AWARD TRACKER: Every Penn State Player on a preseason award watch list

What Penn State players are on college football watch lists in 2022?

Penn State has always been a program with rich history and with plenty of awards in the program’s history. Players like [autotag]Paul Posluszny[/autotag], [autotag]Saquon Barkley[/autotag], and [autotag]Carl Nassib[/autotag] are all recent players with awards given out by different establishments.

This year we are seeing a ton of Penn State players named to preseason watch lists. Both sides of the ball are well represented headlined by players [autotag]Sean Clifford [/autotag]and [autotag]Joey Porter Jr.[/autotag]. Both players are up for offensive and defensive player of the year awards but there is more hardware the Nittany Lions could bring home.

Now, being on award watch lists are a great thing but the season still needs to be played out. For the time being though with fall camps just around the corner, they do give Penn State fans a lot of optimism as they head into a critical year in the program’s history.

Penn State in top 12 for talented four-star receiver from Philly, Tyseer Denmark

Penn State included in top 12 for four-star WR Tyseer Denmark from Philly in Class of 2024

As Penn State begins to put the finishing touches on its Class of 2023, some of the recruiting focus can now begin to shift to the Class of 2024. And keeping one of the state’s top players close to home could be a priority for James Franklin and his staff.

Wide receiver Tyseer Denmark, of Philadelphia, is a four-star recruit according to the 247Sports composite rankings and he is the No. 78 player overall in the nation and the No. 2 player overall in Pennsylvania in the Class of 2024 according to the same ranking system. Naturally, that means Franklin will do whatever he can to keep Denmark from leaving the state, and the competition just went to the next level after Washington revealed his top 12 schools.

Penn State was among the 12 schools included in Denmark’s top schools. The rest of the list is a compilation of some heavy hitters on the recruiting trail with Alabama, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oregon, Rutgers, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Texas A&M, and USC also making the cut.

The 5′-11″ wide receiver from Roman Catholic is clearly a hot recruiting prospect with a ton of tremendous options to weigh as he continues on his recruiting process. He would certainly be a big get for Franklin if he ultimately chooses to go to Penn State, and the Nittany Lions could be in the market for a stud receiver in the Class of 2024. [autotag]Parker Washington[/autotag] and [autotag]Mitchell Tinsley[/autotag] could both be playing in the NFL after the upcoming 2022 season and [autotag]KeAndre Lambert-Smith[/autotag] isn’t far away from moving on either. Penn State has obtained some key receivers through recruiting in the Class of 2022 with a couple of four-star players in [autotag]Kaden Saunders[/autotag] and [autotag]Anthony Ivey[/autotag]. Penn State also has a couple of receivers potentially lined up with commitments from Class of 2023 four-star [autotag]Ejani Shakir[/autotag] from New Jersey and three-star in-state recruit [autotag]Yazeed Haynes[/autotag]. But adding one of the top receivers in the country in the Class of 2024 would be a nice boost for the program.

While no crystal ball predictions have been officially cast on 247Sports, the On3 recruiting prediction machine calculates Penn State as an early favorite for Denmark’s commitment. Penn State is given a 37.0% chance of securing Denmark’s commitment according to its computer model, but it is far too early in the process to know how much weight Penn State is carrying in the recruiting process for sure.

What we do know is Denmark has long been Penn State’s radar, as you might expect for a talented wide receiver from Philadelphia. Denver visited Penn State’s campus early in his recruiting process in April 2021, just two months after Penn State was one of the first schools to extend an offer (Pitt was the first, with Penn State the second a couple of weeks later). He also attended Penn State’s football camp in June 2021 and returned for an unofficial visit on campus last September for Penn State’s spotlighted primetime game against Auburn. At this time, the only other visit Denmark has made is an unofficial visit to Texas A&M back in March of this year.

Penn State’s tight end duo named on Mackey Award watch list

Penn State tight end duo named on watch list for John Mackey Award.

The idea that Penn State has a strong tight end combination was supported by the release of the watch list for the Mackey Award on Friday. [autotag]Theo Johnson[/autotag] and [autotag]Brenton Strange[/autotag] were each included on the watch list for the award for the nation’s top tight end.

Johnson had 19 catches for 213 yards and a touchdown last season, while Strange hauled in 20 catches for 225 yards and three touchdowns. Penn State hopes to get more production out of the position with these two leading the way as offensive coordinator [autotag]Mike Yurcich[/autotag] goes into his second season on the staff.

Penn State also had a couple of receivers named to the watch list for the Biletnikoff Award earlier in the week. [autotag]Parker Washington[/autotag] and [autotag]Mitchell Tinsley[/autotag] were included on the watch list for the nation’s top receiver.

Some notable former winners of the Mackey Award, which was first awarded in 2000, include Dallas Clark (Iowa, 2002), Aaron Hernandez (Florida, 2009), Jake Butt (Michigan, 2016), and Kyle Pitts (Florida, 2020). T.J. Hockenson of Iowa is the most recent player from the Big Ten to take home the award.

Penn State has never had a Mackey Award winner. Last year’s winner of the award was Trey McBride of Colorado State.

Penn State receiving duo named to Biletnikoff Award watch list

Penn State lands two receivers on Biletnikoff Award watch list.

Two of Penn State’s top offensive weapons made an appearance on another college football award watch list on Thursday. After the release of the Davey O’Brien Award watch list and the Doak Walker Award watch list earlier this week, each including a Penn State player, Thursday’s attention shifted to receivers with the release of the Biletnikoff Award watch list for the upcoming 2022 season.

[autotag]Parker Washington[/autotag] and [autotag]Mitchell Tinsley[/autotag] each made an appearance on the watch list for the nation’s top receiver. The Biletnikoff Award is presented annually to the nation’s top receiver by the Tallahassee Quarterback Club Foundation, with anyone who catches a pass eligible for the award regardless of position. To date, every winner of the award has been a wide receiver, as the award had historically been just for wide receivers until more recent years.

Washington is Penn State’s leading receiver returning from 2021 after hauling in 64 catches for 820 yards and four touchdowns. Washington was a secondary receiver behind Dotson, who was a first-round draft pick of the Washington Commanders, but Washington offered plenty of highlights to stand on his own as a big-play receiver for the Penn State offense.

Tinsley comes to Penn State from Western Kentucky. Like Washington, Tinsley was the team’s second-leading receiver for the Hilltoppers in a pass-heavy attack led by quarterback Bailey Zappe. Tinsley had 87 catches for 1,402 yards and 14 touchdowns and was still the team’s second-leading receiver! Jerreth Sterns was Western Kentucky’s leading receiver but Tinsley’s move to Penn State figures to work out quite well for the Nittany Lions.

The duo of Washington and Tinsley alone makes for a solid receiving combination for quarterback Sean Clifford and offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich to rely on. Adding KeAndre Lambert-Smith as another option makes for a potentially dangerous passing game if the offensive line gives Clifford time to work.

Former Penn State wide receiver [autotag]Bobby Engram[/autotag] was the first player to ever win the Biletnikoff Award, taking home the new award in 1994 following Penn State’s undefeated season. But Engram is the only Biletnikoff Award winner in school history.

[lawrence-related id=21375,21369,21364,21362]

The last Big Ten player to win the Biletnikoff Award was Braylon Edwards of Michigan in 2004.

Last year’s winner of the BiletnikoffAward was Jordan Addison of Pittsburgh. Addison transferred to USC during the offseason.

Other notable Biletnikoff Award winners include Randy Moss of Marshall, Larry Fitzgerald of Pittsburgh, Calvin Johnson of Georgia Tech, two-time winners Michael Crabtree of Texas Tech and Justin Blackmon of Oklahoma State, Ja’Marr Chase of LSU, and 2020 Heisman Trophy winner DeVonta Smith of Alabama.

Penn State with a top-3 receiving duo in 2022? One analyst thinks so

Penn State has a top-3 receiving duo in the nation according to one recruiting analyst

Replacing Jahan Dotson is no easy feat for Penn State going into the 2022 season, but the expectations should remain fairly high for Penn State’s top receivers according to one recruiting analyst. Mike Farrell recently shared his personal ranking of the top receiving duos in the nation among his various rankings going into the new season, and the combination of [autotag]Parker Washington[/autotag] and [autotag]Mitchell Tinsley[/autotag] appears to be set in a fairly good spot.

Farrell ranked the Penn State duo as his No. 3 overall receiving duo in college football for the 2022 season, with only Ohio State and Texas coming in front of the Nittany Lions. Farrell shared his top 12 ranking on Twitter.

That is clearly some high praise for Penn State’s top two receivers considering the expectations and standard for Ohio State receivers and the fact that USC, at No. 4, just added the 2021 Biletnikoff Award winner Jordan Addison via the transfer portal from Pitt.

Penn State Top 25 players for 2022: Mitchell Tinsley

Penn State Top 25 Players in 2022: Mitchell Tinsley, wide receiver

Head coach [autotag]James Franklin[/autotag] has just started to learn the ways of the transfer portal, and to kick off things in 2022 he has found a playmaker. Former Western Kentucky Hilltopper [autotag]Mitchell Tinsley[/autotag] decided to leave the pass happy offense for a chance at something special in State College.

Quarterbacks Sean Clifford and Drew Allar should be very happy that Franklin found Tinsley in the portal. When you watch him you see a receiver with a similar skillset to what they had in [autotag]Jahan Dotson[/autotag], same role too.

Whether or not he can play the same and do as well for the Nittany Lions is to be determined. For now, enjoy Mitchell Tinsley in this offense because from day one he will make it better.

Penn State football’s top 10 NIL player values in 2022

How Penn State football players stack up in NIL value according to On3

The entire college football landscape has been changed by name, image, and likeness opportunities finally being granted to all student-athletes. While some of the NIL stories surfacing around the country have certainly raised some valid questions about the future of the sport and how the NCAA handled, or mishandled, the entire situation, the bridge to this new era of college sports has officially been crossed and there may be no turning back.

A number of Penn State student-athletes have already taken advantage of the NIL possibilities they have had presented to them, including national champion wrestler Roman Bravo-Young. But how much is each football player’s NIL value entering the 2022 season?

That is where On3 comes in handy. In addition to covering recruiting in the traditional sense, On3 specializes in monitoring NIL values for players around the country. These values can change at any point in time, but here are the top 10 NIL values for Penn State players currently on the roster or committed in the Class of 2023 heading into the 2022 season.

Noticeably absent from this current snapshot of NIL values is freshman running back [autotag]Nick Singleton[/autotag], who already has his first NIL deal in place. But it may be safe to imagine Singleton will pop up on this list once he gets rolling.

Parker Washington gets some NFL draft love from On3

On3 says this Penn State player is not receiving enough NFL draft hype for 2023

It is never too late to get started looking forward to the 2023 NFL draft. As the mock drafts have already started to make the rounds for the way-too-early draft projections, Penn State cornerback [autotag]Joey Porter Jr.[/autotag] is easily the Penn State player with the most draft hype in the next draft cycle. But wide receiver [autotag]Parker Washington[/autotag] is certainly on the radar as a potential early-round draft selection for some.

On3 recently profiled six players from around the Big Ten that are “lesser-hyped,” as they termed it. Washington is in a good position to make a name for himself as the Nittany Lions offense attempts to replace a first-round talent in Jahan Dotson. Dotson was selected by the Washington Commanders in the first round of the 2022 NFL draft, and Washington has already embraced the challenge he faces this upcoming season of stepping his game up.

Truth is, Washington may not have a whole lot he needs to improve. Washington, at times, had arguably better performances than Dotson last season and he compiled a highlight reel that is worthy of being respected among some of the best receivers in the nation. Penn State has also developed a positive track record for wide receivers at the next level with Allen Robinson, Chris Godwin, and now Dotson. Still, Washington may be flying slightly under the radar for many going into this next draft cycle.

Here is what On3 had to say about Washington’s draft grade;

Parker Washington is set to replace Washington Commanders first-round pick Jahan Dotson as Penn State’s No. 1 receiver. Washington (5-10, 212), was second on the team last season with 64 catches, 820 yards and four touchdowns.

Washington is expected to be the top wide receiver for Penn State and quarterback Sean Clifford in 2022. The addition of [autotag]Mitchell Tinsley[/autotag] and the continued development of [autotag]Keandre Lambert-Smith[/autotag] makes for a solid receiver trio for offensive coordinator [autotag]Mike Yurcich[/autotag] to experiment with.

PFF ranks Parker Washington among top receivers in 2023 NFL draft

PFF mentions Penn State WR Parker Washington as one of the top slot receivers in the 2023 NFL draft pool

Penn State cornerback [autotag]Joey Porter Jr.[/autotag] has been receiveing plenty of draft hype for the 2023 NFL draft class as the 2022 college football season approaches. Porter is viewed by some as a potential first-round draft pick in next year’s NFL draft, which would certainly raise the bar for Penn State’s program when it comes to cornerbacks. But now a wide receiver is receiving some pretty positive draft hype entering the upcoming college football season.

[autotag]Parker Washington[/autotag] was ranked as one of the top 10 wide receiver draft prospects for the 2023 NFL draft recently by Pro Football Focus. PFF noted that the departure of [autotag]Jahan Dotson[/autotag], a first-round pick of the Washington Commanders in the 2022 NFL draft, should lead to a more productive season from Washington, and that should only continue to boost his draft stock going into the 2023 draft season.

Washington has already challenged himself to take the next steps forward as he becomes the likely top target for quarterback [autotag]Sean Clifford[/autotag] in the Penn State offense in 2022. It is not as though Washington has much to prove though. The junior wide receiver has already assembled quite the highlight reel of incredible catches and there were even some games where Washington had more of an impact on the game than Dotson.

From PFF;

He’s only been a slot receiver, and that’s where he profiles in the NFL. At 5-foot-10, 207 pounds, he’s got an Amari Rodgers-esque body type that’s more akin to a running back. That serves him well after the catch, where he broke 16 tackles last season.

Much like Dotson, Washington also possesses Venus flytrap hands. He’s dropped only five passes on 105 catchable targets in his collegiate career, with numerous highlight-reel snags mixed in.

With his physical playstyle, reliable hands and yards-after-catch ability, Washington is the early favorite for the best pure slot in the draft class.

It will be fun watching Washington play another season with the Nittany Lions in the meantime. With Dotson gone, Washignton figures to be the team’s leading receiver but the addition of [autotag]Mitchell Tinsley[/autotag] from Western Kentucky and the continued development of [autotag]KeAndre Lambert-Smith[/autotag] does give Penn State three receivers it can do some damage with this fall.

Penn State football snapshot profile: No. 12 Anthony Ivey

Penn State will have a plethora of receivers going into next season, including Anthony Ivey.

Going into the 2022 football season, Nittany Lions Wire will be looking at each scholarship player listed on the Penn State roster.

Over the preseason, each profile will cover where the player is from, how recruiting websites rated them coming out of high school, and what role they will play for [autotag]James Franklin[/autotag] this season.

Penn State will have a plethora of receivers going into next season, including [autotag]Anthony Ivey[/autotag], who comes in along with a handful of new and fresh pass-catchers to State College.

Ivey will likely use at least the first year as a reserve player to learn from [autotag]Mitchell Tinsley[/autotag] and [autotag]Parker Washington[/autotag], but the Nittany Lions will have plenty of talent in their wide receiver room.
