4 things to know about new Dolphins QB Mike White

Fans should get familiar with the new backup.

The Miami Dolphins clearly had an issue with the backup quarterback position on the roster, as that was the very first position they addressed during the legal tampering period, signing former New York Jets quarterback Mike White.

White slots in behind Tua Tagovailoa and will likely be above Skylar Thompson after a rookie season that saw him get more action than expected.

Miami moved on from Teddy Bridgewater, who remains a free agent after he was unable to produce in the role last year.

Before White steps on the field, Dolphins fans should know a few things about their new backup.

Breaking down new Dolphins QB Mike White’s contract

It’s a fair deal for Miami.

One of the first moves that the Miami Dolphins made this offseason was addressing the backup quarterback position after Teddy Bridgewater didn’t exactly perform up to expectations in 2022.

During the legal tampering period, Miami agreed to terms with former New York Jets quarterback Mike White, and the deal has become official since the start of the league year.

According to Over the Cap, White’s contract is a two-year deal worth $8 million.

In 2023, White has a $1.08 million base salary, which is fully guaranteed, and a $1.71 million prorated signing bonus. Next year, his base salary jumps to $3.5 million, but none of it is guaranteed, and he has another $1.71 million in a prorated signing bonus.

His cap hits for 2023 and 2024 are $2.79 million and $5.21 million, respectively.

If Miami wanted to cut White after the season, they could save $3.5 million, while incurring a dead cap penalty of $1.71 million.

Hopefully, Tagovailoa can stay healthy, and White never has to see the field, but in limited opportunities, he’s looked like a capable backup. $4 million annually is an extremely fair deal for someone who may be asked to lead the team for multiple games.

He’ll look better in aqua and orange.

The first outside signing the Miami Dolphins made this offseason was bringing in quarterback Mike White to backup Tua Tagovailoa.

White slides in to take Teddy Bridgewater’s place on the depth chart, as the former Louisville quarterback remains a free agent.

Before suiting up in aqua and orange, now is a great time to look back at some of the best pictures of White during his time with the AFC East rival New York Jets.

Here are some of the best moments from White’s career in green and white:

New Dolphins QB Mike White posts hilarious video with teammates

Three Jets hit the road for Miami Gardens.

When the Miami Dolphins signed wide receiver Braxton Berrios on Thursday, he became the third member of the 2022 New York Jets to join the aqua and orange in recent days.

Berrios joined quarterback Mike White and offensive lineman Dan Feeney in the trip from New Jersey to Florida, as they’ve all signed for at least one year with the Dolphins.

After the news, White took to social media to share an edited clip from “The Hangover,” depicting the three former Jets as the main characters in the movie.

Making the transition to a new organization is always difficult, but these guys already have each other to lean on.

A mini Jets reunion happening in Miami with Mike White, Dan Feeney and Braxton Berrios all joining Dolphins

Three former Jets now in Miami

The running thought is that if Aaron Rodgers does come to the Jets, he will try to recruit some of his buddies to join him with Gang Green. Maybe there was recruiting going on with a former Jets quarterback.

Okay, not really, but it is still interesting to see three former Jets have now all joined the Miami Dolphins in free agency. First, it was quarterback Mike White. Now, two more players joined the list Thursday as guard Dan Feeney and wide receiver Braxton Berrios will also join head coach Mike McDaniel.

Berrios will be on his third AFC East team. He’s been with the Jets and the Patriots. Maybe one day he’ll join the Bills to complete the tour. Berrios spent four seasons with the Jets.

Feeney spent two seasons with the Jets after four years with the Chargers.

LOOK: QB Mike White shares throwback photo in Dolphins gear

He’s always been a Dolphins guy.

The Miami Dolphins got to work on Monday afternoon, the start of the league’s legal tampering period, as they agreed to contracts with two pending free agents – linebacker David Long and quarterback Mike White.

Long agrees to join Miami after spending his first few seasons with the Tennessee Titans, while White comes from the New York Jets.

The latter is from Florida, and he talked earlier in the offseason about the idea of coming home and playing for the Dolphins as an enticing idea. After the two sides agreed to terms, White took to social media to share an old photo of him as a child in Dolphins gear.

This is the second offseason in a row that Miami has signed a quarterback from the state, as Teddy Bridgewater made his return last year. It’s always great to see a player come home and be embraced by a fan base that they grew up a part of.

Mike White to sign with the Miami Dolphins

Mike White to sign with the Miami Dolphins

Mike White is heading home. The now-former Jets quarterback will sign with the Miami Dolphins, per Adam Schefter.

White, who is from the Miami area, will sign a two-year deal worth up to $16 million. He will serve as Tua Tagovailoa’s backup in Miami with Teddy Bridgewater a free agent.

White battled through fractured ribs over the final month of the season, showing a lot of courage, particularly in the Buffalo game in Week 14. He was always a target for the Dolphins.

As the Jets continue to sit and wait for Aaron Rodgers to make a decision, they are quickly losing their fallback options and now won’t even be able to re-sign White. In any event, good for White as he cashes in, especially in his hometown and in a state that does not have a state income tax.

Dolphins agree to terms with former Jets QB Mike White

It’s a two-year deal.

The Miami Dolphins have a number of needs they need to address this offseason, but it appears they’ve agreed to their first free agent deal.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Dolphins have agreed on a two-year deal with former New York Jets quarterback Mike White. The deal is said to be worth up to $16 million.

White, 27, was a fifth-round selection of the Dallas Cowboys in 2018. However, he didn’t get playing time until he joined the New York Jets. Over the last two seasons, White has completed 62.2% of his passes for 2,145 yards with eight touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

The Jets had a 2-5 record with him as a starter.

Interestingly enough, White spoke earlier this offseason about being intrigued by returning to Miami (he’s from Pembroke Pines, Florida), and now he appears to be joining the team in his home state.

When the deal becomes official, he’ll likely slide between Tua Tagovailoa and Skylar Thompson on the depth chart.

Georgia basketball season ends with disappointing loss to LSU

The UGA basketball season is over following the Bulldogs’ 72-67 SEC tournament loss to the LSU Tigers

The Georgia Bulldogs basketball season is officially over following the Dawgs’ SEC tournament loss to the LSU Tigers. LSU (14-18) entered the contest with only two conference wins. Georgia (16-16) finishes the season with six SEC wins.

Georgia fell behind LSU, 42-30, in the first half. The Bulldogs attempted a comeback in the second half, but came up short in the 72-67 defeat.

LSU dominated Georgia on the offensive glass, where the Tigers outrebounded Georgia 18-8. Georgia forced just five LSU turnovers and allowed the Tigers to stay in a decent offensive rhythm.

Terry Roberts scored 12 points and hauled in six rebounds for Georgia. Braelen Bridges added 13 points and four rebounds. Justin Hill accumulated 13 points and three rebounds in the Bulldogs’ final game of the season.

LSU forward KJ Williams scored a game-high 18 points in the Tigers’ SEC tournament victory. Next, LSU will play Vanderbilt in the SEC tournament on March 9.

Dale Zanine-USA TODAY Sports

Overall, Georgia improved from last season, when the Bulldogs finished the year only 6-26 and won just a single SEC game. Head coach Mike White’s first season at the helm was an improvement, but Georgia needs to continue added pieces to the roster if it wants to make an appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

The Bulldogs hoped to stick around the SEC tournament a few more nights.

Jets QB says he’d be interested in playing for Dolphins

He’s from Broward County, but he also likes the talent.

While the Miami Dolphins have been very committed to Tua Tagovailoa as their starting quarterback this offseason, they still may be looking for a backup.

Teddy Bridgewater is set to become a free agent, but heading into his second year, Skylar Thompson could be ready to take on that responsibility.

With that said, soon-to-be free agent, and former New York Jets quarterback, Mike White said he’d be interested in coming to South Florida to play for the Dolphins.

“Selfishly, from a personal standpoint, obviously growing up down there, I’d love to go home,” White told former Dolphin Joe Rose. “But from a football standpoint, it’s a very talented offense.”

White is originally from Pembroke Pines, Florida, which is less than 10 miles from Hard Rock Stadium. Coming back to their hometown is always something that’s intriguing to players. Still, with Tagovailoa’s health history, White may get more of an opportunity to play in Miami than in other places as a backup.

On top of that, throwing to Jaylen Waddle and Tyreek Hill can help make any quarterback look good.
