Why Maryland Will Win

It might seem basic, but don’t foul Minnesota.

The Gophers have a tough enough presence on the inside and physical enough to get hacked a whole lot. More than that, they’re amazing once they get to the line – they lead the nation in free-throws made.

Maryland, though, doesn’t commit a whole lot of fouls. They’re among the best in the country in fewest fouls per game – getting whistled almost three fewer times per game than the Gophers.

The Terps can shoot well enough from the field to get back in the game if needed, and Minnesota isn’t built like that – it’s last in the Big Ten in 3-point percentage, but …

Why Minnesota Will Win

Minnesota is outstanding on the inside at coming up with blocks and they should be able to clean up the rebounds a whole lot better than Maryland is.

It should be a strange game on the glass. The Terps are awful at hitting the offensive boards and they’re last in the Big Ten in total rebounds. Minnesota misses enough to matter, but it should be able to come up with a whole slew of second chance points.

No, really. Maryland is awful at coming up with offensive rebounds. Minnesota has come up with ten or more five times in the last nine games. Maryland has come up with a total of 11 offensive rebounds combined in the last three games and hasn’t come ups with double-digit rebounds on the O side in the last eight games.

What’s Going To Happen

Maryland hasn’t been bad on the road with stunning wins over Illinois and Wisconsin over the last month, but Minnesota has yet to lose at home. The Gophers will have their cold streaks, but they’ll be good enough on the boards to make up for it – they’ll outbound the Terps by at least five.

The Minnesota Golden Gophers is on the road to face the Maryland Terrapins in Big 10 action from Capital One Field on Friday night.

Minnesota will look to bounce back after a 49-24 loss to Michigan in their first game of the season last week. Many thought they would have given the Wolverines a little more trouble than they did. Maryland is also looking to rebound after a blowout loss to Northwestern by a score of 43-3. Tua’s brother Taulia Tagovailoa will need to put up another game to be considered in the same conversation as his brother.

This should be a great Big 10 matchup, tune in, here is everything you need to know to stream the game tonight.

Prediction: Neither team looked great last week but I don’t think that warrants a 20 point spread for either team here.  Maryland had an awful game against a possible CFB team in Northwestern while Minnesota got crushed by Michigan. Take the points with Maryland in this one.

Why Minnesota Will Win

The Maryland offense still doesn’t work.

Northwestern might have a solid defense, but to start out the season with a 43-3 loss – only generating an early field goal, and that’s it – with just 207 yards showed just how far the program still has to go.

Minnesota night have struggled in the opener against Michigan, but the D should catch a break this week, and the offense should be able to open it up a bit after the rough start.

Tanner Morgan and the passing game shouldn’t have a problem, but the Mohamed Ibrahim and the rushing attack should go wild against a defensive front that allowed 325 yards of Northwestern rushing offense.

Why Maryland Will Win

Eventually this offense is going to work.

QB Taulia Tagovailoa is a good enough talent to be far better than he showed against Northwestern, and Lance LeGendre hit all four of his passes. There’s talent in the receiving corps, there’s speed, and there’s enough in place to be far more explosive once it clicks.

Michigan came up with a great offensive balance against the Gophers and always had an answer against a Gopher defense that couldn’t do enough to get into the backfield. On the other side, the offensive line couldn’t stop the Wolverine pass rush. Maryland has to sell out on one side of the line, and it has to give the quarterbacks time to work.

What’s Going To Happen

Maryland did next to nothing right against Northwestern, but now it’s getting a shot at home to turn this around in a hurry. It won’t happen.

Minnesota is far better than it looked against a strong Michigan team that owned the lines. This week, this will be the Gopher team many thought would show up last Saturday night. The running game and the offense will control the clock for close to 40 minutes.
