Steelers vs Ravens: Minkah Fitzpatrick and Elandon Roberts return to practice

Good news out of Steelers practice on the injury front on Wednesday.

The Pittsburgh Steelers got a double dose of good news on Wednesday when linebacker Elandon Roberts and safety Minkah Fitzpatrick returned to practice.

Pittsburgh has seriously missed these two defenders in the middle of the defense. Roberts has been out with a pectoral injury while Fitzpatrick has been dealing with a knee.

This week the Steelers face off against the Baltimore Ravens with a chance to secure a playoff spot with a win. So getting all hands on deck on defense, regardless of who is playing quarterback for the Ravens.

In Fitzpatrick’s absence, practice squad safety Eric Rowe has been in the starting lineup and played pretty well. The Steelers also moved cornerback Patrick Peterson to the other safety spot with Keanu Neal on IR.

Roberts was just the last of multiple injuries to starting inside linebackers. The Steelers brought back Myles Jack after he unretired and he’s been the team’s primary inside linebacker for the past two weeks.

Here are seven things to know about these two teams heading into a critical Week 17 matchup.

Steelers final injury report: 3 players ruled out vs. Bengals

The Steelers will be without two starters in the critical Week 16 showdown with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Safety Trenton Thompson has been added to previously ruled out Kenny Pickett and Minkah Fitzpatrick for Saturday’s do-or-die brawl with the Cincinnati Bengals. Another safety, Elijah Riley, remains on injured reserve but has a questionable designation with an ankle injury.

Here’s the rundown from Thursday’s final injury report:

Bengals won’t face Steelers star Minkah Fitzpatrick, yet will see QB Mason Rudolph

The Bengals won’t have to play against Minkah Fitzpatrick. The Steelers also made a change at QB.

The Cincinnati Bengals won’t see star safety Minkah Fitzpatrick when they line up against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 16.

Those Steelers ruled Fitzpatrick out of next Saturday’s game early this week due to a knee injury suffered during a loss last week.

At the other safety spot, Damontae Kazee has been suspended by the NFL for repeated violations of safety policies regarding illegal hits.

As if that weren’t enough, the Steelers have revealed that they will bench Mitch Trubisky in favor of Mason Rudolph, starting next weekend against the Bengals.

That’s the second third-stringer in a row the Bengals will play. Rudolph actually won his first career victory against the Bengals a handful of years ago, but he’s attempted just three passes this season after zero last year.

The Bengals haven’t been without losses either — highlighted by star defensive lineman DJ Reader being lost for the year and Ja’Marr Chase battling a new shoulder injury.

But with the Steelers losers of three in a row and in disarray, this sets the Bengals up nicely to have a good chance at a fourth straight win while remaining in the playoff hunt.

Steelers vs. Bengals: Minkah Fitzpatrick ruled out for Week 16

Minkah Fitzpatrick was ruled out for Pittsburgh’s Week 16 matchup with the Bengals.

Minkah Fitzpatrick, who went down with a knee injury in the Pittsburgh Steelers’ loss to the Indianapolis Colts, has been ruled out for Saturday’s game.

Tomlin said, via today’s press conference, that he doesn’t know how long Fitzpatrick’s current injury will keep him out.

Fitzpatrick was already dealing with a broken hand and has played just 147 defensive snaps since he returned in Week 12 from four weeks sidelined with a hamstring injury.

The seven-year veteran has had an unusally quiet season with three defended passes and 64 tackles in 10 games.

Steelers S Minkah Fitzpatrick downgrade to OUT vs Colts

Steelers S Minkah Fitzpatrick downgrade to OUT vs Colts

The knee injury suffered by Pittsburgh Steelers safety Minkah Fitzpatrick will keep him from returning against the Indianapolis Colts. Fitzpatrick was originally listed as questionable to return but after going into the locker room at halftime, his status was downgraded to OUT.

Fitzpatrick joins fellow starting safety Damontae Kazee as being out for the rest of the game. Kazee was ejected late in the first half for an illegal hit on Colts wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr.

Steelers S Minkah Fitzpatrick questionable to return with knee injury

The Steelers are missing both of their starting safeties against the Colts.

The Pittsburgh Steelers announced that star safety Minkah Fitzpatrick is questionable to return after suffering a knee injury in the second quarter against the Indianapolis Colts.

It wasn’t clear just how Fitzpatrick hurt his knee as he and another Steelers attempted to make a tackle. With Fitzpatrick out, the Steelers are missing both of their starting safeties. Just a few plays before the injury, Damontae Kazee was ejected after a brutal hit on Colts wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr.

The Steelers lead the Colts 13-7 in the final seconds of the first half. No word yet if Fitzpatrick will return in the second half.

Steelers S Minkah Fitzpatrick calls this week’s game a playoff game

The Steelers play a must-win game this Saturday.

When you are in the position the Pittsburgh Steelers are in, your train is pulling up squarely into desperation station. As one of six teams sitting at 7-6 and two of them in the playoffs as of now, the magnitude of every game is magnified.

This week the Steelers take on one of the 7-6 teams not in the playoffs as of now in the Indianapolis Colts. The winner improves to 8-6 and has a serious leg up for the final three games. A fact not lost on Steelers safety Minkah Fitzpatrick.

“Yeah, it’s a playoff game in my eyes,” Fitzpatrick said. Pittsburgh put themselves in this high-pressure situation thanks to two brutal losses in the last two weeks against two of the worst teams in the NFL.   Now there is no margin for error if the Steelers have any hopes of getting into the playoffs at all.

Minkah Fitzpatrick waxes poetic after Steelers embarrassing loss to Patriots

Minkah Fitzpatrick didn’t hold back in his frustration over how his team played.

For a second straight week, the Pittsburgh Steelers fell flat against a team they should have beaten and some of the players didn’t have their hearts in it. The usually subdued Minkah Fitzpatrick had a lot to say after his team’s loss to the New England Patriots Thursday night and he wasn’t shy about taking shots at him own teammates.

“In order to see the fruit, you’ve gotta toil for it,” he said, via Brooke Pryor of ESPN. “I think too many people don’t want to toil for it. They just want to walk out here and think that they’re going to make plays and think that they’re going to perform at a high level. I think we need to have more people who want to work for it, not expect it to be handed to them.

“This is the NFL. Nothing’s handed to you. You got to earn everything. I think that dudes just think that because they’re wearing the black and gold, that they’re going to win games, and I think we need to check that mentality and make people realize that they got to earn that mentality, and they got to earn every single blade of grass, every single splash play and every single rep that they get out there. They got to earn it.”

Fitzpatrick was one of the only guys on the field Thursday playing hard for the Steelers. It might be too little too late but this was something I hope his teammates heard and take to heart.
