I’m picking St. Louis to win, but it won’t be easy. Milwaukee plays them extremely tough. However, Montgomery has been a whirlwind since he was acquired at the trade deadline, and Milwaukee going with a bullpen game should give the Cards enough leverage to sneak by. There’s no way we’re dropping -210, though.

I think this is a low-scoring game, and it’ll take a bit to feel each other out. Go with UNDER 4.5 TOTAL RUNS FIRST 5 INNINGS (-125).

The Brewers have scored 3 runs or fewer in 5 of the last 6 in Busch Stadium. They’ll do so again Tuesday, and I have more confidence in that than I do either run line.

But, the Cardinals are more productive vs. left-handed pitching than the Brewers (+140), and St. Louis’ lineup has been raking recently.

The Cardinals score more runs per 9 vs. lefties than the Brewers (5.55-3.88) and outrank Milwaukee in wRC+ (124-88), wOBA (.342-.298), ISO (.175-.135) and BB/K rate (0.49-0.39), according to FanGraphs.

Furthermore, St. Louis is 3rd in WAR (4.2), 2nd in both wRC+ (142) and wOBA (.369) and 1st in ISO (.232) over the last 2 weeks, per FanGraphs.

Finally, St. Louis’s ML has been “steamed” from a -145 opener up to the current price, according to Pregame.com.

The CARDINALS (-175) are the right side, but I’m confident enough in St. Louis to take the RL.

Run line/Against the spread

BET CARDINALS -1.5 (+125) based on the analysis above and since St. Louis is 31-24 RL at home and 26-18 RL vs. NL Central foes. Whereas the Brewers are 26-33 RL on the road and 22-31 RL in division games.

The CARDINALS -1.5 (+125) is my favorite look in this game.

Over/Under

LEAN OVER 7.5 (-110) because 7 of the 12 Brewers-Cardinals meetings have gone Over Friday’s total, and St. Louis’ lineup rakes left-handed pitching.

However, it’s only a “lean” because a vast majority of the market is on the Over per Pregame.com. But, the total opened at 8 and is heading south despite all the pro-Over money.

LEAN CARDINALS (+115) only because the Brewers (-140) have the better bullpen and Woodruff was an All-Star last season who has yet to find his groove in 2022. Woodruff’s basic and advanced pitching numbers vs. St. Louis are much better than Hudson’s against Milwaukee.

But, sharp action has dragged the Cardinals from a +130 underdog on the opener down to the current number, according to Pregame.com. This is due to there not being a big difference between these ball clubs, Woodruff struggling on the road and Hudson pitching much better at home.

Woodruff is 1-2 on the road (4-0 at home) with a 9.00 ERA (1.59 home ERA) and 2.06 WHIP (0.71 home WHIP). Hudson is 2-0 at home (1-2 on the road) with a 1.80 ERA (4.68 road ERA) and 1.07 WHIP (1.52 road WHIP).

BET a half-unit on the CARDINALS (+115) since this is a toss-up game but the home team has a slight edge.

Run line/Against the spread

PASS because the Cardinals +1.5 (-150) are just 3-4 RL as home underdogs and the last 3 Brewers-Cardinals meetings have been decided by a single run.

Baseball Reference’s “simple rating system” SRS includes run differential and strength of schedule. Even though the Brewers have a better record than the Cardinals, Milwaukee is 12th in SRS and St. Louis is 6th. There’s value in the Cardinals because they are better than their record indicates.

BET 1 unit on the CARDINALS (-120).

Run line/Against the spread

PASS because the Cardinals +1.5 (-210) is way too expensive and their alternate RL is a no-go since Milwaukee’s bullpen is much better than St. Louis’s so there would be a concern the Brewers could sneak in the backdoor.

Over/Under

LEAN OVER 7.5 (-105) because the Cardinals are 1st in both wRC+ (147) and wOBA (.377) vs. left-handed pitching (according to FanGraphs) and because most of the market is on the Under 7.5 (-120) but the total hasn’t budged.

Also, the St. Louis bullpen is a little suspect, the Cardinals are 13-6-1 O/U at home, and the Brewers are 13-8-1 O/U vs. NL Central foes.

My favorite play in this game is St. Louis’s ML but there’s value in the OVER 7.5 (-105).
