MSU’s Jonathan Smith comments on hiring of two new assistant coaches

See what MSU head coach Jonathan Smith had to say about the two new Spartans assistant coach hires

Michigan State football hired two new coaches on Monday, which should complete head coach Jonathan Smith’s staff for the 2025 season.

The Spartans announced James Adams as the new safeties coach and Jon Boyer as the new quarterbacks coach on Monday morning. Adams comes from Wake Forest where he served as the associate head coach and Boyer comes from Oregon State where he previously was the tight ends coach.

With the two new hires, Smith released a statement on his new assistants following the official hiring announcement. Below is the official statement from Smith on Adams and Boyer:

“We are excited to welcome James Adams and Jon Boyer to East Lansing. James stood out during the interview process as someone who would be a great fit for our staff. He has extensive experience coaching defensive backs and has been held in high regard on previous staffs with additional responsibilities as assistant and associate head coach. He will work well alongside Coach Blue Adams in the secondary.

“In having worked with Jon for several years at Oregon State, he has a thorough knowledge of our offensive scheme and what we’re trying to accomplish on that side of the ball. He has strong relationships with our staff, and has done a great job throughout his career of developing and working with quarterbacks.”

Hearing really good reviews as a recruiter among my high school contacts. One called him a ‘slam dunk’ and a ‘future head coach.'”

Adams will serve as the Spartans’ safeties coach.
