The Monmouth Hawks and Seton Hall Pirates open their 2022-23 seasons with a non-conference tilt in Newark. Tip-off at the Prudential Center is slated for 8 p.m. ET (FS1). Monmouth got off to a great start a year ago, winning 10 of its first 12 games. The Hawks finished 21-13 overall and 11-9 (4th) in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. Last season was MU’s last in the MAAC and they now compete in the Colonial Athletic Association.
These two programs last met Nov. 12, 2017, when the Pirates won as 16.5-point favorites 75-65.
The Pirates were 21-11 last season. They went 11-8 (5th) in the Big East and earned an NCAA Tournament berth. Seton Hall was solid down the stretch, at point going 9-2 from Feb. 1-March 9. Coach Kevin Willard, who had been at SHU since 2011, was hired by Maryland in the offseason and the Pirates’ new bench boss is Shaheen Holloway, who guided St. Peter’s to an Elite Eight appearance last March.

Figure Seton Hall’s defense being a major problem for a young Monmouth squad that returns no starters from last year.
Holloway’s St. Peter’s squad went 3-0 SU and 3-0 ATS against the Hawks last season. But his new Pirates unit may have a couple injury concerns in the rotation, and this spread is a large 1 for a pair of teams expected to play mostly slow-tempo ball this year.
