Devin Williams trade grades: Who won the Yankees and Brewers deal?

Who won this deal?

We have ourselves a fairly big MLB trade! On Friday!

The New York Yankees haven’t let losing out on Juan Soto stop them from tinkering with their World Series roster. And the Milwaukee Brewers want to keep the winning going after losing in the Wild Card last season.

Which brings us to this deal involving stud Brewers closer Devin Williams and a Yankees team that desperately needed a bullpen arm to close things out. This is intriguing stuff.

Who won this deal? That’s what we’re here to do, as always. Here are trade grades for both sides with the news breaking on Friday:

Yankees and Brewers trade details:

Yankees get: RHP Devin Williams

Brewers get: LHP Nestor Cortes, infielder Caleb Durbin

Yankees grade

This is fairly straightforward. Williams is an elite closer who is turning 31 next September. The Yankees needed a dependable closer after what we saw last season and postseason, even in the run to the World Series.

So they acquired Williams for a relatively low cost — Cortes wasn’t that great in 2024 after struggles in 2023, and we saw that in the postseason. Durbin isn’t a top prospect, although dude has some speed.

It’s a move you make if you’re a contender. Simple.

GRADE: A-minus

Brewers grade

You read all of that above and think the Brewers got hosed in this deal, right? But, no.

You see, they were never going to sign Williams to a long-term deal, which is a good idea even when you’re talking about an elite bullpen arm like him.

So they got Cortes — who, despite some struggles, has shown flashes of being a solid rotation pitcher — and a prospect. A good return for a player they weren’t going to keep!

That earns a decent grade, especially when we saw the Brewers had some names who could make up for Williams’ absence last season.

GRADE: B

The Pete Alonso home run edited like it was in Moneyball will give you chills

How can you not be romantic about this Pete Alonso home run?

Pete Alonso crushed a home run in the ninth inning and it felt like a movie.

As the ball came off the bat of the New York Mets slugger, the intersection between sports and cinema blended into one. No matter whether or not you were emotionally invested in this game, it felt like time slowed down.

For baseball fans who also like to nerd out at the movie theater, some fans were able to provide the perfect edit for you. It is a highlight of the play but edited to feel like it was included in Moneyball (2011) from Steven Zaillian and Aaron Sorkin, including the lovely song “The Mighty Rio Grande” by This Will Destroy You.

First, we can take a look at a version that uses the radio call from Mets announcer Howie Rose:

Another fantastic edit does not use Rose’s voice but instead the national broadcast from ESPN.

While this one doesn’t have the local passion, it does include some of the other highlights from the ninth inning like Jesse Winker slamming his helmet after scoring another run and the double-play ball from Francisco Lindor.

This is beautiful no matter who you are, but it is especially beautiful if you’re a Mets fan who happened to love Moneyball.

Because how can you not be romantic about baseball?

Was Devin Williams tipping his pitches before Pete Alonso home run? Jomboy breaks it down.

Maybe this explains why Pete Alonso hit that improbable home run.

Uh-oh.

Pete Alonso’s unreal ninth-inning home run off mostly unhittable Milwaukee Brewers closer Devin Williams was the most improbable thing. A home run from a slumping first baseman in a win-or-go-home game in the ninth, one to the opposite field off a pitcher who almost never gives them up? WHAT?

But maybe there was a reason for that. And for that, we have Jomboy to thank with a breakdown that shows that Williams might have been tipping his pitches on Thursday night.

You can see some subtle but noteworthy changes he makes as he comes set. And that means maybe Alonso knew what was coming.

Willy Adames said he actually went to meet Jesse Winker in the parking lot after their Game 1 argument

Jesse Winker apparently didn’t show!

After the grind of a 162-game season, emotions are always running high come playoff time. And in Game 1 of the wild-card series between the Mets and Brewers, we saw what could happen when tensions reach a boiling point.

With no outs in the second inning of Game 1, Mets outfielder Jesse Winker exchanged words with Willy Adames during a mound visit following a game-tying triple. Some brilliant lip reading from Jomboy Media revealed that Adames told Winker that he would meet him in the parking lot. You know, to settle whatever beef they had.

Well, Adames is a man of his word because he actually went to the parking lot after the game to look for Winker.

Adames said via the New York Post:

“I was there (in the lot),” Adames added, saying Winker didn’t show.

Sources told The Post that Winker was upset by Frankie Montas drilling him with a pitch on the backside last Friday. Winker walked away when asked about the incident, saying only, “Why?”

It’s kind of wild that Adames was still so heated after the game that he waited in the parking lot. But that’s what playoff baseball can do.

Word of the altercation clearly spread among Brewers fans because Winker was loudly booed during his first at-bat in Game 3.

Who is the woman behind home plate at Brewers games? Meet ‘Front Row Amy’

Meet Front Row Amy.

There’s a group of MLB fans that are known nationally (like Marlins Man!), and for the Milwaukee Brewers, that’s Amy Williams of Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

She has a nickname, too: Front Row Amy, and per the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, she’s been a fan of the team since 2007 and has been seen keeping score from her seat behind home plate.

“She found that going to games made her feel like she was part of something big, and she learned that she enjoyed it most when she went alone, retired Journal Sentinel columnist Jim Stingl wrote in 2012,” wrote the paper’s Claire Reid.

So there’s your answer!

What did Mets’ Jesse Winker and Brewers’ Willy Adames yell at each other? Here’s what they said.

Emotions ran high for these former teammates.

During an intense opening game of the postseason for the New York Mets and Milwaukee Brewers, two former teammates exchanged words.

Milwaukee’s Willy Adames and New York’s Jesse Winker played together during the 2023 season. Winker, a former MLB All-Star, played for just one season with the Brewers before he signed with the Washington Nations. He was traded to the Mets at the deadline.

But when matched up against his former team, emotions ran high for Winker. The ESPN broadcast showed a very heated back-and-forth between the Mets outfielder and the  Brewers infielder.

METS – BREWERS: Lip-reading video shows Willy Adames and Jesse Winker screaming NSFW stuff at each other

While some lip reader have tried to interpret what was said in the heat of battle, it is always good to hear directly from the players.

Unfortunately, however, both have seemed fairly tight-lipped so far.

When asked what Adames said to him, Winker said “nothing” and did not look comfortable. He added:

“I don’t really want to speak on it. I just want to focus on the game tomorrow.”

This is a non-answer from Winker, but likely a smart strategy to not add more fuel to whatever fire may exist there.

Adames was also asked about what happened.

“I don’t know what was going through his head. He just started saying some stuff and I just said something back. I think that’s the kind of player he is and that’s what it is … That was surprising that he would say some stuff. But I guess that is part of his personality. It was just a little bit of a surprise to me.”

Although his answer was a bit longer, he did not reveal much either.

Lip-reading video shows Willy Adames and Jesse Winker screaming NSFW stuff at each other

A lot is happening here!

The New York Mets earned a huge road win in the first round of the 2024 MLB Playoffs against the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday night with plenty of fireworks.

Some of those fireworks came in the form of F-bombs from Mets outfielder Jesse Winker.

The Mets slugger unleashed a very funny, profanity-laced tirade as he rounded the bases after a good hit in the game’s second inning and sent two New York players on base home to tie the ballgame.

The swear words sparked Brewers shortstop Willy Adames to tell Winker that he’d meet him in the parking lot, presumably for more than an exchange of words.

Jomboy tried to break down this moment between Winker and Adames and what led to it in a lip-readers breakdown that is worth your time.

Caitlin Clark providing play-by-play for a Phillies game is delightfully hilarious

Perhaps Caitlin Clark has a future in the broadcast booth after her playing career.

Caitlin Clark’s skill on a basketball court is undeniable.

The former Iowa superstar and current Indiana Fever phenom is the runaway favorite to win the WNBA Rookie of the Year Award, and she’s set the WNBA record for assists in a single season as well as for points by a rookie.

But it seems hooping isn’t Clark’s only talent. Perhaps she has a future in the broadcast booth, as well.

In a hilarious video posted on TikTok by Clark’s Fever teammate Lexi Hull, she shows off her play-by-play skills, providing commentary for a game between the Philadelphia Phillies and Milwaukee Brewers.

Despite not knowing most of the players, it’s hard to deny she’s got the tone and cadence down.

Maybe Clark can make an appearance in the booth during the MLB postseason if she has some spare time following the WNBA season as Indiana clinched a playoff berth for the first time in seven years, ending the league’s longest drought.

Bob Uecker after getting doused in champagne by Brewers’ players: ‘I peed my pants!’

Uecker celebrated Milwaukee’s NL Central title as only he can.

The Milwaukee Brewers clinched the NL Central before their game against the Philadelphia Phillies even began. That made it a little easier for the team to wait before popping the champagne to fete their 2024 campaign.

But there was a subdued energy coursing through the American Family Insurance Field locker room as players and coaches paused their celebration following a 2-1 walkoff win. Everyone was excited, but hardly anyone popped their corks before the man of the hour arrived — Brewers broadcaster and MLB legend Bob Uecker.

Team manager Pat Murphy opened the celebration by honoring the 90-year-old former catcher as “epitomiz[ing] a champion” to a welcoming chorus of “Uuuuueeeeccccckkkk” calls from the players. And then, Uecker acknowledged the compliment and shower of bubbles that followed as only he can.

The Brewers clinched their third division title in four years, giving the legendary broadcast another chance to potentially call a World Series game for a team that hasn’t been there since 1982. He’ll be in the booth, calling out home runs with his signature “get up” call and praising Usinger’s sausages come October for the sixth time in the last seven years.
