Michigan State football is one of the all-time top 25 programs, according to the Associated Press (AP).

College Football News developed a formula that compiles the top 25 greatest programs in college football history based on the final AP Top 25 polls since 1936. That formula spit out a list of 25 teams, which included Michigan State.

The Spartans came in at No. 19 in the all-time rankings, which is fifth in the current Big Ten and seventh in the future Big Ten. The current Big Ten teams ahead of Michigan State were Ohio State (No. 2), Michigan (No. 4), Nebraska (No. 7) and Penn State (No. 9).

There aren’t many out there as high on the Spartans entering the 2022 season as RJ Young of FOX Sports

There aren’t many out there as high on the Spartans entering the 2022 season as RJ Young of Fox Sports.

Young released on Sunday his preseason top 25, which had the Spartans as the second-highest team in the Big Ten. Michigan State landed at No. 7 in his preseason rankings behind only Ohio State from the Big Ten at No. 2.

Other Big Ten teams he ranked were Iowa (No. 16), Minnesota (No. 22) and Wisconsin (No. 24). As you can now see, Young controversially left the Wolverines off his preseason top 25, which isn’t unusual for Young who likes to ruffle some feathers.

Michigan State football listed in Lindy’s preseason top 25

Michigan State cracked Lindy’s preseason top 25 for the upcoming college football season

Michigan State cracked Lindy’s preseason top 25 for the upcoming college football season.

The preseason poll from Lindy’s was recently released, and the Spartans were one of the 25 teams to make the list. Michigan State came in at No. 20 on the list — which is rather low compared to similar preseason polls coming out.

Here’s what was written about the Spartans:

“The Spartans piled up players in the transfer portal and hope veteran leadership on offense can help replace the production of Doak Walker winner Kenneth Walker and his obvious impact in the ground game. Three new starters along the offensive line might be concerning. The secondary was college football’s worst in 2021, so improvements needed there are obvious as well.”

Other Big Ten teams listed in Lindy’s preseason poll include Ohio State (No. 2), Michigan (No. 6) and Wisconsin (No. 16).
