Who are 5 of the best players to never grace the cover of MLB: The Show?

Who are some of the best players that have never been on the cover of the best MLB video game franchise?

Recently, San Diego Studios released the new cover athlete for MLB: The Show and that got me thinking, who are some of the best players that have never been on the cover of the best MLB video game franchise?

For reference, here’s the list of all of the cover athletes for MLB: The Show starting back in 1998. I noticed there were a few big names left out to shout out.

Keep in mind, that these are just my opinions! A lot of you may disagree on a few of these. Before we get into it, I’ll tell you the teams these five players played for to see if you can guess them.

No. 5 – St. Louis Cardinals

No. 4 – Arizona Diamondbacks

No. 3 – San Diego Padres

No. 2 – New York Yankees

No. 1 – Los Angeles Angels

Every MLB: The Show cover star since 1997

Let’s look at every MLB: The Show cover athlete from the past two and a half decades.

For more than two decades, MLB The Show has been a strong contender for the “best sports game” crown. No doubt because Sony has heavily invested in its success for all these years.

We’ve decided to look back on the entire series and see which athletes graced the cover. By that, we mean every installment – from the original nine MLB series developed by 989 Sports, to when Sony’s San Diego Studio took over in 2006 with the “The Show” subtitle.

As a heads-up, we’re listing editions released in the United States – so no image variants from other regions. However, we’ll mention those athletes in the notes! There’s a lot of history to cover here, so let’s jump into it!

MLB: The Show footage? No, but MLB drone video from Cardinals – Cubs had fans thinking it was

This really looked like a video game!

Hey, this is pretty neat!

The St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs played in London this past weekend, which led to some fun stuff including British calls of the game as if it was soccer.

But let’s focus on this video. This is a shot of the Cardinals taking the field this weekend, shot by a drone, a lovely view that we don’t usually get to see from a baseball game.

Yet everyone had the same thought: “Is that something from a video game like MLB: The Show? Because, damn, it really looks like it!”

Check out the video and the reaction:

MLB The Show 22 review

Is the tradition of unparalleled quality still going strong today?

Sports games are among the hardest to judge due to the frequency in which they release. Each year we’re treated to new installments in the Madden, NHL, FIFA, and MLB franchises. What often gets lost in translation is the quality of these games due to the perceived minor nature of changes that come with each new iteration. MLB The Show 22 is a fine example of a fantastic game that might not get the rub it deserves because of seemingly incremental improvements.

America’s favorite pastime has always translated well into video game form and Sony San Diego has been at the forefront of this. Others have tried and ultimately faded away while MLB The Show 22 marks the seventeenth annual title the studio has released since it was brought into the Sony family of studios. Is the tradition of unparalleled quality still going strong today?

April 2022 game releases: Upcoming titles being released this month

After a strong start to the year, April 2022 slows down a bit, but we’ll still see some quality new games, including a few sports titles and Lego Star Wars.

After a strong start to 2022 and three months packed with big game releases, April’s lineup might feel like a bit of a slowdown, but there are still quite a few great games to get excited about.

Sports game buffs are in for a treat with three very different titles in the genre releasing this month, while Star Wars fans will have two reasons to grab their controllers (or joy-con) – one brand-new Lego Star Wars game is getting a full release and a remaster of a cult classic is coming to the Switch.

Speaking of Nintendo’s handheld, if you are a Switch owner, this month is all about you, with new games, ports, and series debuts proving that the console stays strong even five years after its launch.

‘MLB: The Show 20’ players are already hitting Astros batters with pitches

Of course.

We won’t have real baseball to watch for, perhaps, a month or longer.

But at least MLB The Show 20 is live. So virtual baseball it is.

Now, I’ve already made the case for having pitchers NOT throw at Houston Astros hitters after the cheating scandal that rocked Major League Baseball was revealed, but we did see some Houston batters get nailed in spring training (some, possibly, not on purpose).

Yet it comes as no surprise to see that players of the game are taking matters into their own hands, using virtual pitchers to throw at or near some Astros:
