As the New York Giants hustle to fill out their coaching staff under new head coach Brian Daboll on the offensive side of the football, the defensive staff is beginning to take shape as well.

The hiring process had slowed until the Giants knew the fate of coordinator Patrick Graham, who was a finalist for the Minnesota Vikings’ head coaching position.

On Wednesday evening, the Vikings informed Graham he was no longer being considered for the job, paving the way for his return to the Giants. And with him likely back in East Rutherford, a few assistants will also remain, reports Dan Duggan of The Athletic.

Veteran defensive backs coach Jerome Henderson will be retained, according to a source. Expect assistant defensive backs coach Mike Treier to return as well since he has a close relationship with Graham.

Assuming Graham does return — and there’s no reason to believe he won’t — you can expect the remainder of the staff to be rounded out quickly. Graham was also the assistant head coach under Joe Judge. There is no indication that he would be stripped of that title should be return.

In 2020, Graham’s unit was ranked 13th overall in the NFL in total defense. They fell to 21st last season under more trying conditions, including season-ending injuries to captains Blake Martinez and Jabrill Peppers, and an inept offense that left the defense on the field nearly 33 minutes per game.

Giants make several more coaching staff changes

The New York Giants continued shuffling their coaching staff around recently, changing the roles for several assistants.

The New York Giants have done some more shuffling to their assistant coaching ranks under head coach Joe Judge.

In addition, Mike Treier has gone from defensive quality control coach to the assistant defensive backs coach. Bielema was the Giants’ outside linebackers coach who left in December after accepting the head coaching job at the University of Illinois.

On offense, the Giants are led by coordinator Jason Garrett who heads a staff consisting of Burton Burns (running backs), Derek Dooley (tight ends), Freddie Kitchens (senior offensive assistant), Rob Sale (offensive line), Tyke Tolbert (wide receivers), Jerry Schuplinski (quarterbacks), Ben Wilkerson (assistant offensive line coach), Jody Wright and quality control coach Nick Williams.

On defense under coordinator Patrick Graham, there is Blevins, Treier, Kevin Sherrer (linebackers), Jerome Henderson (defensive backs), Sean Spencer (defensive line) and senior defensive assistant Jeremy Pruitt.

Special teams are led by coordinator Thomas McGaughey and assistant Tom Quinn. Amos Jones returns as the assistant coach for special projects and situations and Ryan Hollern is the chief of staff.

Pat Flaherty has also returned to the team and will work with the offense, defense and special teams.

4 Giants assistant coaches on staff for 2021 East-West Shrine Bowl

Four New York Giants assistant coaches will be on staff for the 2021 East-West Shrine Bowl Professional Development Opportunity.

Four New York Giants assistant coaches will participate in this year’s East-West Shrine Bowl Professional Development Opportunity.

At the conclusion of the regular season, NFL clubs “nominated active assistant coaches who were reviewed by a panel of NFL Football Operations staff, East-West Shrine Bowl leadership and members of the NFL’s General Managers Advisory Committee to serve as coaches for this year’s event.”

The Giants will be represented by assistant defensive back coach Anthony Blevins, offensive quality control coach Bobby Blick, defensive quality control coach Mike Treier and linebackers coach Jody Wright.

The game, which was originally scheduled to be played at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida on January 23, was cancelled due to COVID-19. Instead, “the student-athletes chosen as players will still participate in various virtual training/informational drills with current NFL coaches and members of the NFL Operations staff. Some 2021 all-stars will also participate in various virtual experiences with Shriners Hospitals for Children patients in recognition of the game’s nearly century-long commitment to supporting the health care system’s life-changing mission.”

Over the years, many future Giants have played in the event reserved for college seniors such as Hall of Famers Lawrence Taylor and Frank Gifford. Coaches affiliated with the Giants include Dan Reeves and Romeo Crennel.

The East-West Shrine Bowl has been played for 95 years and is the nation’s oldest all-star game. 98 players from the 2020 East-West Shrine Bowl signed with an NFL team last fall.

Report: Giants to hire Mike Treier to defensive staff

The New York Giants are expected to add Mike Treier to their defensive coaching staff.

The New York Giants are putting the final touches on their 2020 coaching staff, and one of their most recent hires comes by way of Mike Treier.

Football Scoop was the first to report on Treier’s hire.

Sources tell FootballScoop Mike Treier has accepted a position on Joe Judge’s staff. Treier, who coached safeties at Marshall this past season, had accepted a role on Mike Norvell’s staff at Florida State….before being lured to join Steve Addazio’s staff at Colorado State. However, we are told he will coach in New York going forward.

Treier later confirmed the hire on Twitter, changing his bio, location, photo and cover photo to reflect joining the Giants.

Treier spent the last several seasons with Marshall, serving as their safeties coach and recruiting coordinator in 2019. Prior to that, he held various other roles for the program, including defensive backs coach in 2018 and defensive analyst in 2017. He also broke into coaching as a graduate assistant for Marshall during his first stint from 2014-2015.

In between his time at Marshall, Treier served as the co-defensive coordinator/secondary coach at UT-Martin in 2016.

It’s been a strange offseason for Treier, who, as Football Scoop noted, had accepted positions at Florida State only to move onto Colorado State and then take off on them to join the Giants.
