MSU football included in ‘AP Top 25’s greatest programs ever’ rankings

Michigan State football is one of the all-time top 25 programs, according to the Associated Press

Michigan State football is one of the all-time top 25 programs, according to the Associated Press (AP).

College Football News developed a formula that compiles the top 25 greatest programs in college football history based on the final AP Top 25 polls since 1936. That formula spit out a list of 25 teams, which included Michigan State.

The Spartans came in at No. 19 in the all-time rankings, which is fifth in the current Big Ten and seventh in the future Big Ten. The current Big Ten teams ahead of Michigan State were Ohio State (No. 2), Michigan (No. 4), Nebraska (No. 7) and Penn State (No. 9).

RJ Young of Fox Sports lists MSU in top 10, second-highest Big Ten team in preseason rankings

There aren’t many out there as high on the Spartans entering the 2022 season as RJ Young of FOX Sports

There aren’t many out there as high on the Spartans entering the 2022 season as RJ Young of Fox Sports.

Young released on Sunday his preseason top 25, which had the Spartans as the second-highest team in the Big Ten. Michigan State landed at No. 7 in his preseason rankings behind only Ohio State from the Big Ten at No. 2.

Other Big Ten teams he ranked were Iowa (No. 16), Minnesota (No. 22) and Wisconsin (No. 24). As you can now see, Young controversially left the Wolverines off his preseason top 25, which isn’t unusual for Young who likes to ruffle some feathers.

Michigan State football listed in Lindy’s preseason top 25

Michigan State cracked Lindy’s preseason top 25 for the upcoming college football season

Michigan State cracked Lindy’s preseason top 25 for the upcoming college football season.

The preseason poll from Lindy’s was recently released, and the Spartans were one of the 25 teams to make the list. Michigan State came in at No. 20 on the list — which is rather low compared to similar preseason polls coming out.

Here’s what was written about the Spartans:

“The Spartans piled up players in the transfer portal and hope veteran leadership on offense can help replace the production of Doak Walker winner Kenneth Walker and his obvious impact in the ground game. Three new starters along the offensive line might be concerning. The secondary was college football’s worst in 2021, so improvements needed there are obvious as well.”

Other Big Ten teams listed in Lindy’s preseason poll include Ohio State (No. 2), Michigan (No. 6) and Wisconsin (No. 16).

Spartans listed just outside top 10 in updated 2022 rankings from FOX Sports

Michigan State football is considered one of the top 12 teams in the country, according to FOX Sports

Michigan State football is considered one of the top 12 teams in the country, according to FOX Sports.

FOX Sports released a batch of too early rankings this past week, which found the Spartans near the top of the country. The Spartans came in at No. 12 on the list that ranked the top 30 teams nationally.

The Spartans were the third-highest Big Ten team — behind only Ohio State (No. 2) and Michigan (No. 4). Three other Big Ten teams also made the list, with Wisconsin (No. 18), Iowa (No. 23) and Penn State (No. 28) also ranked.

These rankings from FOX Sports aligns with a lot of these similar way-too-early rankings for the 2022 college football season. Michigan State is generally somewhere between No. 8 and No. 15 from what I’ve seen this offseason so it’s safe to say there will be high expectations in East Lansing, Mich. this fall.

Michigan State football listed in top 20 of updated USA TODAY 2022 rankings

Erick Smith of USA TODAY is not as high on the 2022 Michigan State Spartans as many of his peers

Erick Smith of USA TODAY is not as high on the 2022 Michigan State Spartans as many of his peers.

Smith released an updated batch of preseason rankings with spring ball wrapped up across the country, and he didn’t have Michigan State as high as some other media outlets. While the Spartans have mostly been found right around the top 10 in other rankings, Smith listed Michigan State at No. 18 in his updated rankings.

Here’s a bit of what Smith had to say about Michigan State:

“The good news for the Spartans defense is that most of its starters are returning. The bad news is that the group ranked last in passing yards allowed (324.8) and 111th in total defense (441.9). Like last year, coach Mel Tucker was aggressive in the transfer portal to address his team’s needs.”

Other Big Ten teams listed in Smith’s rankings are Ohio State (No. 3), Michigan (No. 7), Iowa (No. 11), Wisconsin (No. 15) and Penn State (No. 20).

“The Spartans piled up players in the transfer portal and hope veteran leadership on offense can help replace the production of Doak Walker winner Kenneth Walker and his obvious impact in the ground game.”

Michigan State came in as the third highest-ranked Big Ten team behind only Ohio State (No. 2) and Michigan (No. 9).  Iowa (No. 21) was the lone other Big Ten team to be ranked.
