The UFC is back in Houston this week with a pair of title fights featuring dominant champions atop the card.

UFC 247 takes place Saturday at Toyota Center in Houston. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on ESPN and early prelims on UFC Fight Pass/ESPN+.

(Click here to open a PDF of the staff picks grid in a separate window.)

In the main event, light heavyweight champion [autotag]Jon Jones[/autotag] (25-1 MMA, 19-1 UFC) puts his title on the line against unbeaten challenger [autotag]Dominick Reyes[/autotag] (12-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC). Jones is a fairly heavy favorite from the oddsmakers in the fight at as much as 5-1. Not surprisingly, he has a big 11-3 lead in the picks from our 14 MMA Junkie editors, writers, radio hosts and videographers.

In the co-main event, women’s flyweight champ [autotag]Valentina Shevchenko[/autotag] (18-3 MMA, 7-2 UFC) is a massive favorite of as much as 16-1 against [autotag]Katlyn Chookagian[/autotag] (13-2 MMA, 6-2 UFC), so it should come as little surprise that she is one of our two unanimous picks on the main card at 14-0.

The other unanimous pick is Houston resident [autotag]Derrick Lewis[/autotag] (22-7 MMA, 13-5 UFC) in a heavyweight home fight against [autotag]Ilir Latifi[/autotag] (14-7 MMA, 7-5 UFC). Lewis is more than a 2-1 favorite, has never lost in Texas in his career, and is a 14-0 pick.

[lawrence-related id=486119,486117]

Also on the main card, [autotag]Juan Adams[/autotag] (5-2 MMA, 1-2 UFC) is more than a 2-1 favorite in his heavyweight fight against [autotag]Justin Tafa[/autotag] (3-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC), and he’s got a big 11-3 advantage in the picks.

And even though [autotag]Mirsad Bektic[/autotag] (13-2 MMA, 6-2 UFC) is a small favorite in his featherweight fight against [autotag]Dan Ige[/autotag] (12-2 MMA, 4-1 UFC), it’s Ige who has a big 11-3 lead in the picks with most of our staff members thinking mild upset – even though our readers give Bektic the slight advantage.

In the MMA Junkie reader consensus picks, Jones (71 percent), Shevchenko (90 percent), Adams (63 percent), Bektic (53 percent) and Lewis (86 percent) are the choices.

Ahead of UFC 247, Mirsad Bektic thinks he’s made proper adjustments for health, consistency

UFC 247’s Mirsad Bektic plans to live up to his potential 2020.

HOUSTON – [autotag]Mirsad Bektic[/autotag] is gunning for consistency in 2020.

A UFC featherweight contender, Bektic (13-2 MMA, 6-2 UFC) has long been perceived by the public as a fighter with a lot of potential. That said, he’s struggled to follow up, due to injuries and inconsistency.

In the lead-up to UFC 247 however, Bektic thinks he’s found a solution which solves both issues.

“Fans and promotions haven’t seen me in action quite as much because of injuries and my own ego getting the better of me and overworking,” Bektic told MMA Junkie on Wednesday. “I worked a lot smarter. In some people’s eyes, (I worked) a lot less. It was pretty cool.”

The thought of his post-career health really hit home for the American Top Team product. While the temptation to train 24/7 has long been present in his mind, Bektic indicated he’s kept his impulses in check by remembering to do what’s best for his body longterm.

“You want to think about longevity,” Bektic said. “You want to think about sustainability. How will I be as a man at 60 years old outside of this sport? That really hit home. It’s tough, right? As a competitor, a top competitor, I’m competitive in everything I do. I’ve got to put my ego down and I feel great to do two more rounds. My partner got the best of me last round, I should do another one. It’s like, I’m going to take a step back and try to get it next time.

“We don’t get second chances in fights. That’s how I approach training. I was very effective in my training. I have an hour. I’ll be most effective in the hour – not 30 minutes before, not thirty minutes after. I’m not making it a three-hour practice.”

[lawrence-related id=486119,486117]

Saturday night, Bektic takes on surging Hawaiian Dan Ige on the UFC 247 main card. Bektic grinned when talking about the upcoming fight. He likes the matchup Ige (12-2 MMA, 4-1 UFC) presents.

“As soon as I found out about him, I checked out his style. I love it,” Bektic said. “I love his style and this stylistic matchup. I’m very excited to go out there and showcase the Mirsad everybody knows.”

UFC 247 takes place Saturday at Toyota Center in Houston. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on ESPN and early prelims on UFC Fight Pass/ESPN+.

Off Guard: Dan Ige says UFC 247 fight with Mirsad Bektic will bring out best of him

Dan Ige looks forward to UFC 247 being the first step toward a big 2020 for him.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Dan Ige[/autotag] got the big fight he was looking for when he drew ranked featherweight [autotag]Mirsad Bektic[/autotag].

Ige will fight Bektic in February at UFC 247 in Houston, looking to make it five wins in a row in a matchup that he’s confident will bring the best out of him.

“From what I saw, he was a super high-rated prospect at the time, and he’s a guy people saw like, ‘Oh, this guy could probably be a champion,'” Ige told MMA Junkie. “Like his demeanor and the way he fought, and he just brings it, and he’s fought some big names, high-level competition. He’s been in there with the best, but I need these kind of fights to bring out the best in me, so you will see a really good Dan Ige (on) Feb. 8.”

Ige (12-2 MMA, 4-1 UFC), who’s coming off a unanimous decision win over Kevin Aguilar in June, was hoping to compete one more time in 2019 on the UFC 244 card in Madison Square Garden, but ultimately didn’t get the chance.

But on Feb. 8 he draws his toughest test to date on paper, when he takes on a seasoned featherweight in Bektic (13-2 MMA, 6-2 UFC), and Ige is ready to show the world that he can compete at the highest level.

“This is going to be a huge year for me,” Ige said. “It’s fighting No. 13 right now, hoping to get a good win off that, and just keep building, keep building, and fighting the best in the world. And I’m ready to fight the best in the world, because I know I’m the best in the world, and I will be the best in the world, especially on that night on Feb. 8, because that’s all that matters.”
