The morning after Jaguars’ third preseason loss

The #Jaguars lost a preseason heartbreaker to the #Steelers and will need to get their act together next week against the #Falcons

Losing football isn’t much fun to watch, but with a squad of young talent at their disposal, the Jacksonville Jaguars did their best to keep their fans entertained as they lost their third consecutive preseason game. Their second and third stringers showed signs of life in the second half that were squandered by an E.J. Perry interception late in the fourth quarter that doomed the team to yet another losing effort.

While the Jaguars are rebuilding, struggles are to be expected, but they sure are frustrating for fans who just want to see their team win. Here are some insights from the third preseason loss that might shed some light on where Jacksonville stands with just one more exhibition before the regular season:

The morning after a Chiefs Week 17 loss

Our latest morning after column takes a look at the #Chiefs’ third-and-27 decision, Joe Thuney and the NFL’s officiating problem.

The early 3-4 skid by the Kansas City Chiefs left them no room for error, and in Week 17 against the Cincinnati Bengals, they felt the full weight of that.

The 34-31 loss in Cincinnati meant the end of the eight-game winning streak that got them to this point, but it also meant that Kansas City no longer held the No. 1 seed in the AFC. The Tennessee Titans now lay claim to the lone first-round bye and just like that, the Chiefs no longer control their own playoff destiny as it relates to a bye week.

If Kansas City takes care of business in Denver in Week 18, they’ll lock up the No. 2 seed at a minimum. Should they lose to the Broncos they could drop down all the way to the No. 4 seed. In years past, getting the No. 2 seed wouldn’t matter so much. However, with the expanded playoff system it makes all the difference. Yes, the No. 2 seed will still amount to a minimum of two home playoff games, but losing the week off to recuperate and recover is a big deal.

In this week’s morning after column, we take a look at what went into Steve Spagnuolo’s decision on the infamous third-and-27 call. We also marvel at Joe Thuney and discuss the NFL’s officiating problem.

The morning after a Chiefs Week 2 loss

In our latest morning after column, we take a look at what went wrong for the #Chiefs’ defense against the #Ravens.

There are no moral victories in the NFL.

Even with just a one-point loss in Week 2, it’s back to the drawing board for the Kansas City Chiefs. A listless game on the defensive side of the ball, combined with turnovers at the most inopportune times on offense has us digesting our first loss of the 2021 season with our morning cup of coffee.

In today’s morning after column, we take a look at the Chiefs’ postgame comments on the defense in an effort to figure out what went wrong, we also take a look at the run game and the tendency to rush on first down and talk about the lack of killer instinct on both sides of the ball.

The Morning After: This is fun… but let’s finish this off, Bills

The Morning After the Buffalo Bills top the New England Patriots in Week 16 on Monday Night Football.

The Buffalo Bills demolished the New England Patriots.

Destroyed, battered, thrashed … “assault.” or whatever word you (or Adam Schefter that one time) might want to use, it happened on Monday Night Football with everyone watching. Buffalo won 38-9 over the Pats… and boy, it felt good.

Even despite priding oneself on analyzing the Bills (12-3) subjectively, watching that unfold was a pleasant sight to see. It’s not to say that this needs a grain of salt or anything.

The Bills have won five-straight games by 10-plus points. Without a Hail Mary prayer of a pass, the streak would be even longer, too. While this is very, very fun, we’re here to remind you to not dance on anyone’s grave just yet.

Yes, the Jets lost the No. 1 pick in recent weeks. The Dolphins themselves might now put their playoff hopes on the line, in Buffalo, and trust Ryan Fitzpatrick to get the job done. We saw such a scenario play out a few years ago while Fitz was with Gang Green, and regardless, a Week 17 QB controversy don’t exactly make one believe that the team in South Beach is setup to succeed for the long-term just yet.

And of course, there’s the Patriots. That looked like a team getting a reality check from hell last night. Pushing their face in the snow after this one will feel all too good. But don’t go overboard.

Take the right approach, in fact, take the one that Sean McDermott is sending his team right now: They’ve won nothing yet.

OK, they did win the AFC East, but for Buffalo truly to even the score, that discussion starts and ends with the Lombardi Trophy. This could be the year, but the NFL is such a week-to-week league. We’ve seen it from the Bills themselves throughout just this year.

Remember how Josh Allen was the league MVP after four games? Then couldn’t even sniff Russell Wilson’s jock in that race? Only for him to beat Russ a few weeks later and now vault himself up the QB rankings to make talking heads on television even call him the MVP again?

And that’s only one guy on the Bills, let alone all the other storylines and narratives following them around week-to-week.

Enjoy this, but the Bills haven’t won anything. The Chiefs are in their way… and heck, let us serve ourselves a piece of humble pie first and foremost.

The Chiefs are in the way? Kansas City is still several weeks away. Teams like the Titans, who’ve beat Buffalo this year, or the Ravens, who have a reigning NFL MVP on their roster, could sit in the way first. While the Bills walk through most parks (or stadiums) and grab a big win in recent weeks, they call the playoffs a whole new ball game for a reason.

Rejoice, yes… point to the scoreboard shining bright at Gillette Stadium right now, hell yes. But don’t just ignore what’s in the corner of your eye when doing so. Several of those Super Bowl banners hanging nice and high in Foxborough and it sure feels like it’s time for one in Buffalo.

The Chiefs needed a win and they got a win. It wasn’t the prettiest win, but I think it was an important one nonetheless. Not because of the playoff implications necessarily, but to see the defense step up into the driver seat and slam the door shut on this game. They waited until the last minute to do it, but they still did it. They allowed no points scored on four consecutive punts by the struggling Chiefs’ offense.

Sometimes you’re not going to fire on all cylinders and have each phase of the game working right. To be able to grind out a win relying on a unit that has really failed to provide much spark all season, well, it gives new life to this team down the stretch. The best part is they get to relish in it for a week before heading back to Arrowhead Stadium to face the Oakland Raiders.

It wasn’t the dominant win that Chiefs’ fans wanted over a division rival, but this was a great win for the Chiefs as they go into their bye week. The offense had a rough game, but it was enough to get the job done. I think the offense should be given a break because so many times the offense has had to carry the defense the last two seasons. I know the offense isn’t going to be the reason why we lose when the playoffs start, so it’s ok that they had a bad game and had to rely on the defense.

The defense maybe had their best game of the season forcing Philip Rivers to throw four interceptions. I’m not sold that it’s going to last. We thought that the defense turned around after the Vikings game, so they are going to have to perform for a couple more games before I get excited about that group.

I did like what Frank Clark was able to do though. Clark was dominant and I think he is finally getting over his neck injury and isn’t playing “soft” anymore. I am really excited to see if he can do it again against the Raiders after the bye.

Man, that was a stressful game. It seems like that is always the outcome when the Chiefs and Chargers play against each other. Clearly there were issues in that game on both sides of the ball, but for now, I’m just looking at the positives.

Patrick Mahomes may not have lit up the stat sheet in the passing game, but he certainly looked like the Mahomes of 2018 with his legs. He moved around with confidence in the backfield and when the play broke down in key situations, he managed to break off some big runs to keep drives alive in crucial spots.

Defensively it was the kind of game I wanted to see. Spagnuolo looked like he understood exactly where their strength was in this matchup, and that was pressuring Rivers. On several plays, you could see that he went with heavy blitz packages basically forcing Rivers to throw the ball quick. Sometimes it worked in his favor for some big plays, but overall it paid off with four interceptions on the day. I love the high risk-high reward style of defense and cant wait to see how they choose to play after the bye week.

I have to give the Chiefs credit for winning an ugly game. Unfortunately, the same issues are lingering over them. Kansas City is committing too many penalties, have issues with ball security and cannot put away teams in the fourth quarter. Four straight punts in a one-possession game are inexcusable. Because of these issues, I still have my doubts as to whether the Chiefs can get to the Super Bowl. I cannot dismiss them, however, because there is still plenty of time left in the season to take things up a notch.

The bye week has truly arrived at the perfect time and could give not only the players a much need rest but the coaching staff the opportunity to figure out solutions to the issues holding this team back.

How about those Chiefs? After being much maligned for allowing an average of 148 yards per game on the ground, Kansas City’s defenders held the Chargers to 93 total yards rushing. Digging deeper, Kansas City went 3-1 versus the Chargers, Vikings, Packers and Broncos giving up an average of 94.5 rushing yards per game. It seems they have a better shot at winning when they can limit the ground game.

The needle is absolutely pointing up for this Chiefs defense who tonight added interceptions to the menu taking away four from the Chargers, and it could’ve been more if Kansas City didn’t gift Philip Rivers a few drops. Enjoy the win and the bye Chiefs Kingdom. We’ll see you in two weeks at Arrowhead Stadium for Raiders Week. Go Chiefs!

This has to be one of the most frustrating Chiefs’ teams in recent memory. One week the defense is playing solid mistake-free football, the next week the special teams are the saviors of the game, another week the offense looks unstoppable. For whatever reason, they can’t seem to have all three of these things happen at the same time. It’s a full-on failure to play complementary football and it’s sapping the life out of this team and the fanbase.

I don’t know if Kansas City got caught looking ahead to the showdown in Mexico City for Week 11, but they fumbled away a golden opportunity against the Titans. They let a winnable game slip out of their grasp and now it leaves little room for error down the stretch. The Raiders are closing in on them and they still must travel to Foxboro and play the Patriots.

Look at the strength of win and strength of schedule for the Chiefs and you can tell this is still a really good football team. They just need to get out of their own way and rally together to find some consistent success throughout all phases.

Mitch Carney

The Chiefs just can’t get a break. Patrick Mahomes returns and has a fantastic game throwing three touchdowns for over 400 yards, but due to bad special teams performance and some poor run defense, he just wasn’t able to get the job done. It’s crazy to think that he did everything right including getting the Chiefs into field goal range to tie the game, but a blocked kick would end it.

I still believe that the Chiefs are a good team and have a good chance to win the Super Bowl, but they need to fix the sloppy play. I personally can’t wait until the bye week, so that the Chiefs can finally get everyone healthy and just prepare for the final stretch before the playoffs.

Max Ramsey

Patrick Mahomes came back from his injury this week, but unfortunately so did the early season issues that plagued the Chiefs. The defense was burned on the run on several occasions, but the biggest issue with the team in this game was the special team’s units. You can bring up the offense being unable to finish drives, you can bring up the explosive plays allowed by the defense, but the special teams for the Chiefs had some sloppy returns and two late botched field goal attempts late.

It’s going to be tough to come away from this game with any positives, but clearly, the concerns people had about Mahomes coming back early were proved to be unnecessary as Mahomes did some work on the field in this game. This was a game they should have won, however, and it will be hard for the team to get over this week. All we can do is hope that they move on and fix the issues in time for the Chargers game.

This was pretty much the definition of an inexcusable loss. I’ve been consistent in saying that the Chiefs just need to get healthy to get back to being a Super Bowl contender, but I’m less sure of that now. I would have expected the Chiefs to win this game with Matt Moore at quarterback.

To squander this game away despite having Patrick Mahomes back, who looked very healthy, throwing for 446 yards and three touchdowns, is embarrassing. The team is openly admitting its effort isn’t what it should be. The Chiefs are playing horrible special teams despite supposedly having a great ST coordinator. Oh, and then a head coach who consistently retraces his mistakes since the first year on the job.

The Chiefs will bounce back from this. I believe they’ll win the AFC West and perhaps win a playoff game. What reason do we have, however, to believe that this season is going to end any differently than every other season under Andy Reid? Blowing double-digit leads and losing close games due to sloppy, undisciplined football is getting really old.

Vinciane Ngomsi

Well, that was a disappointing performance by the Chiefs. After dominating nearly the entire game, they absolutely collapsed in the final minutes and now add another loss on the season. I wish I could say it’s quite shocking, but it’s reminiscent of the Chiefs of seasons past. With all due respect to Andy Reid, he’s got to be much better at clock management. Calling a timeout before a two-point conversion to essentially hand the Tennessee Titans a win is perhaps the most creative avenue he has used to bottle a game.

At this point, it’s unclear where the Chiefs go from here. Not sure if it’s a roster concern or a managerial issue, but this isn’t the kind of team ready to battle New England in a few weeks. This isn’t even a team that could win a Wild Card game in the playoffs.

With so many healthy components, it confuses me how they don’t all mesh together. It’s even more frustrating because Kansas City was supposed to build off of last year, but it seems like they’re just regressing further and further.

In what should have been a hard-fought well-earned road victory for the Kansas City Chiefs, this writer found himself having to take some time as he walked away from Nissan Stadium to breathe and reflect. Why? Because our beloved Chiefs found a way to waste a 446 yard 3 touchdown effort by the reigning MVP. They snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.

Two major missed calls greatly affected the outcome of this game. First, on a long Derrick Henry touchdown run, Charvarius Ward was held for about 15 yards rushing down the field or very likely would have tripped up the large back. A holding call on that play changes things quite a bit. Then, near the end of the game, the Chiefs defense allowed Tannehill to drive the Titans down the field and score quickly, adding a two-point conversion to take a three-point lead. Within a few plays, Mahomes had KC in field-goal range but a Titans player jumped offsides and blocked the kick. There was a flag, people came out on the field. Ultimately, the officials explained nothing and they announced, Titans Win over the PA.

The fatal error by the Chiefs was calling a pass on third-and-2 in the red zone. You have to run the ball and get the first down. Some offensive linemen were knicked up but hey, next man up. If you get the first down there you can continue to bleed the clock and get out of the stadium with the win. It’s not rocket science, it’s football. And sometimes, I think the offensive geniuses of the league overthink things.
