Examining Mark Feinsand’s fits for Trey Mancini before trade deadline

Where could the Notre Dame product be headed at or before the trade deadline?

Mark Feinsand of MLB.com has Notre Dame product Trey Mancini as a trade deadline candidate with rising stock. The Baltimore Orioles are in the cellar of the American League, and with Mancini arbitration-eligible for one more season, it makes little sense for one of baseball’s best run producers in 2021 to stay where he is. Feinsand offers three teams that might benefit more from Mancini’s talents. With 47 RBIs this season and a .979 OPS over the past month, Mancini could contribute to one of these suitors:

Milwaukee Brewers at Cincinnati Reds odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Thursday’s Milwaukee Brewers at Cincinnati Reds odds and lines, with MLB picks and predictions.

The Milwaukee Brewers (34-27) and the Cincinnati Reds (29-30) match up Thursday to end their three-game series. First pitch is slated for 12:35 p.m ET at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati, Ohio. Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook‘s lines around the Brewers vs. Reds odds with MLB picks and predictions.

RHP Freddy Peralta is the projected starting pitcher for the Brewers. He is 6-1 with a 2.25 ERA, 0.88 WHIP, and 12.9 K/9 in 64 IP over 11 starts and one bullpen appearance.

Peralta has been on fire lately, giving up just two earned runs in his last two performances, both of which he threw for at least seven innings. However, he did give up two earned runs in 4 2/3 IP in his last outing against the Reds.

RHP Luis Castillo is the projected starting pitcher for the Reds. He is 2-8 with a 6.63 ERA, 1.66 WHIP, and 8.2 K/9 in 58 1/3 IP over 12 starts.

One good thing to note about Castillo is that he could be gaining confidence, pitching six innings against the Cardinals and giving up just one earned run. However, he’s given up at least three earned runs in three of his last five starts.

Brewers at Reds odds, lines, picks and prediction

MLB odds courtesy of BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports for a full list. Odds last updated at 2:35 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Brewers -125 (bet $125 to win $100) | Reds +105 (bet $100 to win $105)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Brewers -1.5 (+125) | Reds +1.5 (-155)
  • Over/Under: 8.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Prediction

Brewers 6, Reds 4

Money line (ML)

“LEAN” Brewers (-125) because the difference in starting pitching could be a game-changer. It’s not the best value, but it’s the better play.

Take it with a grain of salt, but the Reds are by far the worst team on Thursdays. They’re 2-4 with over a 9.00 ERA. Their pitchers are already looking forward to the weekend.

Now, let’s dive into a few real numbers. Coming off a win, the Reds are tossing a pitcher with over a 6.00 ERA through 12 starts to the mound. That’s never good news for the home side.

The Reds ate up LHP Brett Anderson, forcing him to exit with four earned runs. I wouldn’t expect the same success against Peralta who has given up four earned runs in just one start this season.

The Brewers relievers gave up two earned runs in five innings yesterday and were perfect in the first game of the series.

For that reason, I’m leaning towards the Brewers.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

“BET” Brewers -1.5 (+125) because both games have been heavily dictated by the winning team, and the betting value is there. The pitching difference is what really makes the difference.

I’m expecting C Tyler Stephenson not to have his best game of the season as he did against the Brewers in the second game, the Brewers behind Peralta should be able to take care of business.

At this price, taking the NL Central’s leader that’s above .500 on the road at this value is an easy one.

Over/Under (O/U)

“PASS” on the Over/Under at 8.5 because both teams have been too streaky in the series.

The Over missed in the first game and nulled in the second game. It’s slated at eight, and I wouldn’t bet either way on this one.

The Reds do give up more than five earned runs in day games while the Brewers also aren’t great during the daytime either.

Not to harp on it again, but Peralta has been solid all season long while Castillo hasn’t been. With the over having yet to hit and the under not looking great either given the pitchers taking the mound, this is a pass.

The Dodgers astonishingly hit 2 grand slams through the second inning

That’s a lot of grand slams.

The Los Angeles Dodgers struggled to score runs in their first three games against the Milwaukee Brewers this series, where they’ve managed just seven runs in 29 innings during that span.

But in Sunday’s finale, the Dodgers have already surpassed that run total thanks to not one, but two grand slams, where they jumped out to a 9-0 lead over the Brewers.

Oh, and did I mention that it all happened within the first two innings?

With the Dodgers nursing a one-run lead in the first inning, AJ Pollock connected on a grand slam to give them a five-run cushion. Then Matt Beaty, who had an RBI single earlier in the first inning, hit another grand slam to give Los Angeles a 9-0 lead in the second inning.

And, as you can imagine, the Internet was having its fun with the Dodgers’ offensive resurgence.

Video comprehensively breaks down the Cubs – Brewers beef starring Willson Contreras

Things got heated.

We have ourselves some beef between the Milwaukee Brewers and Chicago Cubs.

Cubs catcher Willson Contreras had been hit by Brewers pitches twice this season, and on Tuesday night, he got a pitch off his hand that sent him to first base.

When the pitcher who hit him, ace Brandon Woodruff, stepped up to the plate in the fifth inning, Cubs reliever Ryan Tepera threw a ball behind him, escalating the whole thing and leaving Woodruff saying how messed up that was (with a bunch of expletives, see below).

Contreras got his revenge in the eighth inning with a two-run homer that gave the Cubs the lead for good, and his reaction said it all.

Thanks to Jomboy — who breaks down incidents in baseball and outside of the sport — we have a breakdown, which includes everything I just wrote (WARNING: some NSFW language in here):

I agree that Woodruff didn’t mean to hit Contreras on purpose, but I have no doubt that this back-and-forth isn’t over after the throw behind the pitcher.

This is what happened last week:

And what Contreras said — he claimed he didn’t know about the throw-behind:

Brewers Kolten Wong sheds tears during at-bat in return to St. Louis after standing ovation

A heartwarming homecoming for Kolten Wong in St. Louis.

There’s nothing like returning to a place you once called home. Kolten Wong is no exception to that feeling, as the former St. Louis Cardinal — and current Milwaukee Brewer — got an emotional taste of his former home.

Thursday’s matchup between the Cardinals and Brewers was Wong’s first game against his former team. Wong played 852 games with the Cardinals from 2013 to 2020 before St. Louis declined his player option for the 2021 season, making him a free agent before the Brewers picked him up.

Before his first at-bat on Thursday, Wong was greeted by the Cardinals faithful with a standing ovation, one that clearly made him misty-eyed while at the plate.

Wong’s emotional response to the standing ovation in a stadium he once called home is at once heartwarming and bittersweet. The 30-year-old second baseman did also have some fun at the expense of his former teammates before the game, tossing peanuts and overall having a good time during the lineup announcement.

Between the fun pregame shenanigans, his well-deserved standing ovation, and emotional at-bat, Wong’s St. Louis homecoming was surely a day to remember.

Watch: Christian Yelich goes inside-the-park homer as OF gets caught in net

Outfield gets caught in a net so Christian Yelich of the Brewers circles the bases for an inside-the-park home run.

Christian Yelich will be able to tell quite a tale about the inside-the-park home run he hit during the pandemic.

And everyone will look at him like it is a fish story because he has to explain how an outfielder was caught in a net.

Check this out from Thursday’s play:

That was the White Sox’ Eloy Jiminez who wound up in the net and tried to extricate himself as the Brewers’ star circled the bases for his second home run of the season.

Milwaukee Brewers at Pittsburgh Pirates odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Tuesday’s Milwaukee Brewers at Pittsburgh Pirates sports betting odds and lines, with MLB betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Milwaukee Brewers (2-2) rallied from a 5-1 deficit against the Pittsburgh Pirates (1-3) on Monday, and will look to make it two in a row when the NL Central rivals square off at PNC Park in Pittsburgh at 7:05 p.m. ET Tuesday. We analyze the Brewers-Pirates betting odds and lines, with MLB picks and best bets.

Brewers at Pirates: Projected starting pitchers

RHP Josh Lindblom vs. LHP Derek Holland

Lindblom was a mediocre pitcher in the majors from 2011-14, and again briefly in 2017. Overall, he owns a 4.10 ERA, and after spending most of the past five seasons in Korea, he’s back to make his seventh career MLB start.

  • Lindblom was a dominant starter in the KBO (Korean Baseball Organization) the past two seasons. He was so good that he took home MVP honors last year after going 20-3 with a 2.50 ERA across 30 starts.
  • His 8.7 K/9 ratio from 2019 (and 8.4 in 2018) may not jump off the page, but his 189 K’s led the KBO last year and he was third among all starters (minimum 10 starts) in K/9.

Derek Holland will be making his Pittsburgh debut. The lefty looks to rebound from a disappointing 2019 season – pitching for the Chicago Cubs and San Francisco Giants – in which he recorded a 6.08 ERA in 84 1/3 innings.

  • Even in a down year, Holland was effective against LHB, holding them to a .528 OPS in 114 plate appearances. However, RHB were a different story, as they knocked him around to the tune of a .997 OPS.
  • Holland is 1-0 with a 1.74 ERA (4 ER, 20 2/3 IP) in 11 career appearances, including two starts vs. Milwaukee. He has made three appearances at PNC Park in his career, allowing just three earned runs in 12 innings, while striking out 14.

Prediction

Brewers 8, Pirates 4

Moneyline (ML)

The Brewer offense had been very quiet until the very end of Monday’s game. Milwaukee shouldn’t have much trouble putting runs on the board against Holland in this one.

Lindblom is a bit of a question mark, but he has put up excellent numbers in each of the last two seasons, albeit against lesser competition in the KBO. He gets a pretty good matchup in this one, so take the BREWERS (-176).

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Brewers at -176 would net a profit of $5.68 – or every $1.76 wagered will profit $1 if they win.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

The Brewers are -1.5 (-125), and considering how poorly Holland pitched throughout 2019, they should be able to win by at least two runs. Take the BREWERS (-125).

Over/Under (O/U)

Lindblom is likely to be a decent pitcher in his return to the majors, but won’t come anywhere close to the numbers he posted while in Korea. The Pirates probably won’t get completely shut down, and as noted above, the Milwaukee offense could erupt for a big game. A small bet on the OVER 10 (-110) looks like the smart play here.

Milwaukee Brewers at Pittsburgh Pirates odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Monday’s Milwaukee Brewers at Pittsburgh Pirates sports betting odds and lines, with MLB betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Milwaukee Brewers and Pittsburgh Pirates will kick off a three-game series Monday at PNC Park in Pittsburgh at 7:05 PM Eastern. We analyze the Brewers-Pirates betting odds and lines, with MLB picks and best bets.

Brewers at Pirates: Projected starting pitchers

RHP Adrian Houser vs. LHP Steven Brault

Houser was a pleasant surprise for the Brewers in 2019, when he posted a 3.72 ERA across 35 appearances (18 starts).

  • The right-hander worked just seven innings against the Pirates in 2019, allowing five earned runs during that time, with a 9:6 K:BB.
  • Houser was more effective at home than on the road, as there was nearly a full run difference in his ERA (3.17 vs 4.14).

Brault worked mostly as a starter in 2019, as 19 of his 25 appearances came in that role. Overall, he put up a 5.16 ERA in 113 1/3 innings.

  • He made five starts against the Brewers a season ago and came away with a 3.51 ERA and 26 strikeouts in 25 2/3 innings.
  • Brault is only expected to take the mound for about three innings in his season debut, before giving way to RHP Chad Kuhl.

Prediction

Pirates 5, Brewers 4

Moneyline (ML)

While the Brewers were pretty dominant at home in 2019 (49-32), they were a game under .500 on the road, at 40-41. Houser was solid in 2019, but given his less than impressive track record, it wouldn’t be surprising to see a step back from him in 2020.

With the PIRATES +155 playing in their home park, this line should be closer to even. Expect a close game and take the plus odds on the home team.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Pirates at +155 would pay out a profit of $15.50.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

The Pirates are even money (+1.5, +100), which is tempting, but the best value seems to be in them winning the game outright. In taking Milwaukee (-1.5, -121), you would still have to lay some odds, which doesn’t seem like a wise investment. PASS on the run line.

Over/Under (O/U)

Both offenses have been a little slow out of the gate. The Brewers have tallied just nine runs through three games, while the Pirates have scored 10.

Neither pitcher in this matchup should be expected to completely shut his opponent down, but we’ll give a slight edge to the UNDER 9.5 (-110) in this one.

Saturday: The Brewers won 8-3 to even the series after getting 3-hit by Kyle Hendricks in Friday’s 3-0 loss.

Brewers at Cubs: Projected starting pitchers

RHP Freddy Peralta vs. RHP Tyler Chatwood

Peralta in 2019: 7-3, 5.29 ERA in 39 games (8 starts)

  • 2019 starts: 2-2, 7.07 (28 ER, 35 2/3 IP)
  • Career vs. Cubs: 1-0, 5.79 ERA (3 ER, 4 2/3 IP) in 3 relief appearances, all last season

Chatwood in 2019: 5-3, 3.76 ERA in 38 games (5 starts)

  • 2019 starts: 1-1, 3.97 ERA (10 ER, 22 2/3 IP)
  • 2019 vs. Brewers: 1-1, 1.26 ERA (2 ER, 14 1/3 IP) in 6 games, including 1 start (PITCHED WELL >>> 1 ER, 3 2/3 IP, 7 K!!, but LOST)

Brewers at Cubs: Odds, lines, picks and betting tips

MLB odds courtesy of BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports for a full list. Odds last updated Sunday at 9 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Cubs 9, Brewers 6

Moneyline (ML)

The CUBS (-115) are the STRONGEST PLAY vs. the Brewers (+105). Peralta struggled in his lone career appearance at Wrigley Field, giving up 2 ER in 2/3 innings of relief last August. Of the 7 batters he faced, Peralta walked 3 and allowed 2 singles. Look for the 24-year-old Dominican to suffer the same fate.

New to sports betting? A winning $10 bet on Chicago will return a profit of $8.70 – or every $1.15 bet on Chicago will profit $1 if it wins.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

Place a small bet on the CUBS (-1.5, +155) on the alternate run line. The first two games were won by 3 and 5 runs, respectively. I like the chances of the finale going the same route – avoiding a one-run game.

Over/Under (O/U)

BET OVER 12 (-110). Expect a fun one at the “Friendly Confines,” where neither starting pitcher makes it through 5 innings.
