Rutgers Wrestling adds home dual match with Virginia Tech to 2023-2024 schedule

Rutgers wrestling will battle Virginia Tech this season.

With the start of the wrestling season only months away, Rutgers is adding to their home schedule. On Friday, the Scarlet Knights announced they will welcome Virginia Tech to Jersey Mike’s Arena. The date and time of the dual match will be released at a later date.

Although the full schedule has yet to be released, Virginia Tech marks the fifth home match on the books. Rutgers is also set to face Ohio State, Minnesota, Maryland, and Minnesota. They will face Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State, and Purdue on the road.

Once the date is announced, the matchup with Virginia Tech will not be one that Rutgers fans want to miss. The Hokies ranked No. 10 in the final NWCA Coaches Poll and produced five All-Americans at the 2023 NCAA Wrestling Championships last March in Tulsa, Oklahoma. However, it is a match the Scarlet Knights are ready for.

Over the last few months, Rutgers has been busy adding to their roster. The new additions include Jacob Walter, Mitch Moore, and Yaraslau Slavikouski. The talented trio brings plenty of experience and accolades to Piscataway. They will be relied on heavily against a top-ten team like the Hookies.

They are joining a Scarlet Knights team that finished No. 22 in the final 2022-23 NWCA Coaches Poll. It was the 10th final top-25 finish for the Scarlet Knights under head coach Scott Goodale. With a roster full of talent, the 2023-2024 season should be no different.

Rutgers wrestling reveals Big Ten opponents for 2023-2024 campaign

The Rutgers wrestling schedule has been announced.

With fall approaching, the start of the wrestling season is getting closer by the day. For Rutgers, the expectations are high, and fans can finally start marking their calendars after the Big Ten released announced its opponent rotation for the 2023-24 season.

After finishing No. 22 in the country last season, Rutgers is set to face eight conference opponents, including home matchups against Indiana, Maryland, Minnesota, and Ohio State. The Scarlet Knights will go on the road to face Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State, and Purdue. Their focus will be on repeating their recent success.

Last year Rutgers recorded their tenth top-25 finish under head coach Scott Goodale. For the second straight season, the Scarlet Knights produced seven NCAA qualifiers. On a weekly basis, Jersey Mike’s Arena was the place to be as Rutgers finished fifth in attendance.

Over the offseason, Rutgers has continued adding talent as they look to rise to the top of the wrestling world. The new faces include Jacob Butler, Mitch Moore, and Yaraslau Slavikouski. Moore and Slavikouski bring valuable experience after competing at last year’s championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Slavikouski advanced to the Round of 12 at heavyweight for Harvard.

During the 2022-2023 campaign, Rutgers wrestling should provide plenty of unforgettable moments once the first whistle blows. They have become one of the best programs in the country, and that should only continue.

Rutgers wrestling adds Four-Time NCAA qualifier Mitch Moore

Mitch Moore lands with Rutgers wrestling.

Rutgers wrestling has added more experience to its roster this week in the form of four-time NCAA qualifier Mitch Moore. The Ohio native is a transfer from Oklahoma and will be immediately eligible for the Scarlet Knights beginning next season.

Moore is the third player to transfer to Rutgers this offseason, joining Jacob Butler and Harvard graduate transfer Yaraslau Slavikouski (HWT). Butler and Moore were teammates at Oklahoma.

During his college career, Moore has competed at 141 and 149 pounds. His career includes a two-year stint with Virginia Tech and a three-year stint with Oklahoma. During his time with the Sooners, Moore added 80 wins to resume, including 19 last year.

His tenure at Virginia Tech began with back-to-back NCAA qualifying seasons. Moore advanced to the ‘Blood Round’ at the 2021 NCAA Championships for Oklahoma, competing at 149 pounds.

While Moore has moved around quite a bit, he has made an impact at every school he has wrestled for. The St. Paris native was named the 2019 ACC Freshman of the Year. In his sophomore season, he outscored his opponents 48-7.

After finishing No.22 in the final 2022-23 NWCA Coaches Poll, Rutgers has high expectations for the 2023-2024 campaign. They finished fourth in home attendance last year and produced seven NCAA qualifiers for the second consecutive season. With Moore now in the mix, those numbers should increase.

Rutgers wrestling adds Mitch Moore, a transfer from Oklahoma.

The offseason re-tooling of Rutgers wrestling continued on Thursday with the addition of Mitch Moore from the transfer portal.

Moore comes to the program in the 141-pound weight class according to Wrestle Stat. He has qualified multiple times for the NCAA Tournament.

He has ties to the Big Ten region, having grown up in Ohio. Last season at 149 pounds, he went 19-9 for Oklahoma.

In 2021, Moore transferred from Virginia Tech to Oklahoma..

It has been a busy offseason for Rutgers wrestling, with Moore representing a third significant addition to the program via the transfer portal. It was needed as Rutgers finished this past season at No. 22 in the final NWCA Coaches Poll.

Jacob Butler, who also wrestled for Oklahoma last year and posted a 14-8 record, transferred in April to Rutgers. Also in April, Rutgers added two-time NCAA qualifier Yaraslau Slavikouski via the portal. Last season at Harvard, Slavikouski went 30-6 last season and won three matches in the NCAA Tournament.
