Among several cornerbacks in the class of 2023 with an offer from Clemson is Roswell (Ga.) High School four-star Ethan Nation.

The 5-foot-11, 170-pound rising junior received the offer upon his visit to campus in early June.

The Clemson Insider recently caught up with Nation, one of the nation’s top cornerback prospects, to get the latest in his recruitment and more.

“It’s been pretty good. Just still taking it day by day,” he said of the recruiting process. “But other than that, it’s been pretty good. Just focusing on the upcoming season.”

Nation remains in regular communication with Clemson cornerbacks coach Mike Reed, and their relationship continues to grow.

“It’s getting better each time we talk,” Nation said.

What is Reed’s message to Nation as he gets ready for his junior campaign?

“Just get bigger and stronger,” Nation said, “and just focus on the season and focus on each game day by day.”

Clemson is one of a number of schools that Nation, the younger brother of a former Clemson Rally Cat, has on his mind for a game-day visit in the fall.

“I haven’t talked to them yet about a game,” he said. “But they’re on my to-do list to go to a game.”

Nation named Ohio State, Texas A&M, Oklahoma and Oregon as some of the other schools he wants to take in games at during the season.

Clemson is among those at the top of Nation’s list of more than 40 scholarship offers.

“I’d say they’re pretty high, along with some other schools,” he said when asked where the Tigers stand with him.

Asked what appeals to him most about Clemson, Nation didn’t hesitate before answering.

“The culture for sure,” he said. “How it’s just a family and a winning culture and everyone is one, they’re all together. So, I’d probably say that’s the main reason why they’re so high.”

Nation is ranked as high as the No. 7 cornerback and No. 76 overall prospect in the 2023 class by ESPN. As a sophomore last season, he notched eight interceptions to go with more than 50 tackles.

2023 Virginia cornerback getting a ‘good feel’ for Clemson, Reed

This Class of 2023 prospect recently spoke on the phone with Clemson cornerbacks coach Mike Reed.

Colonial Heights (Va.) Life Christian Academy 2023 CB Antonio Cotman, Jr. is really starting to come on. His recruitment has begun to heat up and Reed has definitely taken notice.

Cotman is a physical cornerback, who thrives in man-to-man coverage. He also plays wide receiver for his high school, but his primary focus is on the defensive side of the ball.

He recently caught up with The Clemson Insider regarding his current recruitment and what he’s been hearing from the Tigers lately.

“I got great feedback,” Cotman said regarding his conversation with Reed. “He was talking to my grandma and my father. I was just vibing with him, just catching up with him. It was a great conversation.”

Reed was glad that Cotman called him.

“I really got a feel for him,” he said. “I like Coach Reed, he really treats me like family. That’s all I can say.”

Cotman has been talking with Reed for some time now, ever since he camped at Clemson this summer.

“It was a good experience, he was teaching me some techniques at the camps,” Cotman added, regarding his time at Dabo Swinney Camp. “He helped me out.”

According to Cotman, Reed really likes his size, his stature and the way he moves his feet. The one thing he prompted the Virginia prospect to work on was his eyes.

“When I called him, I told him that I bought a new set of eyes,” Cotman said.

It means a lot to Cotman that Reed wants to get to know him better before that potential offer comes in. He told Cotman that he plans on coming up to Life Christian Academy for a game sometime this upcoming season.

“That’s gonna motivate me to go even harder,” Cotman said on the prospect of Reed coming to see him play.

Clemson is putting corners into the NFL consistently, while also getting high-level cornerbacks to commit to Tiger Town. Being recruited by the Tigers and Reed clearly means something to Cotman.

“It means a lot, it really does, that they’re coming out and showing love to me,” Cotman said. “It’s really big because a few years back, I didn’t think I was going to be in the position. It’s a shock.”

During his conversation with TCI, Cotman was on the road to Boston College. After his visit to Chestnut Hill, he left with another offer in hand as his recruitment continues to heat up.

Prior to the pandemic, Cotman didn’t have any offers. In addition to BC, he also holds offers from Liberty, Maryland and Virginia Tech.

“It’s been a great experience,” he said. “Me and my father are traveling the world. We get to see new places, it’s amazing.”

With that being said, what is Cotman looking for in a school at the next level?

“The most important thing is building relationships for me,” Cotman said,” Like really get to know me, get to know my family. If you know my mom, you get in a good relationship with my mom, that really does real big for me.”

Virginia DB with Clemson connections building good relationship with Tigers

A standout defensive back prospect from Virginia that visited Clemson last month could be on hand for the Tigers’ season-opening showdown vs. Georgia.

Highland Springs High School (Highland Springs, Va.) 2023 cornerback/safety Braylon Johnson is looking to possibly attend the game at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte on Sept. 4.

“I might catch the opening game against Georgia because I have some family that lives in Charlotte,” he said.

Johnson (6-1, 160), the son of former Virginia Tech safety Loren Johnson, traveled to Clemson on June 10 to participate in the Dabo Swinney Camp and came away impressed by his experience on campus, calling it “beyond amazing.”

Johnson has a couple of connections to Clemson in that he attends the same high school, Highland Springs, that produced former Tiger safety K’Von Wallace and current Clemson cornerback Malcolm Greene. The three players have formed a good bond and Johnson said they are “like family, to be honest.”

Johnson has also built a solid rapport with Clemson cornerbacks coach Mike Reed, who also courted Greene and Wallace, while Johnson’s dad is close with Tigers safeties coach Mickey Conn.

“I have a good relationship with a couple of coaches on the staff,” Johnson said. “Obviously Coach Reed because he would ultimately be my position coach if they wanted me to play corner, and he also recruited K’Von and Malcolm. And Coach Conn is good friends with my father.”

“I love all the coaches and the family atmosphere they have down there,” he added.

A rising junior with over a dozen scholarship offers from schools such as Virginia Tech, Virginia, Georgia Tech, Boston College, Oklahoma, Penn State and Michigan State, Johnson hopes to catch Clemson’s attention with his play on the field this season and eventually earn an offer from the Tigers in the process.

“Just waiting on the season to come so I can show these guys that I can really play,” he said.

Johnson also went to Maryland, Georgia Tech, UNC, UVA, Penn State and Michigan State in June. He is scheduled to visit Coastal Carolina on July 26, Virginia on July 29 and Oklahoma on July 31.

5-star cornerback could fit Terrell/Mullen mold in Clemson’s defense

Clemson is in a good position with some of the best prospects in the 2023 class. Alabaster (Ala.) Thompson 2023 five-star cornerback Tony Mitchell is the nation’s No. 1 player at his position and No. 10 prospect for the ’23 class, per 247Sports …

Clemson is in a good position with some of the best prospects in the 2023 class.

Alabaster (Ala.) Thompson 2023 five-star cornerback Tony Mitchell is the nation’s No. 1 player at his position and No. 10 prospect for the ’23 class, per 247Sports Composite rankings.

The Clemson Insider recently checked back in with Mitchell regarding his current recruitment and what he’s been hearing from Clemson as of late.

Mitchell’s main points of contact at Clemson are cornerbacks coach Mike Reed and defensive tackles coach Todd Bates.

“I’ve just been talking with Coach Reed and Coach Bates and they’ve just been talking about how I really fit into the defensive system there,” he told TCI. “They want me. Just talking about how great the program is and how I’d benefit from coming there.”

Mitchell has been told that he’s similar to A.J. Terell and Trayvon Mullen, and would potentially fit into Brent Venables’ defense like those two former Tigers cornerbacks.

According to Mitchell, Clemson likes his physicality, size and versatility. He can play anywhere in the defensive backfield.

If Mitchell were to end up at Clemson, it would give him a lot of confidence that the coaching staff knows how to develop cornerbacks and help them reach the next level, he said.

Mitchell currently considers Clemson to be one of his top schools at the moment. The Alabama cornerback would like to make a top-10 list in the near future, potentially before his junior season.

He’ll make his way up to The Valley for a game this season. He’s not sure which one just yet, but he’s “for sure” going to be there.

Those are conversations that Mitchell has had with Clemson’s coaching staff, but more importantly, he’s gotten to know Reed and Bates on a personal level.

“We’re real close,” Mitchell said. “They’ve got to know my family and I’ve been talking with those guys since my freshman year, so we got a really good relationship.”

“It’s been really good getting to talk to a lot of these coaches and starting to build relationships with a lot of different people and just getting to know everyone,” he added.

This summer has allowed Mitchell to hit the recruiting trail. Something that wasn’t available to prospects around the country last year due to the ongoing pandemic.

Mitchell is grateful for what’s been able to do for his recruitment process.

“It’s been very good,” Mitchell said. “I’m glad we got visits in June, getting to see coaches. It’s been over a year and some months. It was good to see them again, getting to see some schools I haven’t been to before. It’s really going to help my recruitment process.”

5-star loves how Clemson is setup

Clemson is always going to be recruiting some of the nation’s top prospects and the Tigers have been keeping tabs on one of the country’s best cornerbacks in the Class of 2023. A.. Harris, a class of 2023 recruit from Glenwood School in Phenix City, …

Clemson is always going to be recruiting some of the nation’s top prospects and the Tigers have been keeping tabs on one of the country’s best cornerbacks in the Class of 2023.

A.. Harris, a class of 2023 recruit from Glenwood School in Phenix City, Ala., is the nation’s No. 3 cornerback and No. 21 overall prospect in his respective class, per 247Sports Composite rankings.

Harris (6-2, 185) caught up with The Clemson Insider regarding his recruitment and just what he’s been hearing from the Tigers lately.

“Just how they can better me as a young man, as well as a football player,” Harris said. “Clemson being the best of both worlds as far as the genuine feel and the academics and the football. They’re just making sure that I get the bigger picture of that program.”

Harris released a top-13 list back on July 6, which featured the Tigers, along with Auburn, Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Texas A&M, Florida, Miami, LSU, Virginia Tech, Southern Cal and Utah.

He’ll see the schools that he hasn’t been able to visit before he makes his decision, he said.

“A genuine feel,” Harris said when asked what factors he’s looking for in a school at the next level,” and making sure that they give me the education that I need to have beyond the football years. You can never make a decision based off your position coaches, they can always leave.

“Just making sure that the whole coaching staff is invested in me and will take care of me and I have a genuine feel from the whole coaching staff rather than my position coach.”

Harris has carved out relationships with Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables, defensive ends coach Lemanski Hall and cornerbacks coach Mike Reed.

“Just such a genuine feel from all of them,” Harris said when asked to characterize his relationships with Clemson’s coaching staff. “I like how we don’t always have to talk football. We can talk about just life, which is something that’s cool because you don’t always have to recruit me. I’m still human at the end of the day and I still live a regular life like everybody else. It’s just nice that I don’t always have to talk about football with those guys.”

Harris was able to see Clemson in person back on June 5. He was officially extended a scholarship offer during his unofficial visit, which he took with Roswell (Ga.) four-star cornerback Ethan Nation.

“I loved the way Clemson is set up,” Harris said. “It’s a very discreet location. There’s not too much going on all-around it. I’m a homebody, I don’t really like doing too much. That’s kind of right up my alley and it’s just making sure that you get your education and playing football at a high level. That’s just something that’s big for me. I’m not really a big city type of guy. I definitely like the setup of the whole campus.”

Harris enjoyed that he was able to take in the visit with Nation as the two had a fun time together, interacting with the coaches and things of that nature.

This is all new to Harris. It was different for him because the standout Alabama cornerback wasn’t being recruited before the pandemic. He was finally able to put voices to faces on the recruiting trail this summer.

“This was all so new to me and my parents,” he said. “But, it was a blessing from the man up above because there were so many kids that wanted to get out to college and see what college has to offer. I’m thankful that I don’t have to make my decision blind. It was definitely amazing.”

At the end of the day, Harris is a self-described competitor, who loves football.

“I’m a technician,” Harris added. “Someone who truly focuses on the technical aspect, especially with me being a taller DB. I have to be honed in on all the little things, making sure that I don’t take any extra steps in-and-out of my transitions. I’m definitely aggressive…I’ll compete with anybody, no matter the size, no matter anything.

“Whoever gets me will be getting someone that wants to be the best and wants to go win a National Championship and help his team do so.”

First and foremost, Harris is a team-first player. When asked about his goals for this upcoming season and beyond, Harris didn’t hesitate with his answer.

“Win a state championship, that’s the only thing I want to do,” he said.

Harris believes that individual success comes with team success and everything else will fall into place from there.
