Golf course near Pebble Beach that Jim Nantz called ‘spectacular’ has sold for almost $10 million

The Jack Nicklaus-designed track is a 6,673-yard, par-71 golf course, which carries a 73.7 course rating and a slope of 143.

A private golf club that sits less than 15 miles from Pebble Beach along the Monterey Peninsula was sold for nearly $10 million, according to a story in the Monterey Herald.

The Club at Pasadera was purchased from a group of local investors by Concert Golf Partners. The Jack Nicklaus-designed track is a 6,673-yard, par-71 golf course, which carries a 73.7 course rating and a slope of 143.

CBS Sports broadcaster Jim Nantz, who purchased a home in the area more than a decade ago, had high praise for the course.

“The Club at Pasadera is one of the underrated gems of California golf,” said Nantz. “The club and course are absolutely spectacular.”

This marks the first California purchase for the Florida-based Concert Golf Partners, which now owns 33 properties, including The Club at Longview in Charlotte, N.C.; The Club at Renaissance in Ft. Myers, Florida; White Manor Country Club in Philadelphia; and The Muttontown Club on Long Island, N.Y.

“We’re thrilled to welcome The Club at Pasadera, a perfectly crafted golf course and premier club located in one of golf’s elite global destinations, into the Concert Golf family,” said Concert Golf Partners Senior Vice President Jordan Peace. “Our commitment to safeguarding the rich heritage of this club aligns seamlessly with our overarching mission.”

Here’s more from the Herald:

The Club at Pasadera golf course and country club is the centerpiece of the 565-acre, 250-home Pasadera Community. It opened in 2000 at a cost of $42 million, and was bought 10 years later by HNA Group, a Chinese conglomerate, for about $7.5 million after the original owners, Pasadera Country Club, LLC., filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. It had been in discussions with the Trump Organization about a possible sale, though the deal fell through in December 2008 over loan conditions and the threat of lawsuits. In late 2018, a group of local investors purchased Nicklaus Club Monterey for about $3.2 million and renamed it The Club at Pasadera.

Photos of every hole at Pebble Beach Golf Links for 2023 U.S. Women’s Open

Can you even take a bad photo at Pebble Beach?

Pebble Beach Golf Links is one of the most photographic golf courses in the world. All that salt water and sunshine have such an effect.

Nos. 7, 8, 17 and 18 always seem to steal much of the spotlight, and rightfully so. They’re gorgeous to stare at, especially when the sun sinks low and the golden hour pops. But that doesn’t mean they’re the only out there on the Monterey Peninsula worth a photog’s time.

Golfweek’s Best course rankings support the greatness of the place. Pebble Beach Golf Links – the namesake of Pebble Beach Resorts –  ranks No. 10 on Golfweek’s Best list of classic courses in the U.S., the highest public-access course in that ranking. It’s also No. 1 in California on the list for best public-access courses in each state and No. 1 again on the list for top resort courses in the U.S.

Photos: 2023 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am on the Monterey Peninsula

The views are endless.

It’s time for one of the most picturesque stops on the PGA Tour, the 2023 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

Pebble Beach Golf Links is an iconic venue with incredible views of the Pacific Ocean and Monterey Peninsula, but neighboring Spyglass Hill Golf Course and Monterey Peninsula Country Club’s Shore Course, which are also used in this week’s event, have spectacular scenery themselves.

[afflinkbutton text=”Book your trip to Pebble Beach today” link=”https://www.golfbreaks.com/en-us/vacations/monterey/pebble-beach-golf-links/?cid=999740052&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=golfweek&utm_campaign=pgat_tournament_courses_q3_22_gw”]

The field of 156 professionals will partner with am amateur, playing 18 holes on each course the first three days. There will be a cut before the final round, which will be contested at Pebble Beach.

Tom Hoge won the event last year, beating 2017 champ and runner-up Jordan Spieth by two shots.

Here’s a look at the best photos from the 2023 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

Check the yardage book: Pebble Beach Golf Links for the 2023 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am on the PGA Tour

StrackaLine offers hole-by-hole maps for the main course in the 2023 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

Pebble Beach Golf Links in California – the main course to be used in the 2023 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am – originally was designed by amateur architects Douglas Grant and Jack Neville and opened in 1919. The famed layout on cliffs above Stillwater Cove and the Pacific Ocean has seen many renovations over the decades, including work done by William Herbert Fowler, Alister MacKenzie, H. Chandler Egan, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and others.

Pebble Beach Golf Links is one of three courses to host the Pro-Am. Also in play for the first three rounds will be Monterey Peninsula Country Club’s Shore Course redesigned by Mike Strantz and Spyglass Hill Golf Club designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. Each player has one round on each of the three courses in the first three rounds before the cut, then the final round will be at Pebble Beach Golf Links.

Combined, the threesome of courses are among the best of the PGA Tour’s West Coast Swing as well as the entire PGA Tour season.

Pebble Beach Golf Links – the namesake of Pebble Beach Resorts –  ranks No. 9 on Golfweek’s Best list of classic courses in the U.S., and it is No. 1 in California on Golfweek’s Best list of public-access layouts in each state. It is also No. 1 on Golfweek’s Best list of all public-access courses in the U.S.

Thanks to yardage books provided by StrackaLine – the maker of detailed yardage books for thousands of courses around the world – we can see exactly the challenges the pros face this week at Pebble Beach Golf Links.

Golfweek’s Best rankings: The top five courses on the PGA Tour’s West Coast Swing

We bet you can guess the No. 1 course on the PGA Tour’s West Coast Swing, as judged by Golfweek’s Best raters. Can you get the next four?

With the PGA Tour having completed its two annual stops in Hawaii, play is shifting to the five-event West Coast Swing in California and Arizona.

Starting this week, players will tee off in The American Express in La Quinta, California, followed by the Farmers Insurance Open on two courses in San Diego; the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am at three courses in Pebble Beach, California; the WM Phoenix Open in Arizona and the Genesis Invitational in Pacific Palisades, California.

That’s 10 courses in all, but which are the best of the West? We can use Golfweek’s Best ratings of thousands of courses in the U.S.  for some insight.

The hundreds of members of our course-ratings panel continually evaluate courses and rate them based on our 10 criteria. They also file a single, overall rating on each course. Those overall ratings on each course are averaged to produce a final, cumulative rating. Then each course is ranked against other courses.

Below are the top five courses on the West Coast Swing with location, year of opening, designer and other information.

Dramatic video shows impact of ‘atmospheric river’ storms on Monterey Peninsula’s golf courses in California

Monterey Peninsula and its famed golf courses are pounded by extreme weather steered by an ‘atmospheric river.’

Northern California has been battered in recent days by strong winds, rain and even snow, and there is more extreme weather on the way, according to Weather.com. Two people have died in the storms so far and more than 176,000 are without power as of Thursday evening, the site reported.

The area’s famed golf courses are not immune to what is called the atmospheric river that’s driving the storms. That’s especially so for the layouts close to the Pacific Ocean coastline as massive waves and flooding threaten golf holes. Even inland, many course operators are dealing with flooding and the effects of winds that reached 80 mph at elevation and 50 mph in San Francisco and Sacramento. It will be days before the full effects of the storm can be tallied.

Sometimes called “rivers in the sky,” atmospheric rivers are a major factor in extreme rain and snowfall in the West.

Long, narrow corridors of air heavy with moisture form when warmer air from the tropics moves toward the poles ahead of powerful storm fronts. They can carry huge amounts of water over thousands of miles.

Atmospheric rivers function much like rivers on the surface but can carry even more water than the Mississippi River.

MORE: USA TODAY explains atmospheric rivers

One coastal golf club that appears to have been hit hard is Monterey Peninsula Country Club, home to two layouts – the Dunes and the Shore – that both are ranked by Golfweek’s Best to be among the top 10 private clubs in California. Several posts to social media and other clips sent to Golfweek have shown apparent damage to the club’s Dunes Course along the water.

It’s worth noting that despite the tweet’s reference of Chernobyl, the full extent of the damage isn’t clear, though it certainly is eye-opening. A call to the operators at Monterey Peninsula Country Club went to voicemail Thursday afternoon.

Alan Shipnuck of Fire Pit Collective reported later in the day that the club anticipates being able to repair the damage to No. 14 on the Dunes Course and that the hole will be closed “for just a little while.”

There are several other famed courses exposed to the weather pounding Monterey Peninsula, including Cypress Point, Pebble Beach Golf Links, Spyglass Hill, the Links at Spanish Bay, even the popular municipal Pacific Grove Golf Links. Golfweek reached out to several course operators without hearing back. California Governor Gavin Newsome has declared a state of emergency, and evacuations have been issued in parts of Monterey County and other areas.

Any damage – with none reported so far – to Pebble Beach Golf Links, Spyglass Hill or Monterey Peninsula Country Club’s Shore Course could prove problematic for the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, the annual PGA Tour event scheduled Feb. 2-5. Pebble Beach also will be host to the U.S. Women’s Open in July.

USA Today’s Janet Loehrke, Ramon Padilla and Dinah Voyles Pulver contributed to this article.
