MSU basketball opens season outside top 10 of KenPom rankings

The computers don’t like Michigan State basketball entering the season as much as the media

The computers don’t like Michigan State basketball entering the season as much as the media.

Michigan State has been a consensus preseason top five team in every media poll I’ve seen leading up to the 2023-24 season. However, in the initial KenPom rankings that dropped on Sunday, Michigan State is not even in the top 10.

The preseason Pomeroy College Basketball Ratings have the Spartans listed at No. 13 nationally. Michigan State is the second-highest team from the Big Ten behind only Purdue who came in at No. 1. Directly behind the Spartans from the Big Ten was Illinois (No. 19), Wisconsin (No. 20) and Maryland (No. 23).

MSU basketball gets big boost in NET, KenPom rankings after win over OSU

Michigan State’s win over Ohio State could go a long way in continuing the Spartans’ NCAA Tournament streak

Michigan State’s win over Ohio State may just go a long way in returning to the NCAA Tournament.

While the Buckeyes have been struggling as of late — losers in 11 of their last 12 games — they still are ranked high in the NET and KenPom rankings. So the Spartans’ convincing road win over Ohio State on Sunday meant Michigan State saw a big boost in each ranking.

According to Kyle Austin of MLive, Michigan State moved up nine spots in the NET rankings to No. 32 and 11 spots in KenPom to No. 30. That is a very sizable jump in both rankings from just one game’s result.

Michigan State will return to the floor on Wednesday in a home game against Minnesota. Tip-off from the Breslin Center is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET and the game can be seen on the Big Ten Network.

College basketball is right around the corner, with the Spartans opening the 2022-23 season in less than a month.

Michigan State enters the 2022-23 season as one of the top teams in the Big Ten, with the media recently picking them to finish fourth in the league. But how do the computers view the Spartans?
