MSU basketball handles Ohio State to end regular season with a Senior Day win

The Michigan State basketball seniors will go out as victors in their final home game at the Breslin Center

The Michigan State basketball seniors will go out as victors in their final home game at the Breslin Center.

Michigan State used a hot start and strong finish to hold off Ohio State and end the regular season with a 84-78 victory on Saturday. This was potentially the final home game at the Breslin Center for Joey Hauser, Malik Hall, Tyson Walker and Jason Whitens.

Michigan State started the game on the right foot, jumping out to an early 13-point lead thanks to a 12-0 run. The Buckeyes would chip away at that lead but the Spartans ended the opening half strong to carry a 43-34 lead into the break.

The Buckeyes wouldn’t go away easy in the second half, with Ohio State cutting the Spartans lead to just three points with five minutes to go in the game. However, Michigan State would never surrender their lead throughout the second half and eventually ice the victory at the free throw line late.

Michigan State was led offensively by A.J. Hoggard who scored 23 points and dished out seven assists. Hauser (16 points), Walker (15 points), Jaden Akins (13 points) and Hall (10 points) each also reached double-digits in points on Saturday.

Michigan State finishes the regular season with victories in five of their final seven games. The Spartans now sit at 19-11 overall and 11-8 in conference play. Michigan State is in position to potentially earn a double-bye in next week’s Big Ten Tournament, but will have to wait until all of tomorrow’s games are completed before they know their final standings position in the league.

Matchup analysis, game prediction for MSU-Ohio State from LSJ’s Graham Couch

See how LSJ’s Graham Couch envisions Michigan State’s game against Ohio State playing out on Saturday

It’s Senior Day at Michigan State on Saturday afternoon.

The Spartans will welcome the Buckeyes to the Breslin Center looking to finish the regular season strong with a season-sweep of Ohio State. Michigan State topped the Buckeyes earlier this year by more than 20 points in Columbus.

Michigan State comes into this tilt after a massive comeback victory at Nebraska on Tuesday. That win over the Cornhuskers should have clinched a berth in the NCAA Tournament for the Spartans, but a win over Ohio State would only improve their resume.

Ohio State is also coming into this game on a high note after winning their past two games against Illinois and Maryland (both of which were at home). Prior to those two wins, the Buckeyes had lost 14 of their last 15 games.

Michigan State will have another opportunity on Sunday to help bolster their NCAA Tournament resume in a road test at Ohio State.

The Spartans picked up a much-needed victory on Tuesday against Maryland to snap a two-game losing streak. That victory improved Michigan State to 15-9 overall and 7-6 in conference play, and more importantly was a tournament boosting win.

Ohio State has been in a downward spiral over the past month and winning in Columbus won’t be as notable as before, but this is certainly another great opportunity for Michigan State.

MSU football drops fourth straight game in another double-digit loss vs. Ohio State

Another week, another blowout loss for Michigan State

Another week, another blowout loss for Michigan State.

For a fourth straight week, Michigan State fell by double digits — this time against Ohio State, 49-20. The Buckeyes entered this game as a near four-touchdown favorite, and while things were close into the second quarter, that quickly changed.

Michigan State fought strong throughout most of the first half, with the Spartans cashing in on an interception touchdown by Charles Brantley and a touchdown reception from Jayden Reed. Those two big-time plays had Michigan State down 21-13 about halfway through the second quarter. However, Ohio State would score a pair of touchdowns from there to carry a commanding 35-13 lead into halftime.

Ohio State opened the second half with a pair of touchdowns to build a five-touchdown lead and would start to pull their starters from there with the game in command.

Ohio State quarterback CJ Stroud finished with 361 passing yards, six touchdowns and one interception. He only had five incomplete passes — one less than touchdowns thrown. Conversely, Michigan State quarterback Payton Thorne finished with 113 passing yards for one touchdown and one interception.

Overall, the Spartans were out gained by Ohio State 614-to-202 in total yards. The Buckeyes had 29 first downs to only 12 for the Spartans.

Michigan State will return to the field next week looking to snap their lengthy losing streak against Wisconsin. The Badgers will come to Spartan Stadium, with kickoff scheduled for 4 p.m. ET.
