Spartans left off finalists list for top in-state prospect in 2025 class

Michigan State basketball is apparently no longer in the running for a big-time in-state prospect in the 2025 class

Michigan State basketball is apparently no longer in the running for a big-time in-state prospect in the 2025 class.

Four-star guard Trey McKenney cut his list of schools he’s considering to only three on Thursday, and surprisingly, Michigan State was not on that list. The Spartans were left off McKenney’s finalists’ list, with the three teams making the cut being Michigan, USC and Georgetown.

McKenney is ranked as the No. 24 overall prospect in 247Sports’rankings for the 2025 class. He’s also listed as the No. 1 player from Michigan in the class.

Michigan State had appeared in the mix for McKenney, with some considering the Spartans the favorites to land his commitment. So McKenney leaving Michigan State off his finalists’ list certainly raised some eyebrows on Thursday. Michigan State will now need to respond elsewhere as the Spartans are still looking for their first commitment in the 2025 class.

Add Jalen Haralson to the long list of big-time recruits Michigan State basketball fell just short of landing.

Five-star shooting guard Jalen Haralson announced his college decision on Wednesday evening, and it was unfortunately not Michigan State. Haralson committed to Notre Dame over the Spartans and Indiana.

Haralson ranks as the No. 2 small forward and No. 13 overall prospect in 247Sports’ composite rankings for the 2025 class. He’s from La Porte, Ind. and is ranked as the No. 1 player from Indiana.

Michigan State was considered in the thick of it for Haralson up until the final minutes. However, it sounds like he was always leaning towards the Fighting Irish and that’s who won his commitment in the end.
