Montreal Canadiens at Toronto Maple Leafs odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Wednesday’s Montreal Canadiens at Toronto Maple Leafs odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Montreal Canadiens and the Toronto Maple Leafs open the 2023-24 National Hockey League regular season Wednesday at Scotiabank Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Canadiens vs. Maple Leafs odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

The Canadiens will have a new look after parting with plenty of veterans, while re-signing their younger core. The defense looks to be a weak spot, and Jake Allen and Sam Montembeault figure to guard the cage, with Carey Price no longer in the crease.

The Maple Leafs made some big moves to strengthen the team, adding Tyler Bertuzzi to the top scoring line, while bringing in Max Domi, Martin Jones, John Klingberg and Ryan Reaves to provide depth across the board.

Canadiens at Maple Leafs projected goalies

Jake Allen (15-24-3, 3.55 GAA, .891 SV%, 1 SO – 2022-23) vs. Ilya Samsonov (27-10-5, 2.33 GAA, .919 SV% , 4 SO)

Allen will get 1st crack at the cage in the opener, and the Leafs might be licking their chops to get at him. The veteran was just 1-1-0 with a 4.01 GAA and .890 SV% in 2 starts against the Leafs last season, including a 5-1 loss on Feb. 18, allowing 5 goals on 41 shots.

Samsonov resurrected his career last season in T-Dot after getting jettisoned by the Capitals. He went 19-3-0 with a 1.98 GAA and .927 SV% with 2 SO in 23 games at home last season, and he went 1-0-1 with a 1.99 GAA and .923 SV% in 2 starts against the Habs.

Canadiens at Maple Leafs picks and predictions

Prediction

Maple Leafs 5, Canadiens 2

Moneyline

The Maple Leafs (-300) will cost you 3 times your potential return, and that’s just too risky, especially in the opener.

Toronto “should” be able to easily push past an undermanned Montreal team, but that isn’t always the case when these Original 6 rivals get together. While the Habs have dropped 4 straight in Toronto, and the home team is 8-0 in the past 8 meetings overall, the Leafs are just too risky.

The Habs actually hold a 6-4 advantage in the previous 10 meetings, too, despite a perceived lack of talent compared to the higher-priced Leafs.

AVOID.

Puck line/Against the spread

The MAPLE LEAFS -1.5 (-120) are a better value laying the goal and a half on the puck line.

In Toronto’s 2 home games against Montreal last season, it outscored the Habs by a 12-2 count, easily covering the puck line in a pair of games as a heavy favorite. Still, be careful, as a favorite of -200 or greater last season, Toronto was just 2-2 straight up against Montreal, so go lightly.

Over/Under

OVER 6.5 (-120) is also worth playing lightly, but be careful. Allen is very giving when it comes to facing the Leafs, especially in Toronto.

Be careful, though, as the Habs have a decent top scoring line, but things drop off precipitously as you go down the lines.

The Under is also 4-1-1 in the past 6 meetings, and 7-2-1 in the past 10 in the series, although Toronto took care of the Over on its own in the most recent meeting to close out last regular season.

Montreal Canadiens at Toronto Maple Leafs odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Wednesday’s Montreal Canadiens at Toronto Maple Leafs odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs open their 2021-22 NHL regular seasons Wednesday at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Canadiens vs. Maple Leafs odds and lines, and make our expert NHL picks, predictions and bets.

The Canadiens look to build upon their magical postseason run that took them to the Stanley Cup Final and within a whisker of a championship. On the way to that Finals appearance, they dispatched of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The Leafs are looking to exact a little revenge after blowing a 3-1 series lead, eventually losing in seven games to the Habs in the first round. Toronto went 7-2-1 in 10 meetings during the regular season against Montreal.

Canadiens at Maple Leafs projected goalies

Jake Allen (11-12-0, 2.68 GAA, .907 SV%) vs. Jack Campbell (17-3-0, 2.15 GAA, .921 SV%)

Allen will begin the season in between the pipes with Carey Price away from the team and in the NHL/NHL Players’ Association joint player assistance program. Allen will start, with Samuel Montembeault as the primary backup and Cayden Primeau available when needed.

Campbell fared well against the Habs in the regular season, going 4-1-1 with a 2.16 GAA and .918 SV% in six starts. He also won seven of his eight starts at Scotiabank Arena overall during the regular season.

Canadiens at Maple Leafs odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Maple Leafs 4, Canadiens 3

Money line

The MAPLE LEAFS (-180) have a bit of a high number for my liking, as I think this is going to be a close game, even with Price unavailable to the Canadiens (+145). Allen is a veteran more than capable of helping the visitors steady the ship.

Against the spread

CANADIENS +1.5 (-160) dashed the dreams of the Maple Leafs -1.5 (+125) yet again in the playoffs. Despite the fact Phillip Danault, Jesperi Kotkaniemi, Corey Perry, Eric Staal and Tomas Tatar have changed postal codes and are no longer part of the team with a deep playoff run, the Habs have enough depth to keep the Leafs close.

Over/Under

OVER 5.5 (-135) is a strong play. In the first two NHL games Tuesday we saw an average of 7.5 total goals per game, and we should see plenty here, too. Allen is a decent veteran, but he will give up plenty to the high-octane Leafs offense. And Campbell will also yield his fair share to the pesky Habs.

Montreal Canadiens at Toronto Maple Leafs Game 7 odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Monday’s Montreal Canadiens at Toronto Maple Leafs Game 7 odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs play Game 7 of their Stanley Cup Playoffs first-round series Monday. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET at Scotiabank Arena. Below, we analyze the Canadiens-Maple Leafs odds and lines, with NHL picks and predictions.

The Canadiens totaled just four goals scored through the first four games and trailed 3-1 in the best-of-7 series. They registered a total of seven goals over the previous two outings, both overtime victories, squaring the series for this decisive Game 7.

The Maple Leafs are feeling the pressure as they look for their first playoff series win since 2004. One of the biggest reasons Toronto is in that old familiar place is the struggles of C Auston Matthews (one goal) and RW Mitch Marner (no goals).

Canadiens at Maple Leafs: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 7:18 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Canadiens +170 (bet $100 to win $170) | Maple Leafs -200 (bet $200 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Canadiens +1.5 (-155) | Maple Leafs -1.5 (+125)
  • Over/Under: 5.5 (O: +115| U: -140)

Canadiens at Maple Leafs: Projected starting goalies

Carey Price (12-7-5, 2.64 GAA, .901 SV%, 1 SO) vs. Jack Campbell (17-3-2, 2.15 GAA, .921 SV%, 2 SO)

Price started out with three losses across his first four outings of this series, but he has allowed a total of just one goal to Matthews/Marner, and the veteran has his team positioned to steal this series.

Campbell blanked the Habs in Game 4, and he appeared to be on his way to becoming the first goaltender to win a series for Toronto since Ed Belfour led the Leafs past the Ottawa Senators in seven games in 2004. That’s also the last time two Canadians teams played in a decisive Game 7.

Canadiens at Maple Leafs: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Maple Leafs 3, Canadiens 1

Money line (ML)

The Maple Leafs (-200) will cost you two times your potential return, and there is no way you can do that. If anything, based on the perennial collapse of the Leafs, the Canadiens (+170) are worth playing.

AVOID.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

The MAPLE LEAFS -1.5 (+125) can’t really do this again, can they? They have found new ways to lose on a regular basis over the years, and no one expected them to be in this position after four games. But here they are fighting for their playoff lives. The provincial government of Ontario struck down the potential of fans attending Game 7, so the Leafs will have to do it all on their own. Still, you have to think Matthews, Marner and company come alive.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 5.5 (-140) is the lean here. The Habs have struggled offensively in this series as Campbell has certainly done his job. The Leafs haven’t lit the world afire, either. This has the potential to be a very low-scoring affair.

Montreal Canadiens at Toronto Maple Leafs Game 5 odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Thursday’s Montreal Canadiens at Toronto Maple Leafs Game 5 odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs play Game 5 of their Stanley Cup Playoffs first-round series Thursday. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET at Scotiabank Arena. Below, we analyze the Canadiens-Maple Leafs odds and lines, with NHL picks and predictions.

The Canadiens posted a 2-1 victory in this venue in Game 1, but they have dropped three straight in the series. The Habs have managed a total of just four goals of support for G Carey Price through four games.

The Maple Leafs dropped the series opener but have outscored the Canadiens 12-4 in the series, with the Under connecting in three of four games.

  • Money line: Canadiens +200 (bet $100 to win $200) | Maple Leafs -250 (bet $250 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Canadiens +1.5 (-130) | Maple Leafs -1.5 (+105)
  • Over/Under: 5.5 (O: +105 | U: -130)

Canadiens at Maple Leafs: Projected starting goalies

Carey Price (12-7-5, 2.64 GAA, .901 SV%, 1 SO) vs. Jack Campbell (17-3-2, 2.15 GAA, .921 SV%, 2 SO)

Price is 1-3 in this series, but he has a solid 2.58 GAA and .920 SV% in his four starts while allowing 3 or fewer goals in three of the four outings. Unfortunately for Price, the offense has averaged just 1.0 goals per game to support him.

Campbell allowed 2 goals on 30 shots in Game 1 and took the loss in his first-ever playoff start. He hasn’t lost since, rattling off three consecutive victories while allowing 2 total goals. Campbell turned aside all 32 shots he faced in Game 4 in Montreal for his first career playoff shutout.

Canadiens at Maple Leafs: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Maple Leafs 3, Canadiens 2

Money line (ML)

The Maple Leafs (-250) are a little on the expensive side, and you cannot risk two and a half times your potential return, even if it looks impossible to lose. You’re still backing a team that hasn’t won a playoff series since 2004, and a team that hasn’t won the Stanley Cup since 1967.

AVOID.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

The CANADIENS +1.5 (-130) are worth a look, as Montreal still hasn’t realized its offensive potential yet, and they have to score eventually, right?

Campbell has been an amazing story, and he has been very good all season but the Habs are making him look like the second coming of Johnny Bower.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 5.5 (-130) is the lean in this one. Price hasn’t been bad, and the Canadiens offense hasn’t been able to solve Campbell.

There’s little reason to believe an offensive shootout is coming. The signs just haven’t been there at any point on either side.

Montreal Canadiens at Toronto Maple Leafs Game 2 odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Saturday’s Montreal Canadiens at Toronto Maple Leafs Game 2 odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs play Game 2 of their Stanley Cup Playoffs first-round series Saturday. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET at Scotiabank Arena. Below, we analyze the Canadiens-Maple Leafs odds and lines, with NHL picks and predictions.

The Canadiens opened the series with a 2-1 victory in Toronto Thursday night. It was the first meeting in the postseason between these two Original Six organizations since 1979.

Not only did the Leafs lose on a Paul Byron shorthanded goal at 12:44 of the third period, but they were forced to deal with the loss of John Tavares to a serious upper-body injury in the first period. He was released from the hospital Friday but is out indefinitely.

Canadiens at Maple Leafs: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 8:10 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Canadiens +155 (bet $100 to win $155) | Maple Leafs -190 (bet $190 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Canadiens +1.5 (-165) | Maple Leafs -1.5 (+135)
  • Over/Under: 5.5 (O: +105 | U: -125)

Canadiens at Maple Leafs: Projected starting goalies

Carey Price (12-7-5, 2.64 GAA, .901 SV%, 1 SO) vs. Jack Campbell (17-3-2, 2.15 GAA, .921 SV%, 2 SO)

Price was tremendous in his first action in a month due to a concussion. He allowed just one goal on 36 shots to help the Habs seize home-ice advantage from the Maple Leafs.

Campbell allowed just two goals on 30 shots in his first career playoff appearance. Unfortunately for Campbell, he was beaten on a shorthanded breakaway late in the third period, and his offense gave him little support.

Special NHL Betting Promotion!

Canadiens at Maple Leafs: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Maple Leafs 3, Canadiens 2

Money line (ML)

The MAPLE LEAFS (-190) are worth a play as they look to bounce back after their Game 1 setback.

Toronto had a couple of days to adjust to the shock of losing Tavares, and it should be able to make the proper adjustments to scratch out a win and grab the split at home.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

The CANADIENS +1.5 (-165) won a low-scoring battle at Scotiabank Arena in Game 1, and they will be able to keep it close in another lower-scoring battle in Game 2.

This won’t end in a 2-0 series lead for Montreal, but they’ll scratch out the puck line win to keep Toronto fans on pins and needles before the series shifts to Montreal.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 5.5 (-125) is the play here, as we saw very little offense and a lot of hitting, backchecking and tremendous goal play. The Tavares injury also hurts the offensive flow for the Leafs, and that will help Under bettors, too.

The Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs play Game 1 of their Stanley Cup Playoffs first-round series Thursday. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET at Scotiabank Arena. Below, we analyze the Canadiens-Maple Leafs odds and lines, with NHL picks and predictions.

The Canadiens meet the Maple Leafs in the playoffs for the first time since 1979. When these teams last played, Toronto head coach Sheldon Keefe wasn’t even alive, and Montreal head coach Dominique Ducharme was six years old.

The Maple Leafs won eight of the last 10 head-to-head meetings at Scotiabank Arena, while the favorite is 23-8 across the past 31 overall in this series.

Carey Price (12-7-5, 2.64 GAA, .901 SV%, 1 SO) vs. Jack Campbell (17-3-2, 2.15 GAA, .921 SV%, 2 SO)

Price makes his return after a month-long absence due to a concussion. He posted a 1-2-1 record, 3.48 GAA and .868 SV% in four games against the Maple Leafs this season.

Campbell will be making his first career playoff start. He was actually a little worse statistically at home, going 7-1-0 with a 2.50 GAA And .907 SV% compared to 10-2-2 with a 1.97 GAA and .928 SV% in 14 road outings.

Canadiens at Maple Leafs: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Canadiens 4, Maple Leafs 3

Money line (ML)

The CANADIENS (+170) are worth a look as moderate underdogs on the road. This game will play more like a neutral-site situation with no fans in the stands. We saw home ice mattered very little in the other series in the North Division, as the Jets beat the Edmonton Oilers in a sterile environment in Game 1. The Habs are a good value for a potential repeat here.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

If you’re not feeling the Habs straight up, CANADIENS +1.5 (-160) isn’t a bad buy on the puck line. While the Leafs have dominated the Habs in recent seasons, I just don’t trust the inexperienced Campbell heading into the postseason.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 5.5 (-115) might be the best play on the board. You have a guy making his first career postseason start in Campbell, and then you have a guy looking to knock off rust after a month-long injury with Price. Look for the offenses to enjoy a nice night.

Montreal Canadiens at Toronto Maple Leafs odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Saturday’s Montreal Canadiens at Toronto Maple Leafs odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The Canadiens were on the short end of a 5-2 loss in Toronto Thursday night, and they have been outscored in each of the past two games for a combined 10-3 effort.

The Maple Leafs bounced back from a 3-2 overtime loss Monday, posting the 5-2 win Thursday night as heavy favorites. The Leafs have won six of the past seven outings, and they haven’t lost in regulation since April 20 in Vancouver.

Jake Allen (11-11-4, 2.62 GAA, .909 SV%) vs. Jack Campbell (16-2-2, 2.11 GAA, .924 SV%, 2 SO)

Allen replaced Cayden Primeau in Thursday’s game, allowing just one goal on 20 shots in his 40 minutes. He has had mixed results against the Leafs this season, going 2-2-0 with a 2.56 GAA and .911 SV% in four starts and one relief appearance against Toronto.

Campbell allowed two goals on 21 shots in Thursday’s win over the Canadiens, and he has not lost in regulation in seven straight outings since April 15 against the Winnipeg Jets.

Canadiens at Maple Leafs: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Maple Leafs 4, Canadiens 1

Money line (ML)

The Maple Leafs (-225) will cost you more than two times your potential return, and while they’re a good bet to top the skidding Canadiens (+185), that’s a rather big price. Over the long haul it’s not a good idea to bet heavy favorites like that on a regular basis.

AVOID.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

The MAPLE LEAFS -1.5 (+115) are the play on the puck line. They trounced the Habs by three Thursday, and each of Toronto’s past six victories since April 22 have been by two or more goals. So if you like the Leafs to win, play them on the puck line.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 6 (-120) is the lean here, as Campbell hasn’t been very giving, and the Canadiens offense has been stumbling. The Under is 4-1-1 across the past six for the Leafs, too, allowing a total of nine goals during the stretch.

Montreal Canadiens at Toronto Maple Leafs odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Thursday’s Montreal Canadiens at Toronto Maple Leafs odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The Montreal Canadiens (24-19-9) play the first part of a two-game set on the road against the Toronto Maple Leafs (33-13-6) Thursday. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET at Scotiabank Arena. Below, we analyze the Canadiens-Maple Leafs odds and lines, with NHL picks and predictions.

The Canadiens were dusted 5-1 in Canada’s capital city by the Ottawa Senators Wednesday, as they couldn’t solve G Anton Forsberg. That snapped a three-game winning streak, including a 3-2 overtime win against Toronto at home Monday.

The Maple Leafs haven’t played since Monday’s OT loss. They’ll be glad to be back on home ice, as they swept a two-game set April 29-May 1 against the Vancouver Canucks by a combined 9-2 score.

Canadiens at Maple Leafs: Projected starting goalies

Cayden Primeau (1-1-0, 2.96 GAA, .893 SV%) vs. Jack Campbell (15-2-2, 2.11 GAA, .925 SV%, 2 SO)

Primeau will be making his career-high third start of the season, and his first appearance against the rival Leafs. He is coming off a 3-2 overtime victory last Saturday against the Senators. Primeau allowed two goals on 23 shots.

Campbell was on the short end of that 3-2 OT setback against the Canadiens Monday, and it snapped a four-game win streak. He hasn’t lost in regulation in the previous six starts since a disastrous outing April 15 against the Winnipeg Jets.

Canadiens at Maple Leafs: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Maple Leafs 4, Canadiens 1

Money line (ML)

The MAPLE LEAFS (-190) are just a little more expensive than I usually prefer, but they’re a great play on home ice against a Canadiens team which was tuned up by the lowly Sens the night before.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

The MAPLE LEAFS -1.5 (+130) are a better value on the puck line. They’re back on home ice, where they pounded the Canucks twice by 3 or more goals last week and each of their past five victories were by 2 or more goals.

Combine that with the Canadiens coming off a 4-goal loss in the front end of a back-to-back, and it’s a perfect storm for TO.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 6 (-115) is worth a small-unit play. The Under is 4-0-1 in the previous five for the Buds and 4-2 in the past six for the Habs. It is 3-0-1 in the previous four meetings between these Original Six rivals, too.

Montreal Canadiens at Toronto Maple Leafs odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Saturday’s Montreal Canadiens at Toronto Maple Leafs NHL odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The Toronto Maple Leafs (11-2-1) host the Montreal Canadiens (8-4-2) at Scotiabank Arena Saturday for the third installment of 2021 for this rivalry series. Puck drop will be at 7 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze the Canadiens-Maple Leafs NHL odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

The Maple Leafs topped the Canadiens 5-4 in overtime in the season opener for both teams and proved it was no fluke with a 4-2 win in Montreal Wednesday.

Toronto has won four straight games in regulation to remain atop the all-Canadian North Division. Montreal took a 3-0 loss against the Edmonton Oilers Thursday for its third loss in its last four games.

Canadiens at Maple Leafs: Projected starting goalies

Carey Price (4-2-2, .896 SV%, 2.84 GAA) vs. Frederik Andersen (9-2-1, .908 SV%, 2.59 GAA)

Price has suffered back-to-back losses to the Maple Leafs and Ottawa Senators. He allowed 3 goals in each of those games on a total of just 45 shots on goal. He had previously won three straight games, but he gave up 5 goals on 34 shots in the season opener against the Leafs.

Andersen has been in net for four straight wins by the Leafs, and he has backstopped them to at least one point in eight consecutive games. He stopped 28 of 32 shots in the season-opening overtime win, and he stopped 33 of 35 shots against Montreal Wednesday.

Canadiens at Maple Leafs: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Canadiens 4, Maple Leafs 2

Money line (ML)

Back the CANADIENS (+120) as they attempt to flip the script from Wednesday’s head-to-head clash. They were slight favorites at home for that contest, but the odds flipped for the second meeting of the week.

Montreal registered 62.2% of the total 5-on-5 shot attempts (including blocked and missed shots) and 57.89% of the scoring chances at full strength Wednesday. Toronto won both of those battles in the first meeting this season but by much narrower margins.

Both teams were 0-for-2 on the power play Wednesday, but the Leafs have a significant edge with the man advantage for the season scoring at a fourth-ranked 34.88% clip. The Canadiens’ key to victory will be avoiding penalty trouble.

Against the spread (ATS)

There’s too much risk to take the Canadiens +1.5 (-225) for the goal of insurance on the puck line and the alternate line of Canadiens -1.5 (+290) is a little too bold.

The Leafs lead the season series 2-0 and have outscored the Canadiens 9-6. The Habs won each of the previous four meetings, but three of those were decided by single-goal margins.

Over/Under (O/U)

Take the UNDER 6.5 (-110) with both No. 1 starters rested coming into Saturday. Defensive play improved considerably from the season opener to Wednesday’s meeting, and play should continue to tighten up atop the North Division.
