struggled and Samford came out of the gates with a big lead, but Michigan State was able to weather that barrage and head into halftime with a 38 to 28 lead thanks to some heroics from Jaden Akins, who scored a career high 25 points.

Samford actually outscored MSU in the second half, but it wasn’t enough, and MSU gets their fourth win of the season.
